The workplace is going through a time of unprecedented change driven by a set of social and technology trends that are challenging the assumptions that have guided workplace design for the past 50 years.

Rapidly Evolving Workforce Demographics

Millennials are bursting into the workforce and they're bringing with them a new set of expectations around choice and flexibility. Leading edge companies know that a modern, open workplace environment is key in attracting and retaining top talent.

Changing Nature of Work

The type of work being performed in the workplace is fundamentally changing. Most of the process oriented work, the work that the cubicle based work environment was designed to support, has either been automated or outsourced. The work that remains is unstructured, requiring a high degree of collaboration typically not served well today by a traditional work environment.

The business opportunity for building the next generation workplace Cisco's Alan McGinty, Senior Director of Workplace Innovation, discusses the unique opportunity Corporate Real Estate, IT, and Human Resources leaders have to transform their work environments.

The Rise of the Agile Enterprise

In today's hyper-connected business climate, decisions need to be made quickly and need to leverage the insights of individuals across the entire business. Having a workplace environment that allows employees to come together at a moment's notice, regardless of location, is vitally important in creating a culture of innovation and responsiveness.

Technology Advances

Lastly the explosion of mobile devices, cloud applications, and the widespread availability of ubiquitous internet access is changing the definitions of the work. Work is what you do, not where you go. Technology has untethered employees from the workplace and even when they come to the office, they're not sitting at their desk for eight hours a day. Companies are starting to realize their real estate portfolios are dramatically under-utilized.

Workplace Transformation In response to these trends and challenges, an increasing number of companies are looking to transform their workplace environments, consolidating their real estate portfolios where possible, and investing a portion of those savings in the transformation of the workplace.

Companies are moving away from the traditional cubicle centric office layout and moving toward working environments that offer employees a variety of workspace choices that are aligned with the work activities being performed.

The next generation workplace will consist of areas for employees to concentrate, collaborate, learn, and socialize. There will be a mix of formal workplaces and informal places encouraging collaboration and sharing across the entire work environment.

Striking a Balance The solution is not only about space design. To build the next generation workplace, companies will need to balance the design of the physical workplace, workplace policies, and technology. Technology will be at the core of the next generation workplace. With increasing mobility both within and outside the physical workplace, a robust, secure, and intelligent network will become the foundation of the next generation workplace, ensuring that employees stay connected.

As the workplace becomes more dispersed, video collaboration will blur the lines between the physical and virtual work environments. Video will dramatically improve the meeting experience, reduce the time it takes to make decisions, and drive new levels of employee engagement.

Collaboration solutions like Cisco Spark will allow users to meet, share, and get work done together, driving new levels of productivity and innovation.

Lastly, the Internet of Things, IoT, will enable a new set of workplace services allowing us to deliver a level of personalization in the workplace never imagined before.

The Time is Now The time is now for corporate real estate, human resources, and IT leaders to come together and create the next generation workplace. This journey will not be easy but those who are successful will propel their companies into a new era of efficiency, innovation, and profitability.
