GREAT! BECAUSE WE KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT CURIOSITY.More than 45 years ago, our founder, Lila McDill, had one vision: Children learn by doing. What started as an experimental lab school in 1970 is now home to nearly 400 students.Using a hands-on, minds-on, and all-heart approach, our students learn math, science, languages, the arts, and the humanities. They learn to use their voice. They learn to be responsible and self-aware, while also attending to the needs and interests of others. And, they are given the time and space to approach every day with the same curiosity we all have as children, constantly asking “what if?”

Turn the page to hear directly from our students and faculty. Our humble beginnings in 1970 in the basement of a church in North Druid Hills belied our outsized ambitions even then. Like a compass, those ambitions guide us even today, keeping us ever mindful of our origins and our destination.

I thank you for your interest in The Children’s School and invite you to visit our campus to experience childhood the way it was meant to be.

For the Children,

DOERS!at the children’s school, We believe children learn by doing. When children engage in hands-on, meaningful play, whether it is outside on the playground or in a circle in the classroom, they’re learning essential 21st century skills like communication and collaboration. With dirt under their fingernails and sweat on their brows, children do their best work – learning to solve problems, negotiating conflict, and rebounding from disappointments. From developing math skills with dominoes to building and programming their own robots, play is at the foundation of all we do at The Children’s School.

“The beauty of project-based learning is that it allows thestudents to ask the questions and drive the process. It makes learningreal and relevant to their lives. Students learn that they can makea difference, no matter how young they are.”

LEARNERS!We believe that above all else, we –children and adults – are learners first. We continually explore the most innovative curricula to ensure that our students and faculty remain challenged and future-focused. Our attention to project-based learning allows even our youngest students the opportunity to explore real world challenges, engage in meaningful inquiry, make their voices heard, and collaborate with classmates. We teach democracy by holding our very own elections, and we study ancient civilizations by recreating Egyptian museums on our campus. When our students graduate from The Children’s School, they move on to Atlanta’s most well-respected independent schools. Most importantly, they have developed a love of learning that sustains them for a lifetime.

CREATORS!We believe in everyone’s right to show up as their authentic self.We believe that everyone has the right to attend a school where their differences—different ethnicities and cultures, different types of families, different beliefs and customs, different styles of learning— are celebrated. Through programs such as Discovery Extended Day, TCS Voices, TCS Players, and many others, our students confidently explore their own passions while respecting that each of their classmates bring different strengths and interests to school each morning. Even beyond our campus, our students and faculty have flexed their creative muscles, launching the Innovator’s Playground at events such as Maker Faire Atlanta and Atlanta Science Festival. Leading our students to become global citizens, we believe there should be no boundaries to creativity, nor to our appreciation for the things that make each of us unique.

“One of the memories I will never forget is camping in

no fifth grade class had ever seen one.fifth grade. We saw a gopher tortoise!

it was an unbelievable experience!”

We learn from the world around us.We believe that one of the most important things we can teach our students is to work together through triumphs, trials, and everything in between! Much of this learning takes place well beyond the four walls of a classroom through our outdoor education program. Students in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade go on overnight camping trips in the fall and spring. Together, they develop basic survival skills and solve unexpected challenges. Whether pitching a tent on Red Top Mountain, identifying mystery critters on St. Simons Island, or fishing right across 10th Street in Piedmont Park, our students learn to not just observe, but to become truly engaged citizens of the world.

TCS students are leaders in the making, and when they leave here,

LEADERS!we believe that even for our youngest friends, when we connect our hands, minds, and hearts, we empower ourselves and others to spark change. All students participate in our Building Character and Community (BCC) Program, which teaches peaceful conflict resolution, establishes anger and temper management skills, and instills the importance of treating others fairly. At an early age, our students understand the principles of social justice and service to others. Through our Big Buddy/Little Buddy program, our younger students benefit from the positive examples of character and integrity from their Big Buddies who are older TCS students. In turn, the Big Buddies develop compassion and leadership skills. At The Children’s School, it’s not enough for our students to simply learn to read, write, add, or subtract. We’re also teaching them to live and lead in a big world.
