This summer has taught me a lot. Rules are there for a reason. The Summer between high school and college is saidto be "the best of your life" by so many generations, and nowI know why. No responsibilities, no cares and absolutely noworries are 3 of the factors why you can let your hair downand really have a great time.

I sped off to Cornwall with a few of my closest friends, andon paper, did everything I shouldn't. Now I am home and canlook back, I am beginning to question how things didn't go wrong and frankly, how we are allback in once piece!!

Some people say rules shouldn't be broken, but my theory is break a few to see what happens if you do! Chances are the world wont be ending, but you can leave with a re-freshed mind and stories to tell, such as the time you went skinny dipping at 4am during hightide. Not that I did that, of course. (My mother reads this magazine.)

I was in Birmingham the other day - and for the purposes of this sentence, you need to remember that this is written at the beginning ofthe previous month so we are talking early November – and I wasmoaning to my friend, in that irritating way those of us who are gettingon a bit tend to do, about all the premature signs of commercial Christmas. There were the stacked Christmas trees in Victoria Square, the lights strung across New Street, and of course numerous Yuletide indications in the shops everywhere. I know my childhood wasn’t as setabout with November Christmasness, so I did a bit of Googling to seewhat a few hundred years ago would have been like in Bewdley at thistime.

Well, there certainly wouldn’t have been any signs of festivity in November! Christmas wasjust one of the numerous religious festivals throughout the year. People did decorate theirhouses at Christmas with holly, ivy and mistletoe, and burned a Yule log, but most of thethings that make up a 'traditional' English Christmas were actually invented (or importedinto England from other countries) in the 19th century. That includes Christmas trees, Christmas cards, Christmas crackers, paper decorations and, of course, Father Christmas. The holiday itself was, however, a long one in Tudor England, lasting right through to TwelfthNight so a lack of fancily-wrapped gifts didn’t hold them back. I thought it sounded quitegood, actually, though I may be on my own here.

Anyway, whatever you’re doing over the festive season, (and I’m having a new photo by Garyfor my Christmas present) may all of us at the Bridge team wish you a happy Christmas andpeaceful New Year.

Margaret

And did those feet…?Do you have a pair of shoes that have a

story attached to them?

If so then I would like to hear from you.

I am working with a team of people to create an exhibition of shoes and stories from peopleconnected with Bewdley and the surrounding area.

They might be regular shoes or they might be trainers, sandals, boots, brogues, ballet shoesor some other footwear;

they might belong to you or someone else;

but the important thing is that they are connected to a story or an experience, which is important to you (or whoever was wearing the shoes).

We will take great care of the shoes and will of course return them.

The exhibition will be in Bewdley in 2013 – dates yet to be finalised.

The shoes that are used will be selected to show the different circumstances and life of theowners and will include a variety of people. You can phone me on 01299 402275 or emailme: [email protected]

Community NewsDear Editor,

I read with interest the article in the November issue the article entitled 'The Bewdley Youth Festival 2012'.

I was somewhat disappointed that no mention was made of the input of the YouthCafé. The art work (including the 3D work)was all displayed in the Café; it is still on display there.

We also had one of our local Olympic Swimmers, three local people who were volunteers at the Olympics and paralympicsattend at the Café. This event was a hugesuccess; the Café was filled to capacity andyet absolutely no mention of any of this ismade in the Report - this leaves me very sad.

As from the end of the year with the demiseof the Youth Service we shall be the soleprovider of Youth Services for the area. Myfellow Trustees and I had rather hoped thelocal community might wish to help.

Christmas in the time of Jane Austen

We often refer to having a 'traditional Christmas', but in reality Christmas has changed muchover the years. In Jane Austen's time (1775-1817), the idea of the Christmas tree was yet tobecome common place in Britain, not being introduced until the 1820s. Instead, the house wasdecorated with familiar greenery such as holly, ivy and mistletoe, but not before ChristmasEve. Laurel and bay were also used to symbolise eternity and whole red apples were strung

around bunches ofmistletoes to create a'Kissing Bough'.

The Christmas mealwould have consistedof meat pies, roastbeef or goose (notturkey), minced pies(both with and without meat), plumporridge, bread, cheese, ale, posset andelderberry wine.

