As a l i f e -long edu-c a t o r , I have come to re c og-
nize that the demands pl a c e d up on t e a c h-ers, students and par-ents can become over-w hel m i n g at t i me s . Often the constant rush to finish and the pres-sure to produce can be daunting.
In fact, during the business of t he dai ly grind, we can lose the ability to keep life in balance.
This br ings me to the words of one of my favorite authors, Hen-ry David Thoreau, who w rote, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I ca me to d ie, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice res-ignation, unless it was quite necessary. I want-ed to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a cor-ner, and reduce it to its lowest terms ...”
In this quote, from his book, Walden: Life
in the Woods, Thoreau sa id t hat he went to Walden to live deliber-ately.
Let’s ta ke a deep-e r l o o k i n t o w h a t “Walden” is, and what Thoreau means by “liv-ing deliberately.”
In his work, Thoreau beautifully describes, tree by tree and river by river, the physical de-scription of Walden, but I see it much differently.
Yes, he was describ-ing a place in extraor-dinary detail; however, I choose to believe he was real ly describing his slice of humanity in its simplest forms.
H e s e e m i n g l y scrapes away the con-fines and trappings of the world and exposes
the brutal and some-t imes uncomfor table honesty of what life is really about.
W hat Walden sym-bol i zes to me is fa r deeper than the pine trees and the wooden woods.
It is a place where p e a c e i s t h e d a i l y breakfast special, and lunch is served with a bit of relaxation.
It’s a place you can truly be yourself — not a place t hat is about s t a t u s or t h e d a i l y grind.
Walden is a place of untold and indescrib-able beauty. Its inner voice speaks rapturous words into one’s soul.
It i s a place t hat most will never be still
long enough, silent long enoug h, a nd hu mble enough to ful ly com-prehend.
It is a place that’s very aroma penetrates f rag ra nt ly into ever y pore of your skin.
It is a place where spirituality, humanity and eternity sacredly and subtly intersect.
Walden is the place w h e r e d r e a m s a r e made, and new plans are birthed. It’s a place of restoration, resolve, and inner revelation.
Walden is something different to every hu-man being, but Walden is essential to the pure foundation of living.
A life without your Walden is a life lived in quiet desperation.
Find your ba la nce in life, and go search to the ends of the Earth and beyond to find your own special Walden.
For when you truly find it, you will most as-suredly know it.
As a people, we must guard against the busy-ness of l ife becoming life itself.
W hether your spe-cial Walden is a person, place, or thing, I en-courage you to simply slow down and breathe.
You owe it to your-self and the ones you love to do so.

perintendent of Terrell ISD.

Rick Carmona, who grew up playing baseball and foot-ball in Terrell, was beside himself with joy and surprise on Friday afternoon after receiving a prestigious award.
Carmona, who exudes and epitomizes Terrell America, was presented the Rotary Club of Terrell’s Community Service Award during the Terrell Chamber of Commerce/CVB’s 109th Annual Membership Meeting and Industrial Recognition Luncheon.
While Rotary Club President Bruce Bryant began read-ing details about the winner of the community service award, Carmona began to show recognition that he was the honoree.
As Bryant read about the winner’s life and accomplish-ments, Carmona began to wipe away tears.
By the time Bryant had nearly finished with the de-scription of the winner, there was not any doubt in any-one’s mind that Carmona was going to be presented with the Rotary Club’s award.
“I was very, very surprised,” Carmona said. “It always is a well-kept secret.
“I prefer to be behind the scenes,” he said. “There are so many people worthy because of their contributions to the city.
“You never think it could be you [to be recognized],” Carmona said.
Carmona went away to college but returned because he had been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug.
He was eating at a Tex-Mex restaurant in the Arlington area when some of his friends began raving about the food.
Carmona told them that was nothing compared to his mother, Mama Carmona’s cooking. He returned to Terrell in 1984 and he and his family started a restaurant where Los Hermanos now stands.
Because of the business’ growth, they opened a new restaurant near Tanger Outlets Center, where they are still located today.
Not only is he a restaurateur, star athlete, he is also a former city councilman who lives to serve his commu-nity. After his stint on the council, he was asked to join the Terrell Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors. He gives credit for all he and the board have ac-complished to the one who started it, the late Mike Cronin.
“Mike Cronin was a great mentor,” he said. “Our main mission is to create jobs and maintain jobs for our citizens. I am real proud of our community.
“I am just one part of many parts that make Terrell such a special community to live in,” Carmona said.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Rick Carmona receives the Rotary Club of Terrell’s Community Service Award from Rotary Club President Bruce Bryant; Carmona talks about winning the award; and he kisses his granddaughter Lily Belle Gunnels, 4, while his mother, “Mama Carmona,” looks on.

