To the Editor: The old issue of amalgamation of Brazeau Coun-ty and Town of Drayton Valley has reared its ugly head again—this time by the Town Council of Dray-ton Valley (cf. letter to the Minister of Municipal Af-fairs printed in the County agenda of June 16/2020, pp. 64 – 66). This letter outlines the arguments by Drayton Val-ley to justify such an amalgamation. Since such a move would affect us all, it behooves all of us to take an interest/action on the matter. It is obvious to this writer that the only reason this move is proposed is to gain access to OUR money (re: tax revenues), not to improve the overall ad-ministration of County/Town affairs. It should be kept in mind that Brazeau County al-ready contributes $2,083,243 every year (with no oversight) to the Town budget (source: Brazeau County). In addition, the County donated $800,000 a few years ago to the Eleanor Pickup Arts Centre, as well as other projects in town; we do more than our fair share already. Not too many years ago, Brazeau County gave 50 quarters of land (next to the town) to the Town, in-cluding the business/tax that went with it. This was supposed to cover any monetary requests for the next 50 years!! Every county resident who spends a nickel in the town supports the town. How much Drayton Valley money is spent in the County? Whose roads are used by Drayton Valley workers to get to work and how much does the Town contribute to the upkeep of these roads? It might be advisable to ask your councillor where he or she stands on the issue, keeping in mind that we elect them to protect county interests. The real solution is for the Province to conduct a

LETTERS TOTHE EDITOR

“viability study” and deal with Town problems and provide necessary support—not the County. The Town has to solve it’s own problems without de-pending on a constant infusion of funds from the County. Lynn Oberle, Breton

To The Editor:Re: Rental Properties

As another year goes by our rental units get older. They need more maintenance, upgrades and renovations. From electrical, plumbing, insulation, etc... With many landlords collecting rent and putting back the bare min-imum, they lapse into a unit that is a step or two from being condemned. There are some landlords that do maintain their units up to par but they are getting fewer in numbers. These well maintained units are usually priced so high the majority cannot afford them.

Possible AlternativesWe need newer rental units that are 100% maintained and are in good condition. It would be proper if there was a rent control set so everyone could afford all properties, from new to older. All units should have to pass an inspection before they qualify to be a rental unit. This would ensure that the rental market would have equality/quality standards. Also, there should be a standard so that tenants are not treated like they are less of a person with no rights. Everone should be treated with respect. This way the renter would recipro-cate back to the landlord the same way.

In the current market, most units are delapitated and need a lot of work. Some are close to being condemned, or should be. Landlords are harrassing their tenants if something needs to be done (blaming them) and are only nice when they come to collect their money. Some landlords do take pride in their rental units, but these are few and far between. Wear and tear from years of ignoring the issues, some are using this as an excuse to evict the tenant instead of keeping up with main-tenance. (Just get a new renter who doesn’t complain right away).

Let’s face it, being a renter can be hard. You do not know if you are living on borrowed time in your unit. How long before you have to make another move, and to where, and to what?

Some alternatives from a concerned, LONG TERM renter,Eric Lindstrom, Warburg, AB

THE BRETON BOOSTER [email protected] 780-887-0077 JUNE 17 2020 EDITION #1434

  Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We are in unprecedented times and understand that everyone has been impacted by the events and fall out of Covid. I want to thank everyone in the community for their resilience, compassion, and respect for one another through the last several months.

As businesses across the province continue to re-open, the ATB branch in Breton is evolving from an appointment only to a controlled opening model. We do want to ensure our customers have the opportunity to bank how they want to bank. While the doors remain locked, we will continue to accept appointments for teller services as well as walk-ins for your everyday banking needs.

As the opening in the province has come very quickly, we do not know what that will lead to in terms of the covid containment. As such, we are committed to the safety of our team members and customers. In our controlled opening, you will be asked screening questions at the door to ensure you are healthy and you will be asked to sanitize your hands.

ATB is committed to continuing to serve the community of Breton. All of our team members are working hard to ensure your banking needs are met in person or over the phone. Thank you to all of our customers who have been patient and understanding during these times and we look forward to continuing to serve your banking needs.

If you have any questions over your personal financial situation or wish to book a time to come in and see us, please call us at 780-696-3665. For after hours support, please contact our Client Care Centre at 1-800-332-8383.

Thank you Sincerely, Matt Straker ATB Financial Community Manager Breton, Thorsby, and surrounding area

The Brooklyn Bridge is truly a miracle bridge. In 1863, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea for this spec-tacular span. Bridge-building experts through-out the world told him it was a crazy idea and that he should forget it. It couldn’t be done. But Roebling wouldn’t forget it. It was his dream. So he convinced his son, Washington, who was a young up-and-coming engineer, that the bridge could be built. So the two of them de-veloped a plan of attack. With unharnessed ex-citement and inspiration, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project was only a few months under con-struction when a tragic accident took the life of John Roebling and severely injured his son, Washington. He was left with permanent brain damage and was unable to talk or walk. Every-one felt that the project would be scrapped, but even though Washington couldn’t speak or walk, his mind was as sharp as ever. And he still had a burning desire to complete the bridge. An idea hit him in his hospital bed and he developed a code for communication. All he could move was one finger, so he touched the arm of his wife with that finger, tapping out a code to communicate to her what to tell the en-gineers who were building the bridge. For 13 years, Washington tapped out his instruction with his finger until the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge was finally completed.

May we have that same perseverance in our walk with the Lord. “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; persever-ance, character; and character, hope. And hope does disappoint, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us!” Rom-ans 5:3-5.