At The Copper Pot,based in The Shamblesat Bewdley Museum, there is the chance to

see some these decora-tions, try tasters of historic food, buy gifts made from historic recipes, such as traditional mincemeat, gingerbreads and hot chocolate, or take part ina morning course on historic Christmas food on 8th December (booking essential) whereyou can learn about, taste and take away past Christmas recipes.

The studio is open every Friday to Sunday in the run-up to Christmas from 12noon - 4pm, sodrop by and have a look! If you bring along an original copy of this article we'll also give you5% off any purchases (except courses) in December.

More information can be found on our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/TheCop-perPot or on our website www.thecopperpot.co.uk.

Merry Xmas (yes, they really did use that phrase!)

News from Guide Dog WalkingI imagine many of you will have seen Lucky and me out and about. The seven week old 3kgbundle I carried around earlier in the summer is now over 12 kg and 6 months old. GoldenRetriever Lucky, named because of a difficult birth, has now developed her confidence, puton weight and taken well to her training. She has learned to walk on her lead and respondto ‘come, sit, down, wait, stay and leave’. She enjoys both human and canine company and hasalready been to two sleepovers and had a 'friend' to stay! Currently, I am working on herconfidence when vehicles are approaching from behind, and, of course, in the dark withthose strange street lights shadows!

She thoroughly enjoyed the town's Harvest Celebration - particularly the dancing. Bewdleyis such a good town in which to train a young pup because there is always something goingon, so thanks to all those who organise the markets, special days and weekends. Lucky and Ihave met so many great people (and, of course, dogs!) who always seem to enjoy their visitsto the town.

Pippin is progressing well in Worcester on her advanced training. She started in July and should be matched with a potential ownerby the end of December. Arty continues to perform his workingduties well on the Isle of Wight.

Lucky and I thank you for your support of her training and yourgenerosity in this summer’s collection. All good health and happiness over the festive season!

Tails of a Veterinary Practicelife at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

Hi everyone! I can hardly believe that it’s almost Christmas again andone of my favourite times of the year. All of my humans are gettinginto the Christmas mood and the surgery is looking very festive withthe tree all lit up and lots of lovely cards from our clients hung allaround the waiting room. Every year I get very excited as I get to havesome new toys to play with and sometimes one of my humans takesme home with them for the Christmas break.

Although Christmas is full of lovely treats for humans, many of them are potentially dangerous for their pets. Turkey bones and stuffing, raisins and sultanas used in cakes andpuddings are all bad for cats and dogs. Chocolate is particularly dangerous for dogs andcan make them seriously ill. Even pretty decorations have their own hazards with pinetree needles getting stuck in paws and throats and tinsel, holly, mistletoe and poinsettiasall being toxic. No human wants a sick pet and a big vet’s bill over Christmas, so pleasekeep an eye on your pets and have a happy and safe Christmas.

This month we start a new series written by Alastair Elliot, conductor of Bewdley Choral Society.

Behind the Baton

The editor has kindly agreed to allow me to indulge my passion and write a regularmusic column. As a conductor, singer and (very) part-time organist, my musicaltastes are rooted in Church Music, however, I love any sort of live music and in Bewdley, we are certainly treated to a wide range of it in and around the town.

Many of you are aware that we have some very talented professional musicians inour midst as well as some terrific amateur groups. This month, Bewdley Choral Society, along with local professional instrumentalists and soprano soloists will beperforming a programme of works by the greatItalian Composer: Antonio Vivaldi. The concertwill naturally feature the famous “Gloria” butwill also include some lesser known works andthe triumphant Double Trumpet Concerto.

Vivaldi was an interesting character, ordained asa Priest in Venice, he very rarely took mass dueto ill health and appeared to spend most of histime performing and composing. If you are newto Classical Music and want to enjoy more, thenVivaldi is an excellent place to start. His musiccan be both vibrant and lively but also passionate and emotive – the opening two choruses of the Gloria personify this extremelywell. His music is also very descriptive (The Four Seasons are a good example) andlike the music of Mozart, it is very easy on the ear, full of catchy tunes and playfulmelodies.

So, if you want to take yourself back to the baroque splendour of Venice, come to St Anne’s Church on Saturday 8th December and enjoy what promises to be a superconcert.

Finally, being December, thoughts turn to Christmas music. For starters there’ll beplenty on show at the Christmas Lights Switch on and I hope that everyone at somepoint gets to sing a carol or two. For me, this time of year would not be the samewithout a bit of “Hark the Herald” or “Deck the Halls”.