Terrell residents will have an op-portunity to step back in time March 24-25 as they enjoy several World War II themed activities. The weekend will open at 7 p.m. Friday with a speech by Jonathan Sandys, the great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, at the Terrell High School Auditorium. Sandys’ pre-sentation, “Lead Like Churchill,” in-cludes personal stories and powerful lessons from the legendary life of Brit-ain’s wartime Prime Minister. Dur-ing this free presentation, Sandys will share how courage, faith and integrity are key to developing the skills needed for a path to success.
On Saturday, Sandys will sign copies of his book, “God and Churchill,” from 2 to 4 p.m. at Books and Crannies, 209 W. Moore Ave.
Also on Saturday, the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum will host a grand-reopening and dedica-tion beginning at 10 a.m. The museum houses artifacts from the 1940s, when Terrell was the site of the first and larg-
est of six schools dedicated to training more than 2,000 Royal Air Force and Army Air Force pilots. The museum’s newly remodeled exhibits are the larg-est of its kind in the world.
That evening, people are invited to dress in WWII style apparel and con-tinue the weekend celebration of the 76th Anniversary of the founding of the No. 1 BFTS at the annual Hangar Din-ner and Dance. Music for the event will be provided by the Waxahachie High School Jazz Band, who will entertain the audience with music from the Big Band era. Tickets to the event, held at the Madix Hangar at Terrell Municipal Airport, are $35 each. Proceeds will be used to help the museum continue its education and preservation of the most extensive collection of its kind, docu-menting Terrell’s little known part in aviation history.

‘We are like diamonds...The Terrell Chamber of Commerce/CVB celebrat-
ed its 109th Annual Membership Meeting and In-dustrial Recognition Luncheon Feb. 10 at J.W. Long Elementary School.
Master of Ceremonies Tori Lucas, vice chairman of the Chamber’s Economic Development Division, wel-comed everyone to the event before introducing Da-vid Hinds, who gave the invocation. After a video pre-sentation of the National Anthem, Tori introduced the elected officials present, along with Glenn Caldwell, outgoing chairman of the chamber’s executive board. Glenn thanked the audience for allowing him to serve as the chamber’s chairman before recognizing the 2016 Executive Committee and outgoing directors. He then presented the gavel to 2017 chairman Ken Lane.
Ken told the audience he was excited about lead-ing the chamber, giving accolades to the staff and vol-unteers who are responsible for overseeing the many events and activities and working with members to ensure the continued betterment of the Terrell com-munity. After introducing the 2017 Executive Board and Board of Directors, Ken presented Glenn with a plaque.
Chamber President Carlton Tidwell introduced Chamber staff. He then presented two President’s Awards for volunteer service. The first was awarded to Darren Lemons, who was credited with accumulating the most President’s Club points during the last year.
The second was awarded to Bruce Bryant for his faith-fulness in serving in whatever capacity he is needed, often with very little notice.
Rick Carmona, chairman of the Terrell EDC, intro-duced members of the TEDC board who were pres-ent. He then recognized two industries for their long history in Terrell. Awards were presented to F & G In-dustries, for 30 years of service in Terrell, and Renfro Industries, celebrating 25 years in Terrell.
Carlton then recognized G & S Sales for 30 years of business in Terrell.
Tori Lucas introduced new Chamber member and recent Terrell resident Joy Weaver, a nationally known speaker and author of the book, “Socially Savvy,” Power Tips and Avoidable Faux Pas for Business and Social Etiquette.” Weaver, owner of the business Pro-tocol Enterprises, gave the audience a crash course on the most common etiquette mistakes and how mak-ing simple changes in the way people do things can make a positive impact on how they interact with our co-workers, business contacts, family members and friends.
Tori then introduced Bruce Bryant, president of the Terrell Rotary Club, who awarded the Rotary Club’s Community Service Award to Rick Carmona. Bruce then asked Phillip Smith of Congressman Jeb Hensarling’s office to come forward and present a proclamation to Rick.
Joy Weaver, a professional business and social etiquette expert, gives tips to audience members during the 109th annual banquet.

