ACC Supported Show By Tina Cox

Despite the rain it was a great weekend for

the Chessie’s again this year at the supported

show. We had a wonderful entry of 45

beautiful dogs. I can’t imagine being the

judge and trying to decide from such

wonderful representations of the breed which

one should win. The trophy table was

absolutely breathtaking with all the wonderful

donations from ACC and MCBRC

members; a huge thank you to all who

donated. We held our annual potluck picnic

after breed judging which was very tasty

thanks to all the wonderful cooks. The raffle

went well with tons of great donations. All in

all it was a fantastic day of enjoying our dogs

and the good company of each other.

Working Dog Stake 2010 By Elbert Rush

The barking of dogs, the scrape of heavily

laden sleds along the ground, the swish of

native prairie grass, and the trudge of

footsteps were the sounds of, not a goose or

duck hunt, but the set-up and running of the

Michigan Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club's

3rd

Working Dog stake on September 12th

,

2010. To reach an area with enough water to

accommodate a Working Dog Stake

required a walk of nearly ¼ of a mile across

part of the Lapeer State Game Area's Field

Trial grounds, and everyone pitched in and

helped to haul holding blinds, popper guns,

birds and bird launchers, marshals supplies,

and all the myriad other paraphernalia that

goes into holding a Working Dog test across

the terrain to the test site. Despite the long

walk and hard work, most everyone had a

good time, and laughter and smiles were the

order of the day.

While club members and workers were busy

hauling gear into the test site, the judges had

been busy with the wingers and set up some

very challenging tests. There were no give-

me's at any level and the dogs that passed

earned their ribbons fair and square.

We had 14 entries with 9 handlers. The

WDX dogs ran first, followed by the two

WDQ entries, and then the WD dogs. 8

dogs earned passes, and some excellent field

work was done at all levels.

Our judges were Kim Bryson and Richard

Ewald, and they did an excellent job for us

setting up some good, solid, fun and

challenging tests. Thank-you Kim and

Richard.

The American Chesapeake Club and the

Michigan Chesapeake Bay Retriever Club

2010 Working Dog Stake is now in the

books, and I hope to see everyone at the next

ACC and MCBRC Working Dog Stake.

WD “Virgin” by Robin Short

It was a beautiful, late summer morning in

September. I was all excited because it was

going to be my “first” time working a WD

Test. I was all prepared; boots, cooler with

LOTS of water, Gatorade and ice packs, a

tote bag with extra socks and shoes, a spare

shirt, a light jacket and sweatshirt, sunscreen,

shorts and plenty of wet wipes, and of course,

my “light weight” folding chair.

When I got to the meeting site a bit late, as

usual, most everyone had already gone on to

the staging area. I was asked to stay there to

direct any late comers and after 15 or 20

minutes the last participants had been sent to

the staging area and I joined everyone there.

It was a beehive of activity; people setting up

their vehicles to make sure the dogs were

protected from the sun and making sure

there was plenty of water available, walking

their dogs and generally getting ready for the

long day.

Suddenly it was time to go to the field and set

up! I remember someone telling me it was a

“bit of a walk”. So, I gathered my cooler,

tote, chair and set off. After walking what

seemed like 10 miles and cursing myself for

bringing so much water and thinking I could

have easily done without the chair and tote,

after walking for what must have been only 5

minutes, but felt like an eternity, I finally

reached the field where the judges were. At

this point, I was ready for a nice long break,

and someone to rub my feet, to recover from

my 20 mile hike.

The gunners were getting all set up and the

judges were double checking to make sure

things were good to go. My station was at the

line to assist the judges and take the birds

from the handlers or judges.

It was time! The test dog ran the test and the

WD began. I was amazed by the intensity of

the dogs! They knew what was coming and

wanted so badly to do their job and retrieve

the birds! The handlers were phenomenal

and I could easily see the dedication and

commitment it takes to train and work these

awesome dogs! By the time the land portion

of the WD was done I was convinced that,

with some time and training, my dog and I

could do this, too! Most dogs received a

“pass” for their land retrieves. To the few

that didn’t…GREAT JOB!!

Okay, so now this part of the WD is

complete and it’s time to make the 25 mile

hike back to the staging area for lunch.

Luckily I didn’t have to bring the cooler, tote

and chair. I was glad lunch wasn’t ready

yet…I had to recuperate from the walk back

before I even thought about eating! We had

a nice lunch with hot dogs, cooked by

Michelle Keehn, and side dishes brought by

some members. After 45 minutes or so I was

ready to go again and it was time to head

down to the lake for the water portion of the

WD.

It’s funny how quickly we forget. The water

portion of the test was about 10 miles

BEYOND where the land test was. So now,

after stopping to pick up the cooler, tote and

chair, I continued walking for another

eternity (probably another 5 minutes) and

was surprised when I reached the water

without collapsing. Again, I was ready for a

nice long break!

Once things got underway again, I forgot

about “the walk” and focused on helping and

watching. The land retrieves were very

impressive. However, the water retrieves

allowed me to see the Chessie do what they

were bred for! These dogs are tenacious and

single minded. I’ve never seen anything quite

like it. The eagerness they showed and the

stamina they had absolutely thrilled me! Not

one of them ever gave up; they just kept

swimming on, trying to catch the scent.

Well, the testing was over…so once again it

was time to make the dreaded 45 mile walk

back to the staging area. Only this time, not

only did I need to lug the cooler, tote and

everything else. Thankfully, someone had a

big wheeled cart that we piled a bunch of

stuff on and there were a couple of sleds that

had even more stuff loaded on them. I, of

course, was one of the last people back and

felt as though I had been walking for hours

and was totally exhausted. That’s just

me….I’m a wimp, but I don’t whine.

Once the judges finalized their paperwork,

they announced the placing and handed out

ribbons. Everyone did such a great job! By

the end of the day, I had developed a whole

new respect for the sport of duck hunting and

the people who participate in it. Their love

for the dogs and enthusiasm for working their

dogs is a wonderful thing to witness.

All-in-all, after walking at least 100 miles,

getting slightly sunburned (cause I forgot to

put on the sunscreen), a few bug bites, and

feet so sore that I took my boots off and

drove home barefoot, it was, for me, a great

day! Will I do it again?? IN A

HEARTBEAT!!! Thanks to all for making

my first WD something I will remember for

the rest of my life.
