O n Thursday, Oct. 18, three members of the Women of WWII of Oak Harbor, flew as guests of the Honor Flight Network to see the

National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C.Eva Marie Brown, Patricia Ricketts, Dorothy Mae

Nelsen and their escorts flew to Baltimore for two nights. Senator Bob Dole greeted the ladies when they visited the WWII Memorial. Senator Dole, one of the organizers in the efforts to build the memorial, tries to be on hand to greet everyone who attends the weekly Honor Flight program. Before touring Arlington Cemetery, they visited the Women’s Memorial that was celebrating its 15th Anniversary. This memorial is dedicated to women in military service for America. They saw the Lincoln Memorial, the Reflection Pool and the Changing of The Guard, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They received sweatshirts with the Honor Flight logo.

Eva said after they sent their applications last September, they prepared themselves physically and emotionally for their adventure. Eva, a Navy veteran, just celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Pat, an Army veteran, is ninety-three and Dorothy, a Navy veteran, is 91.

They are often referred to as “The Greatest Generation”, the men and women who served and worked during WWII. There are several groups and organizations for men from WWII but not for the women who served. After the war, many women went quietly on to live their lives as wives and mothers. Most people are unaware of their military service until it appears in an obituary. Two of the founding members decided they wanted to meet other women

who had served in WWII before they read of it in an obituary. Women of WWII had their first meeting April 25, 2007 at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, with 13 women having served in different branches. It is a privilege to hear their stories, young women who

had courage, a sense of adventure and a desire to serve their country. They continue to meet

the last Tuesday of every odd month at the Jumbo Buffet. For more

COMMUNICATION DURING THE HOLIDAYS WITH HEARING LOSSJoin Joel Bergsbaken, the Program Coordinator for the North Sound Office of the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center, for a workshop on Communication and Hearing Loss. When working with and counseling individuals with hearing loss, the most challenging situations, after telephone use, is large gatherings, especially large dinners. The holidays are coming up and that means large gatherings of the people you care most about. For many, this creates fear of isolation and frustration. The workshop will discuss new ways to look at hearing loss, and approaches that can help people still connect at holiday gatherings. The North Sound Office of the Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center, a non-profit organization, has served individuals with hearing loss in Washington State for over 75 years. Honor Flight NetworkHonor Flight Network recognizes American

veterans for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them to Washington, D.C. to see THEIR memorial at no cost. Top priority (for which applications are currently accepted) is given to World War II and terminally ill veterans, from all wars. In the future, Honor Flight Network will be expanded to include Korean War and Vietnam War veterans. In order for Honor Flight Network to achieve this goal, guardians fly with the veterans on every flight providing assistance and helping veterans have a safe, memorable and rewarding experience. If you know of someone who is a World War II veteran or a veteran with a terminal illness, please fill out an application and send it in. Every World War II veteran flies free. Escorts on the Travel Committee, know that it is not going to be a ho-hum, same ol’ same ol’, run of the mill trip when I escort. I do organize and take care of details when I plan a trip. But…there’s always a little adventure. Totally un-planned.

We had 18 wonderful people on our New England Cruise adventure and had a great time. Except for the airports. It started with a Red Eye out of Sea-Tac. Never again. I promise you. After

walking to Hell and back, we made it to our gate. Surely we’ll at least snooze. Wrong. We arrive at JFK and its another death march to baggage claim. At least this time we had two wheelchairs instead of just one. Then I saw the people mover trams. What??!?!?!?! We could have all rode instead of stumbling around half asleep? We board our tour bus and nearly two hours later (the drivers in NYC are maniacs) we make it to the diner for breakfast. Most of us were calling it brunch. Met up with our tour guide who kept promising a great tour. Well…it’s not everybody that gets side swiped by a rental truck in NYC and lives to tell about it. No one was hurt. The truck did take off the bus drivers side view mirror. Forty-five minutes later we board the replacement bus. Just part of the adventure we promise when you travel with the OHSC. We were stopped in front of a cheesy little souvenir shop so people got off and got some souvenirs, roasted

peanuts and coffee from MacDonald’s. We just wanted to get to the ship but the tour guide still wanted us to have a great tour of NYC. We did. Got to the ship and the next seven days were beautiful New England Fall days.

I was prepared this time for JFK for the return flight. I knew what to do. I step up to the Delta counter and tell the young man I need three wheelchairs and two people movers. He swallows, looks me up and down and repeats back, “Three wheelchairs and two people movers?” I know I’m out of shape, did he really think it was all for me? So I point to the people behind me and say, “It’s for my group.” He tells me to wait a few feet away and someone would be there to assist us. Another gentleman comes and asks if I was the one needing three wheelchairs and two people movers while eyeballing Mr. Volunteer. I replied “Yes, for my Group.” He looks at my boarding pass and asks which gate. I didn’t know so I

go ask the first man. He looks up when I ask for my gate number. He swallows and says Gate 2. I said thank-you but he knew I didn’t have any idea where Gate 2 was. He points at an entry five feet away and says, “You go through security and Gate 2 is right there.” I could see it. About that time one of group calls out, “Roxann, the gate is right there. We can walk it!” I hurry over to tell the second man we wouldn’t need three wheelchairs and two people movers. “Are you sure mam’?” Yes I’m sure. Mr. Volunteer is pretending he doesn’t know me.

We made the five feet to Gate 2, caught our plane and got out of NYC one day before Hurricane Sandy hit. Yes, we promise excitement and adventure. Who wants to join me for Hawaii, Alaska or Panama Canal? It will be an Adventure– I promise!

the children they serve. Children range is age from 3 to 5 years. Let’s help our little ones keep warm.

Needing assistance with prescription expenses? Medical Safety Net of North Whidbey is a charitable organization providing immediate temporary help with uncovered prescription expenses to people living in zip codes 98277 and 98278. This small fund is supported by the donations of your friends,

neighbors and local businesses, and administered by volunteers. In order to meet the needs of as many people as possible, we set limits on how much assistance is available to any one individual over the course of a year. Payments are made directly to providers. Volunteer Drivers NeededVolunteer Services, a Program of

Senior Services Of Island County of Island County has a need for volunteer drivers to transport seniors and disabled to medical appointments. Volunteers use their own cars, but are reimbursed for fuel, and can state their preferences for remaining on Island, or traveling off Island and times they are available. This is a wonderful way to help those that can no longer drive, but desire to remain independent in their homes. There is a background, driving record and fingerprints check required. Trina Barkhausen, RN. Trina joined the Regency on Whidbey staff on October 22nd, 2012 as the Director of Nursing Services. Trina is returning to Regency on Whidbey after earning her RN degree and spending the last three years working in the Medical Surgical and Obstetrics units at Whidbey General Hospital. Some of you may remember Trina when she worked with Regency as a caregiver, and then as an LPN. She is very excited to be returning to Regency and to have the opportunity to work with seniors, which is where her heart is. Before starting a career in health care, Trina served in the US Navy where she gained skills in management and leadership. When she is not engaged in her career as a Registered Nurse, Trina enjoys spending time with her husband of 12 years at their home in Oak Harbor where they have several animals and a large garden. Trina has two grown sons and a grandson that she sees quite frequently. Her other interests include traveling, scuba diving and various other outdoor sports.
