The Collect V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, who by thy wondrous holiness didst adorn a human home, and by thy subjection to Mary and Joseph didst con-secrate the order of earthly families: grant that we, being enlightened by the example of their life with thee in thy Holy Family, and assisted by their prayers, may at last be joined with them in thine eternal fellowship; who livest and reignest with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Introit Deus in loco sancto Psalm 68:5b,6,35,1 God in his holy habitation; it is he that maketh brethren to be of one mind in an house:

He will give the dominion and preeminence unto his people. (Ps.) Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.

(Bow) Glory be to the Father… (Rise) As it was in the beginning… God is in his holy habitation…

V. In the Name of the + Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. R. Amen.

Collect for Purity, Summary of the Law Missal, page 1 Kyrie (Willan) Hymn 710 Gloria (Willan) Hymn 713

The Lesson: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 The Lord honored the father above the children, and he confirmed the right of the mother over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; and whoever glorifies his mother is like one who lays up treasure. Whoever honors his father will be gladdened by his own children, and when he prays he will be heard. Whoever glorifies his father will have long life, and whoever obeys the Lord will refresh his mother. O son, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives; even if he is lacking in understanding, show for-bearance; and do not despise him all the days of his life. For kindness to a father will not be forgotten, and against your sins it will be credited to you – a house raised in justice to you. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Epistle: Colossians 3:12-21 Brethren, put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And over all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and ad-monish one another in all wisdom, and as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Chil-dren, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discour-aged. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: St. Luke 2:41-52 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. + A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

The parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. After three days they found him in the tem-ple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.” And he said to them, “How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man. V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

An Act of Spiritual Communion for those who cannot now receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament

My Jesus, I believe that thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love thee above all things, and I desire to receive thee into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace thee as if thou wert already there and unite myself wholly to thee. Never permit me to be separated from thee. Amen.

The Last Gospel: St. John 1:1-14 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. + The Beginning of the Holy Gospel according to Saint John. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him: and without him was not any thing made that was made: in him was life, and the life was the light of men: and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. [Genuflect] And the Word was made flesh, [Rise] and dwelt among us: and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. R. Thanks be to God.

Communion Anthem: “The Shepherd’s Farewell” (from L’Enfance du Christ, Op. 25) Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)

Thou must leave Thy lowly dwelling, The humble crib, the stable bare. Babe, all mortal babes excelling, Content our earthly lot to share. Loving father, Loving mother, Shelter Thee with tender care!

Blessed Jesus, we implore Thee With humble love and holy fear. In the land that lies before Thee, Forget not us who linger here!

May the shepherd’s lowly calling, Ever to Thy heart be dear!

Blest are ye beyond all measure, Thou happy father, mother mild!

Guard ye well your heav’nly treasure, The Prince of Peace, The Holy Child! God go with you, God protect you, Guide you safely through the wild!
