I recently mentioned to you that my

daughter, Molly, will be graduating from High

School this coming week. It is a wonderful,

exciting and bittersweet time in our house-

hold. Wonderful and exciting from Molly’s

perspective. She’s ready for the next step.

Bittersweet from Renee’s and my perspective.

This 18 year-old beautiful young woman is

ready to leave home and take her gifts into

the world. We couldn’t be more proud, but it

marks the time. A boundary is crossed and

can never return. And as much as we may

want to hold on to this time tightly, we need

to let go – for both Molly’s sake and our own.

To hold on to her would limit the growth for

all involved.

Today we celebrate the Ascension of

the Lord. Another leaving. Another bitter-

sweet time. The disciples had ridden a roller

coaster recently. Jesus had been crucified

and killed – and their hopes and dreams died

with him. But only three days later he rose

from the dead, filling their hearts with joy

and hope. But now this. He’s going away

again. I don’t want that to happen. I’m not

strong enough. What are we to do now? How

am I to deal with this?

I think most of us would react to this

in much the same way that Mary Magdalene

did on that Easter Sunday morning. When

Jesus said her name “Mary” and she realized

that it was him, she clung to him. She held

him and had no intention of letting him go.

But Jesus, in John 20:17, says to her plainly –

“Don’t cling to me, for I have not yet ascended

to the Father. Go to my brothers and tell

them, ‘I ascend to my Father and your Father,

my God and your God.’”

In other words, I read that as saying

that ascension is part of the normal routine

of life. Jesus’ resurrection wasn’t just a

chance to get the band back together. Life

was calling them all to something new but in

order for that to happen, they had to let go of

the old. They couldn’t cling to it.

That sounds pretty normal, doesn’t it?

I think it’s part of our human condition. We

hold on to the old because it’s what we know.

It feels secure. It reminds me of who I am

and where I belong and it brings me comfort

and safety. But God isn’t inviting us on this

journey for comfort and safety. He’s inviting

us on it to trust in Him and to follow in his

footsteps.

Letting go is a part of life – of friendships,

of communities, of abilities, of seasons of

life, of 18 year-old daughters. It reminds us

that we own nothing but that all is in the

hands of God. Don’t cling. Let them ascend.

And amidst the tears that take their place, make

sure to utter a simple prayer of thanksgiving

that we had them in the first place.

Readings for the Week

Monday Acts 19:1-8/Jn 16:29-33

Tuesday Acts 20:17-27/Jn 17:1-11a

Wednesday Zep 3:14-18a/Lk 1:39-56

Thursday Acts 22:30; 23:6-11/Jn 17:20-26

Friday Acts 25:13b-21/Jn 21:15-19

Saturday Acts 28:16-20, 30-31/Jn 21:20-25

Sunday Acts 2:1-11/1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13/Jn 20:19-23

Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “Jesus sent the gift of the Holy Spirit to protect and guide the Church in carrying out his saving mission.” The feast of Pentecost reminds us that the work of the Holy Spirit guides and protects the Church and enables her to carry out her mission. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives us, as disciples, the grace and strength to move forward and live out our call of faith.

Weekly Reflections by Joseph Zenk, Pastoral Leader

Prayer for Graduates

As our school year draws to a close, let us keep in mind all those graduating from our schools and hold them in prayer…

Heavenly Father, surround those who are graduating with your grace.

Bless them with hope so that they move into the future with eager and open hearts.

Help them to put the knowledge, skills, and insights gained through their education to use for the good of all humankind.

Inspire them to believe in the goodness of life even when faced with challenges and difficulties.

As they commence with their lives, may they grow ever more grateful and wise.

All of this we ask in the name of Jesus, your beloved Son. Amen.

Home Missions-Our Own Needs Collection

This collection will take place on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017 Your support of this appeal makes a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters right here in the United States. The four major beneficiaries represented in the collection and their purpose are:

Catholic Communications Campaign develops media programming to promote Gospel values. Half of all proceeds raised stay in our Diocese. As people continue to access more information on mobile devices there is an increased need to provide Faith resources on these platforms as well. It provides grants to Catholic organizations to support televised Masses, and diocesan newspapers.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal assists over 80 Home Mission dioceses in the United States. They cannot provide basic Pastoral services without outside help. Basic services include Mass, the sacraments, and religious education. This Appeal helps to ease the struggle of these Dioceses and assist them to form vibrant faith communities.

Black and Native American Missions – exist to build Christian communities among the Native American, African American and Alaska Native people in the U.S. Every penny collected is given out in Diocesan grants to support pastoral ministry, Catholic schools, religious education programs where these communities exist. In our Diocese, we annually receive a grant from this collection to assist parishes in Neopit & Keshena in their outreach and service to Menominee Indian Tribe.

The Catholic University of America established by the Vatican and U.S. Bishops, located in Washington D.C. is the National University of the Catholic Church. It provides and education guided by Catholic tradition to nearly 7,000 students each year. One third of our U.S. Bishops are alumni, along with 12,400 priests. Every donated dollar supports financial aid for students. Your gift will enable Catholic University to expand its impact in preparing the next generation of leadership for our Church and Nation. Please be generous.

The material in this kiosk invites us to understand, live and share our faith more in this moment of the New Evangelization. It contains information (books, cd’s pamphlets) on the Mass, wisdom of the saints, church teachings, prayer, marriage and parenting from some well-known authors. We ask that if you take some, you check the price list noted on the kiosk, but don’t let that keep you from learning more about your faith!

Living stones…

What are you building? Lasting relationships, a career, a family? Do you build others up? Are you building a better world? What we build says a lot about who we are.

Each of us has only so many hours in a day, and we do not know when our last day on earth will be. We make many choices in the course of our days and weeks, months and years. How will we use our time? What needs our attention? Who needs our presence and care? We may build something that matters, or waste the opportunities we have in favor of passing things. Through our decisions and actions, we build a life, the total sum of all that we are and do. ~Impact: May 2017
