The Carlson School is a member of the Forté Foundation,a consortium of top corporations and highly ranked business schools around the world whose joint mission isto inspire more women to business leadership roles.Elizabeth Neils and Adrienne Peirce are two of theCarlson School’s four Forté Fellows.

Neils decided to get a Carlson MBA after she earned a master’s degree in public policy. She came to businessschool with deep concerns for addressing global poverty.Neils realized that ethically operated multinational com-panies can be a strong deterrent to the spread of poverty.“I had a chance to meet Cargill’s vice president of govern-ment affairs, and I saw the positive effects a multinationalcan have when it invests in a country,” she says. “I realizedthat I didn’t need to work at a non-profit or a governmentagency to be a force for change.”

Peirce came to the Carlson School after spending severalyears working as a product development engineer in themedical-device industry. “I liked that work,” she says, “butI wanted the opportunity to pursue leadership across abroader business spectrum.” Peirce spent her MBA intern-ship consulting for the University of Minnesota’s Morriscampus, where she helped the campus develop its globallyrecognized emphasis on the use of alternative energy.

Peirce has also helped the college plan and host a confer-ence on alternative energy. She traveled to China to help build ties with international partners attending theconference.

Both women have found a unique set of opportunitiesthrough the Forté Foundation, gaining access to leadersand training they wouldn’t have otherwise received.“Besides my access to current female leaders,” says Peirce,“Forté has allowed me to connect with top female studentsfrom more than a dozen MBA programs.”

Lolomari was a student in the Carlson School’s HumanResources and Industrial Relations graduate program andWeber is a graduate of the Part-Time MBA program. Both used each other as role models to deepen theirunderstanding of how women can be effective leaders.

“The mentor circle was a trusting environment thatallowed for professional and personal interactions,” saysWeber. “It was a rich culmination of experience andissues.”

A mentor circle is composed of a handful of graduatestudents and a professional facilitator. Four times a year,

the group attends a presentation and panel discussion on a pressing leadership issue. The mentor circle discusses thetopic, its participants bring a spectrum of life experiencesto the conversation.

Besides attending the formal group meetings, mentorcircle participants meet casually throughout the year tosocialize and develop their leadership and peer mentoringskills.

“I don’t know of a forum where women can so explicitlyand actively network with each other and support eachother,” says Lolomari. “You can tell it’s a success. Peoplekeep coming back.”

With two sons, Brayden and Kyle, Carlson Full-Time MBA programgraduate Ann Cadwallader knows the importance of balance. A decadeago, this Stanford University undergraduate started her own business,Sage Approach, a counseling program for college-bound high schoolstudents. She selected the Carlson School as the place to add depth toher entrepreneurial focus. Cadwallader managed to juggle manyresponsibilities as a student. “When I was at school, I was 100 percentstudent. When I was at home, I was 100 percent mom,” she says.Between classes, she studied; after her last class, she would meet withher study groups. She notes that Carlson School faculty were quick toaccommodate her family obligations; many of her instructors were alsoparents and they understood the intricate balance between student andhome life. In the end, the juggling act was worth it, says Cadwallader.“I gave myself quite an advantage. In the business world, my MBA willalways help me.”
