Elkhorn Fire Hall gets a facelift

The 26 year old fire station got a new coat of paint this weekend as part of ongoing maintenance from the Stayton Fire District. “We want to make sure that it stays in good shape,” said assis-tant fire chief Jay Alley. The station serves the North Fork area up to Shady Cove Campground, with seven North Fork resident volunteers, one rescue vehicle and one water tender. They average 15 service calls a year - most in the summer when the population doubles or even triples due to visitors.

Did you guess who’s car it was?

Last week, readers enjoyed a little lo-cal history about escapades in a 1956 candy apple red MGA in the submis-sion My First Car. Did you guess who wrote it? That’s right, it was Dr. Law-rence Barnes, a ten year canyon resi-dent and practitioner at Santiam Medi-cal Clinic in Mill City. He’s pictured below with the fabulous machine that led to so many adventures....

The river dropped into excellent condition this week, and very few people took advantage of the ideal conditions with scenic trips or fish-ing on the North Santiam. The few people out there on the water were rewarded with both a first class outdoor experience and also with solitude. That’s unusual this time of year, and we are not complaining. Many different birds are flying around, and kingfishers are noteworthy this month. We had an osprey dive close to the boat and catch a small trout. Dippers are dipping a lot. Eagles occasionally make low elevation fly-overs. Turkey buzzards have a big wing span and are soaring over meadows. They will move to the river banks after salmon spawn. Steelhead are laying in tail-outs and along-side ledges in some places in the middle river sections. There are large numbers of fish up-stream from Packsaddle Park, and large num-bers around Fishermen’s Bend and North San-tiam State Park. Many of my trips the last two weeks have been scenic raft trips, and many of the trips scheduled for the next several weeks are drift-boat fishing trips. Now that the river levels have dropped to normal, fishing success is probable. I have new rods, reels, and tackle to break in, and am enthusiastic about the chanc-es of catching both steelhead and salmon. Steelheaders Salem Chapter board meets on July 6 in Salem at Wholesale Sports at 6:30. Upcoming river activities will be discussed. Interested visitors are welcome.