Happy Christmas.

Alastair

Parking Rage! The other day I succumbed to a most satisfying bout of Parking Machine Rage. I'd drivendown town with a friend and we’d parked in Dog Lane car park. I went to the machine andentered the car’s registration into the machine - a stupid, time-wasting exercise in itself - andput £2.30 in for 3 hours. It took the money but wouldn't give me the ticket. I tried again -still no result, and the machine held on to the money. I noticed there was a number to ringIn Case Of Difficulty so I took out my shiny new mobile and rang it. A bored voice told meto go and buy a ticket at the other machine and write in for a refund. Now I want you toknow that I am a sixty-something woman who is kind to kittens and babies and isn’t knownfor the violence of her temper.

"You're kidding!” I roared. She repeated her mantra. "That's ridiculous", I said more gently."Write in for a £2.30 refund?" She made the sort of noise teenagers make when they shrugtheir shoulders and look at you pityingly before saying "Whatever". "Thank you for yourhelp", I said icily to the jobsworth on the other end of the line and rang off.

Then I yelled at the machine and kicked it. It hurt, so I hit it hard. It made a burping noiseand a 10p fell down into the little receptacle. If it was prepared to make that sort of apology, however small, I was going to encourage it to go further. I belted it harder. A 20p tinkled out.By now a small crowd had gathered. I renewed my efforts and by smacking it really hardround the side of its head I got it to disgorge another 10p piece. Having bruised both handsand my foot, got a sore throat and a shortage of epithets, I decided 40p was the best I couldexpect, and walked over to the other machine.

You should try it some time. It's really satisfying.

(Just so you know – the Bridge magazine doesn’t actually endorse violence to machines!)

A cold day last month saw acrowd of Bewdley people converging on St Anne'sChurch for the annual Fairtrade Christmas sale.It was very well supportedand over £3,300 poundsmade on the fairly-tradedproducts.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5th November 2012

CCTV for Bewdley

Councillors had previously met with members of the Local Policing Team to discuss the useof mobile CCTV to capture images of anti-social behaviour and other criminal activities beingcommitted in the town. Those images could help to track down and prosecute offenders. There were though an increasing number of systems available which were relatively afford-able which provided high quality images. Councillors agreed to pursue the matter further tosee what could best be used in Bewdley.

New Town Council Notice Board

The Town Council’s new notice board is now in place outside the entrance to the library. Thanks to the library staff for agreeing to have it put up there. This will replace the noticeboard which was no longer water proof and which was fixed to the wall of the disabled toiletacross the road. The board on the Mayor’s Parlour in Load Street remains in place as doesthe larger board inside the Guildhall forecourt.

Public Open Space – Northwood Lane

Councillors noted that the District Council was commencing the procedure whereby theownership of pieces of land could be exchanged and planning consent obtained to create anarboretum and improved amenity area next to the river. The land had been cleared last yearand a Friends Group had been established during the summer. The Town Council was gener-ally supportive of the new scheme but noted there was a period of time for objections to belodged by the public before it could go ahead.

Load Street Public Realm Improvements

Councillors receive more details from the County Council as to their proposals to carry outa renewal of the pavements along Load Street from the Church all the way down to theRiver. The present concrete slabs would be replaced by small stone block paviours of a suit-able colour to fit in with the street scene. There would be no black tarmac. A new streetlighting scheme would also be put in place along Load Street at the same time. The worksshould go ahead next year.

1st Bewdley Scout Group has been given a fresh start after the signing of a new lease fortheir Scout Hut. The Scout Hut was badly damaged following a vandalism attack in the Spring. The new lease granted by Wyre Forest District Council gives the growing Scout Group secu-rity of tenure for the next 25 years. The Bewdley Scout Hut is home to over 80 boys and girls aged between 6 and 14 in the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

The new lease was conveyed by one of the Scout Group’s sponsors, DWT Legal Solicitors in Kidderminster. Tony Gibb, Director of DWT Legal said “We were really pleased to support such a worthwhile cause helping the Scouts develop our young people for the future.I hope to have retired by the time the next renewal comes around!”

Robert Smith, Chairman of the 1st Bewdley Scout Group said “Support from sponsors likeDWT Legal works wonders in helping us to improve the facilities at the Scout Hut.
