Happy August Birthday to our Two Centenarians!

Mary Arnot, 100 years young , August 25 Mary is a Charter Member of North Chevy Chase Christian Church, having been a member of its predecessor Columbia Heights Christian Church. Mary served as the church’s secretary during the early 60’s. She was an active member of Christian Women’s Fellowship. Along with her sister, Helen Joseph, there is hardly a birthday in the church that the celebrant doesn’t receive a clever and hand-designed birthday card (often including origami-designed dollar bills!) from Mary and Helen.

Mary is a priceless treasure that we celebrate on this special birthday! To send cards: Mary Arnot 9701 Veirs Drive, Rm 1PC-1340 Rockville, MD 20850

Maude Covington, 103 years young, August 28 Maude has been a long time member of the Christian Church and moved here with her daughter, Jean Akers, when Jean returned to this area and the church in 2008. We celebrate Maude’s love of and commitment to her church! To send cards: Maude Covington 10737 McGregor Drive Columbia, MD 21044

What Our Folks Have Been Up to This Summer...

DIANE BARLOW LEADS TRIP ABROAD.. .Great Cathedra l Libraries of England, a course offered by the College of Infor-mation Studies, University of Maryland College Park. Students and instructors in the course visited the libraries and ar-chives of six English cathedrals,

meeting with professional staff, viewing historical and artistic treas-ures, and participating in the contemporary life of the cathedral and its library and archives. The group has documented their jour-ney in words and images through a blog as a way to reflect on their experiences. You can view the blog at http://blog.umd.edu/inst729-cathedrals/

AMELIA & CHRIS DODGE in early June we traveled to the Dominican Republic for one last vacation as a family of two before our son arrives in October. We stayed at Dreams La Romana, which is a beautiful resort right on the wa-ter. Our days were spent relaxing on the beach, trying all of the different restaurants at the resort, swimming in the ocean and pool and enjoying the beautiful scen-ery. We enjoyed lots of walking, as the resort is very large. Eve-ry morning on our walk to breakfast we stopped to look at three flamingos that live on the grounds. In the afternoons we ate fresh mango and pineapple from a fruit stand set up right on the beach. Chris' 32nd birthday fell on our last full day of vacation, which was a great end to a wonderful week. The trip was very relaxing and a great start to our summer!

This Summer, cont. A BROCK/BROCK/ROTH FAMILY VACATION IN COSTA RICA When Shelley suggested almost a year ago that we take a family vacation, we didn’t imagine what it might turn out to be. We had enjoyed many holidays “stuffed” all together in our small Bethany Condo, but a “real” vacation with a group of 10, ages 2 ½ to 70, seemed a bit ambitious. Undaunted, Shelley began her research and discovered that Southwest Airlines had a new nonstop route from BWI to San Jose, CR, and the cost was very reasonable. From that, Shelley’s persis-tent research and a few family powwows discussing logistics, the planning took flight! The result was a 9 day visit in a most wonderful country: taking walks in the rain forest, trekking across hang-ing bridges through the forest canopy, descending 500 rugged steps to the base of a waterfall (and back up!), motoring on a boat through a mangrove forest, dipping our feet in the clear Pacific on a sandy beach, making our own dark chocolate from scratch from cacao beans, enjoying a traditional Costa Rican dinner pre-pared for us by a gourmet chef, viewing myriad tropical creatures big and small (flying, creeping, swinging, slithering, sleeping) and exotic plants in every color of the rainbow. A few of the group went zip lining as well! It was a vacation far exceeding our expectations, where everyone, whatever age, had a great time. Now the questions is: what will be our next vacation?

2015 GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) IN THE US AND CANADA Eight members of North Chevy Chase Christian Church participated in the 2015 General

Assembly in Columbus, OH, in July. The Assembly, attended by close to 4,000 Dis-ciples from all over the US and Canada, celebrated its 25 year partnership with the United Church of Christ, passed resolutions concerning gun violence, response to

the Charleston murders and church burnings, commemorated 100 Years since the Armenian Genocide, adopted a Call for Peace, Justice and Reunification in the Korean Peninsula, and many more issues of the day. Participating in workshops, fellowship events, and worship together were Bob & Deb Perry, Laird & Evelyn Thomason, Dorothy Brown, Nancy Solomon, Rosetta Robinson, and Cheryl Tatham.

Four of the eight attendees

Perry Family Summer Fun The Perry family has enjoyed vacationing together for the last few summers. The va-cations trips have included Disney, Bethany Beach and Deep Creek Lake. The past two years have been spent at Deep Creek (a most enjoyable vacation destination). Our family now consists of Deb (Ni Ni), Bob (Bob Bob), Rob, Talya, Morgan (6) and Noah (4) Perry and Bethany, Michael, Gabi (5), and Tanner (3) Kaye. The time is filled with fun and excitement. The grandchildren all enjoy one another and get along quite well. We thoroughly enjoy our time together. There are many things to do at the lake which include: boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golf, spa trips,

grilled dinners, eating s’mores cooked over the pit fire. When it rains there are games and activities which Deb has brought to share with the children. The adults have enjoyed playing at pantomime. We feel fortu-nate to enjoy these times together. A week is not long enough or just enough. Everyone pitches in to get the chores done. Deb and I usually come home quite tired. One of the activities enjoyed by all is the hot tub. My favorite picture of the week is attached. You can see all of the kids joining me in the tub. We cherish these times together and will continue the Perry family vacation as long as possible. It is a blessing to be able to enjoy our beautiful family.
