RECTOR’S LETTER
A New Command- Love One Another
There was a family who lived on a large farm. The two young sons went to their parents and asked if they
could have a dog- a BIG dog. The parents agreed to let them buy one with the usual stipulations: YOU feed
it. YOU clean up after it, and YOU earn the money to buy it. The boys readily agreed to all those things.
They worked hard all summer to earn the money to buy the dog they wanted…a beautiful Great Dane puppy
they named “Bubba.”
Now, for the most part, the boys were true to their word and took excellent care of the dog and shared the
responsibilities of ownership. On the other hand, Bubba (who in just a short time had grown to immense
proportions) decided that HE owned the boys and the rest of the family as well. Bubba was very
even-tempered and was seldom aggressive; but he was BIG and so many times he got his own way. Well, the
parents noticed that something interesting was beginning to happen. Every time the boys started to argue or
get aggressive with each other, Bubba would stand in-between the two of them. If the argument escalated in
any way, Bubba would go to whichever son was being more aggressive and very gently take his hand into his
huge mouth. And he would stand that way until the boys stopped arguing. Often the boys would eventually
just walk away because they knew they couldn’t move Bubba to get at each other. It worked every time.
Eventually, the boys argued less and learned how to talk out their differences. The parents agreed that much
of the change in their sons’ attitudes had to do with Bubba and his interventions. The mother would later tell
a friend, “You know, I really love that dog!”
In a very real sense, Jesus steps between us (his disciples) and the rest of the world with his teaching about
love. Jesus said, “A new command I give you: love one another.” (John 13:34). Now, that can almost seem
like an over simplification. After all, we know how to love each other, don’t we? We all have people we love
and that love us. Some of us may even claim to love our enemies, as tough as that can be sometimes. But
Jesus ups the ante a bit when he adds, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” That’s a whole
different kettle of fish, isn’t it? The real test of love is if we can love as Jesus loved.
The challenge for us is this- are we willing to allow Jesus to step in-between us and whomever we may not
want (or find unable) to love, and let him show us how to love that person. Not to be crude, but maybe Jesus
is a bit like Bubba, the Great Dane. Maybe in our confrontations with each other, Jesus is like a hound from
Heaven who is not going to let up (that is not going to move) until we make peace, or at best, just walk away.
Jesus is not commanding to feel love; he is commanding us to act lovingly to one another. This is how Jesus
loved. Whether it was Zacchaeus, the hated tax collector, or the woman caught in adultery who everyone was
ready to stone to death, or a man or woman with leprosy- shunned by all, Jesus came to them on their level;
they showed him no love, yet he loved them with his actions, not just with words. And as the old saying goes
- “Actions speak louder than words.” The distinguishing mark of discipleship (of being a Christian)
according to Jesus, is our ability to love one another as he loved us.
My brothers and sisters in Christ, how are you doing with that?
Peace and love,
John+
