tTh e best bet for a head turner for me would be a crinkly smile, slightly dicey, with enough eye contact to catch a playful glint and no more. Th e second, a gesture of concern hidden in a single fold of arrogant irreverence, and well, a close third, if I may admit will be the motion of a graceful butt in a pair of jeans! Excuse the irreverence, but a pair of jeans is causal enough to cause the expression in a friendly way.

Th e fi rst touch of spring just doesn’t unfold the budding leaves on the trees, but folds the long sweaters and trench coats that never let you fl aunt the style which can turn enough heads to generate a collective torque power to propel a torpedo to its target

Art since ancient times is witness to the aesthetics and att raction of the posterior shape, expressed in paintings, sculptures, dance forms, athletics, and mythical deities, the ancient Greeks even worshipped at the shrine of Aphrodite Kallipygos, Goddess of the Beautiful bott om!

Th e hoary past has its stories of having att empted to fl aunt the shape or suppress it in various dress forms right from the days of the twined fi g leaf! Th e width of the hoops on skirts was an att empt at increasing the girth at least, and so was the squeezed corset that gave the appearance of the shape blooming both sides of the waist. Back home the haku patasi short sari wrap did well with its layers of tight wraps.

Th e trouser went on to give closer defi nition, but it was not until denims with the slightest hint of lycra and spandex , the elastic material, that made the ordinary do the exclusive. Th e butt had arrived in a pair of jeans. Snug. Firm

But the art of the look lay not just there, the cuts held the secret more than the fi ts

You climb into many pairs of jeans, with an eager twist towards the mirror, trying to catch the fi rst look at your butt , and wonder where did it disappear ! Let’s piece it cut by cut

Size is not uniform among brands, it always varies. Don’t be bothered, this is a strategy of individual brands to win exclusive loyalty for a client whose fi t matches with them. More over uniformity of size will cut out competition and the fun too of going on a searching spree!

The cUTTh is is the fundamental decision. Th e preference goes to the Boot Cut which skims the thigh and slightly fl ares at the bott om. Th e fl ared leg is narrow at the knee and is the most common cut for the low rise. Th is also includes the now retro bell bott om, extra fl ared.

The RiseTh e rise of a jean is where the fl y is, the length from crotch to waist. Low rise jeans do not mean a fi t type but a cut type and are certainly right for the butt look, and of course the fl at belly, if you have worked on one. Th ey make your hips look wider and also do not push the extra inches around your waist outwards. Around 7 inches is about right, but for extra eff ect manufacturers go as far, or rather as low as 3 inches! Th ese are the Brazilian cuts, inspired by the awesome butt fi ts of samba dancers! Besides the Boot Cut low rise is also found on Cigarett e , Skinny and Pencil jeans.

The yokeThe yoke of the jean is the part below the waist and above the back pockets, this area should form a wider soft V shape to accommodate the arc of the butt, and give the lifted & firm look. Or it can be the Inverted Arc which too gives the illusion of a fuller rear. And then there is the Heart yoke, this too can enhance the bottom as the cut clearly outlines a curvy heart shape. Compared to these the Straight yoke line and the Extra wide yoke do the opposite to your butt look.

Yoke lines dictate the placement of the back pockets. Anyhow it is best to avoid low pockets and go for pockets slightly wide apart with sequins, this gives the impression of a wider butt

And don’t forget the waist belt which is a double layer of the cloth and should be cut higher at the back and slightly lower in the front

Below & above the low rise jeans q A low rise jean should not have a high rise panty, it can look sloppyq A good wide belt will help to keep the cleavage of your bottom from

showing when you bend over.q Avoid wearing a tight shirt that can cause the flab around your waist

to bulge, since the waist area is already exposedq For shorter women its preferable to go for a mid rise jean, the ones

just below the waist level, and a narrower belt.q Take care of the belly; tone it before you show it.

The combinaTionsTo look wider choose a lighter color or at least the butt areas should be more faded. Light Jeans matched with a darker top, will give your lower body a fuller appearance.

Pair a belted pullover with the jeans, this creates more shape and adds some padding to the curve.

Pea-coats are a good match for the butt look, the A-line hits the thigh mid way and adds to the shape without covering it fully.

Try High heels, at least 3 inches, this pushes the butt outwards and gives it a projection, and in addition gives more shape to the leg.

Avoid elastic waists, the denim folds below the elastic and adds a few inches which spoils the shape.

With these fundamentals below your belt, go ahead, stalk the walk; explosive Denimite! ■