In your opinion, what benefits can businesses and organizations get out of being members of the Terrell Chamber of Commerce/CVB?
The Terrel l Cham-ber of Commerce/CVB prov ides a n i nv a lu-able amount of support to our local businesses and organizations. The chamber keeps everyone informed about what’s happening in our com-munity. They also pro-vide opportunities to get involved, and host events that benefit our commu-nity and local businesses and organizations.
What does it mean to be the vice chairman of community develop-ment, and what accom-plishments would you like to achieve?
I hope to see Ter-rell become a “destina-tion city” where people come to not only live, but also to enjoy communi-ty events, shop at local businesses and enjoy our local parks and outdoor spaces. It will take a lot of cooperative work from many different entities. We have a long way to go,
but we are moving in the right direction.
As someone who vol-unteers countless hours with the chamber and ot her orga ni zat ions, what drives you to give back to the community?
The students are what drive me to give back to the community. They deserve the opportunity to live abundant lives.
What would you say to someone who is con-sider ing join ing t he chamber?
I wou ld tel l t hem about the excellent work the chamber and its staff does to make Terrell a wonderful city in which to live and do business.
What new chamber activities would you like to see?
I would like to see the chamber partner with the school district to host a huge Christmas event for the children and fam-ilies of this community. I also think there is an opportunity to provide family-friendly activities before and after football games at Memorial Sta-dium that will bring our community together.

The 36th Terrell Heri-tage Jubilee is about two mont hs away, a nd it promises to have some-thing for everyone — rac-ing pigs, food and a mid-way.
For those people who have never been to the jubilee, it attracts tens of thousands of people ev-ery April.
This year’s event is set for April 20-23, a week later because of Eas-
ter, according to Terrell Chamber of Commerce/CVB Tourism Director Donna Riley.
The four-day event kicks off at 5 p.m. on Thursday, family night, and people may take a spin on all the rides they want for $30.
The midway, once again by Talley Amuse-ments, will open at 4 p.m. on Friday. The jubilee opens at 10 a.m. on Sat-
urday with the midway, vendors and other attrac-tions.
Riley said there also will be a health and busi-ness expo, dog show, state-sanctioned BBQ competition, a car and motorcycle show, a 5K and a quilt show.
There also will be live entertainment, an inflat-able obstacle course, and gymnastics demonstra-tions.

When Carmon Parkman and her powerlifting trainer Trey Lowery opened The Guardian Gym in Terrell last November, they received a lot of posi-tive feedback from the public. Newcomers were impressed, not only with the large size of the facil-ity, but also the fact that it was designed with lots of natural light and mirrors that allow clients to view their form and poses during workouts. How-ever, perhaps nothing has helped their marketing plan as much as the fact that the duo are both bodybuilders whose physiques testify to the fact that they compete in powerlifting competitions on the national level.
Another plus for Terrell’s newest gym, located at 16240 State Highway 205, is the diverse range of programs clients can choose from when they join. Parkman markets the gym as “The Ultimate Training Experience” with programs including American Ninja warrior training, corporate fitness opportunities, free weights, workout stations and personal training. Classes include martial arts,
cycling, yoga and aerobics. They also have tanning beds on the second floor.
Another advantage The Guardian Gym has over other similar facilities is that members are given a code that allows them access to the gym 24 hours a day. This allows them to accommodate members with most any schedule. A separate area of the gym, which houses supplements and work-out clothing, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Carmon, who has a background in sports medi-cine and works as a physical therapist, has a mis-sion to help people of all ages be the healthiest they can be by changing their diet and exercise regimes.
Carmon and Trey invite the public to join them for a free fitness fair beginning at 10 a.m. March 18. The event will include free supplements, food and raffles. International Federation of Bodybuild-ing and Fitness pros also will be in attendance. For more information, call 469-865-9269 or visit their Facebook, www.facebook.com/UltimateTRAIN
