Charles E. Mintz, Senior Managing Director and Financial AdvisorCharles Mintz is the team’s founder and lead planning and investment strategist. For over 37 years, Charles has been committed to helping his clients achieve their investment goals. Charles began his career in 1981 with Wheat, First Securities and became branch manager of their Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, office in 1983. In 1985, Charles became the president and co-founder of Fox, Graham & Mintz Securities in Wilmington, North Carolina. Charles joined Scott & Stringfellow in 1990 when Fox, Graham & Mintz was acquired by Scott & Stringfellow, Inc. In 1995, Charles was named chief administrative officer and in 1996 he became the CFO of the firm. In 1997, Charles was named executive vice president and director of the Private Client Group, and was elected to the Board of Directors of Scott & Stringfellow Financial, Inc. In 2003, Charles returned to his hometown of Wilmington to focus on managing portfolios for high-net-worth clients.

Charles earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and an MBA from the University of Georgia. Charles is a graduate of the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School of Business. He has held FINRA Series 4, 7, 8, 24, 27, 31, 53 and 63 security registrations as well as NC life, health and long-term care insurance licenses.

Charles is very active in the community serving as chairman of the Coastal District of the Boy Scouts of America, on the board of the Rotary Club of Downtown Wilmington Foundation, and on the Investment Committee of the First Presbyterian Church. He enjoys spending time with his wife, family and friends at the beach or at home.

Timothy C. Gray II, Vice President and Financial Advisor Tim Gray is the team’s relationship and business development manager. He attended Montreat College on a baseball scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Tim began his financial career with Wachovia Bank and Wachovia Securities (now Wells Fargo) in 2005 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, as a regional private banker. Tim was consistently ranked in the top 3% and was the top performing private banker for six straight quarters before joining BB&T Wealth in 2010. While at BB&T Wealth, Tim was a private advisor where he provided a comprehensive, yet simple approach for his clients’ total financial management. In 2012, he was awarded the BB&T prestigious Sterling Performer Award.

Tim joined Charles Mintz to create the Cape Fear Group in 2013. In 2015 and 2016, Tim received an Outstanding Achievement award for Top Advisor in the Southeast Region of BB&T Scott & Stringfellow.

Tim specializes in retirement planning, investment management and income-producing assets for a mostly conservative client base of high-net-worth individuals, and building rapport with clients through frequent communications. He currently holds FINRA Series 7, 63 and 65 registrations as well as North Carolina life, health and long term care insurance licenses.

Tim is married to Courtney Gray and has two boys, Carson and Trey. He enjoys time with his family, offshore fishing and coaching youth sports.

Wren Mintz, CFP®, Financial Advisor Wren focuses on investment strategies, portfolio analysis and team processes for the team. He began his career in 2012 with BB&T Scott & Stringfellow’s office in Raleigh, North Carolina and joined the Cape Fear Group in Wilmington in 2015. He strongly believes in the idea of “understanding what you own” as an essential part of the investment process and stresses this concept to clients. Wren developed analytical tools to provide efficient processes, which allows the team to effectively manage clients’ accounts.

Wren received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Poole College of Management at NC State University. He currently holds his FINRA Series 7, 63 and 65 security registrations as well as North Carolina life, health and long term care insurance licenses. In addition, Wren earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation in 2017.

Wren loves spending time with his wife, family and friends. He enjoys exercising, spending time at the beach and several outdoor activities.

Joseph F. Poczontek, CFP®, Financial Planning OfficerJoe Poczontek is the Financial Planning Officer with the Cape Fear Group of BB&T Scott & Stringfellow.Joe believes the core of the wealth management process is the planning element and serves as the planning strategist for our team. He helps clients achieve financial goals through active listening, plan development, disciplined action, and effective results. He uses a comprehensive, goal-based approach to investing and is experienced in employing diversified strategies to help manage risk and obtain financial objectives.

Joe has more than eight years of industry experience and began his career with BB&T Scott & Stringfellow in 2010. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kent State University in Kent, OH in 2007. While attending college, Joe enlisted in the Army National Guard and was a non-commissioned officer (NCO). He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal in 2004 and 2006, the Humanitarian Service Medal in 2005, and served in Operation Enduring Freedom in 2008-2009.

Joe currently holds a Series 7, 63, 65, his NC Life and Health license, Long-term Care license, and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner.

Joe enjoys being active in outdoor sports and spending his free time with his wife and family.

Richard Sementa, CFP®, Registered Client Service AssociateRichard is the team’s annuity and fixed income specialist. He joined the Cape Fear Group in 2016 as a Registered Client Service Associate.

After spending 17 years in his family’s grocery business, Richard started his career in the financial services industry as an Investment Counselor with BB&T Investment Services in Morgantown, West Virginia. Later, he transitioned to AIG were he assisted 403(b) plan participants at West Virginia University with a wide range of investment planning services. In 2004, Richard pioneered the opening of an investment operation within a newly-formed bank in West Virginia where he assembled financial plans and 401(k)s.

Richard has a B.S. degree in Business Administration and an MBA from Robert Morris University. In 2010, Richard earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. In addition to the CFP®, Richard holds the FINRA Series 7 and 66 securities registrations as well as NC life and health insurance licenses.

Richard and his wife, Amy, have a son who is currently a licensed attorney in Atlanta, GA. Richard and Amy, moved from Northern West Virginia in order to call Leland, North Carolina their new home.

Mary Ann Owen, Registered Client Service AssociateMary Ann Owen manages all administrative and client service aspects of our group. She joined us in the fall of 2017 after spending most of her career with Wheat, First Securities (now Wells Fargo Advisors) in Richmond, Va., where she held managerial and executive positions in Branch Administration, Client Services, Training and Compliance. She and her husband moved to Wilmington in 2005 to open his counseling practice. Most recently, Mary Ann worked for Securities Training Corporation, where she taught exam preparation classes for financial advisors and other securities professionals.

Her extensive knowledge and interpersonal skills round out our cohesive approach to servicing our clients. Mary Ann has a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also is a graduate of the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School of Business and holds the FINRA Series 7 and 66 registrations.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Mary Ann is an avid Steelers fan and enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is an active member of her church and teaches children’s Sunday School. She lives in Wilmington with her husband, Doug, and dog, Spencer.
