REFLECTIONS

GOSPEL MEDITATION

April 8, 2018

2nd Sunday of Easter,

Divine Mercy Sunday

Should we be a little easier on Thomas? The last few days have been a

whirlwind. On Thursday, a Passover celebration went horribly awry as

Jesus was betrayed and taken into custody for unstated crimes. Less

than 24 hours later, the simple arrest has turned into a death sentence

to be carried out that very afternoon. Most of the disciples fled,

including Thomas. He would have heard of the events of Good Friday

secondhand, in shock over the death of his Lord and Master. Then

Sunday morning arrives with joy from a few disciples-Jesus is risen! But

there is no persistent sight of him, only Mary Magdalene's quick

moment in the garden and an empty tomb. Another day passes. The

Apostles are gathered that Monday night, but Thomas is absent. He

returns to a jubilant report of the risen Lord. Again, Thomas has seen

nothing.

The experience must have been surreal. Did Jesus really appear raised

from the dead? Did he really suffer and die? Has all of this been some

strange hoax? Desperate for an answer, Thomas insists, "Unless I see

the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks

and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

After his resurrection, Jesus' body--mangled and bloody from the

crucifixion--is restored. Did it need the scars? A perfected body would

have taught us one lesson: everything is renewed as it once was, the

past erased. Jesus chooses another lesson, however. He retains his

scars that we might know him. In the whirlwind of our lives, we make

our own mistakes, our own betrayals and compromises. In the

resurrected Jesus, we see a God who does not forget his own sorrow.

We are invited to meet him--wound for wound--and place our hand on

his own nail-scarred palm, the eternal sign of his everlasting mercy.

JUST FOR KIDS

Sharing the Gospel After Jesus died, his disciples were afraid the Jewish leaders would kill them, too. They hid together in one room. They locked the doors and windows. Then Jesus appeared in front of them. They were not afraid

any more. When you are afraid, Jesus will help you too. Tell him why you are afraid. Believe in

Jesus. He will give you everything you need. He wants you to live

with him forever in heaven.

Prayer Jesus, I believe in you.

Lead me to your heavenly home.

BELLS! BELLS! BELLS!

The rubrics for celebrating the Thursday Mass of the Lord’s

Supper during Holy Week call for the ringing of the church

bell during the singing of the Glory to God. After this, the

bell is to remain silent until singing of the Gloria at the Easter

Vigil. We would like to invite the parishioners to bring bells

from home to ring during the singing of the Gloria. We will

COMMUNITY

B.R.E.A.D. UPDATE

St. Elizabeth is a member of B.R.E.A.D.(Building Responsibility, Equality, and Dignity) an organization of over 40 congregations striving for Justice. Welcome Columbus Committee: (9 organizations in the coalition) As many as 70,000 adult citizens do not have or cannot obtain a government ID because they don’t have the documents that the BMV will accept. Municipal ID programs across the country (New York City, Baltimore, Chicago, San Francisco are only a few) offer flexibility in the types of documents that applicants can present to qualify for an ID while still preventing identity fraud. Councilmember Stinziano has drafted the legislation which is stalled. We recently met with Councilmember Elizabeth Brown who will also be working with us. Please attend the Nehemiah Action to give this a PUSH.

Juvenile Justice Committee: This committee has been exploring Restorative Practices as an alternative to school suspensions and, as a way to build relation-ships that strengthen not only the classroom, but the wider community. Five BREAD leaders traveled to Pittsburgh Public School district in November to ob-serve their practices. Juvenile Judge Elizabeth Gill followed through on our re-quest and will have the Restorative Justice Circles evaluated by the International Institute of Restorative Practices. Because of YOU the courts have already seen an increase in children being diverted.

Hire and Better Pay! Don’t Throw Away Committee: This committee is ex-panding access to living wage jobs for people with criminal backgrounds and bringing wealth to marginalized neighborhoods. BREAD achieved passage of a city ordinance giving preference, on city building contracts, to contractors who partner with workforce development agencies and hire people with criminal backgrounds.

Youth and Family Concerns Committee: This new committee is concerned about grandparents who are taking care of their grandchildren and need more resources available to them. The Committee also determined that about 54,000 units of affordable housing is needed to meet the needs of families who want safe and affordable places to live. The committee is working on both issues.

MARK your calendar: Monday, April 9, 7 pm Rally at Congregation Tifereth Israel. Hear testimonies, learn research and receive Action Tickets.

WE NEED YOU! Monday May 7: Nehemiah Assembly at the Celeste Center on Ohio State Fairgrounds. WE WILL CARPOOL. Meet at St. Elizabeth at 6:00.

THIS IS A BIG DEAL. SHOW OUR POWER IN NUMBERS! PLEASE HELP US FIGHT FOR JUSTICE. Sr. Jean Conrad [email protected] 614 794-

School Subsidies St. Elizabeth Parish

The value of a Catholic education

cannot be overstated.

In order to assist our parishioners who have made the decision to enroll their

children in a Catholic grade or secondary school within the

Diocese of Columbus, St. Elizabeth Parish offers partial tuition subsidies

on a year-to-year basis.

The requirements for such assistance are as follows:

· The family must be registered at St. Elizabeth parish prior to the school year for which you are requesting assistance.

· The family must attend Mass at St. Elizabeth Parish regularly, (not spo-radically, monthly, or once in a while.)

· The family must contribute at least $25.00 weekly, through the use of Sunday envelopes.

· The family must be active in other areas of parish life, such as volun-teering in the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, or by helping at an event such as the annu-al Spaghetti Dinner or Fish Fry.

Please submit any paperwork that the school has given you to our Book Keeper. After the parish administrators have reviewed all factors, a decision will be made as to the amount of the subsidy offered to each family that has applied. Due date is April 30th.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP!

That’s what you’ll have after a Worldwide

Marriage Encounter weekend!

The next two weekends are July 13-15 and

September 14-16, both in central Ohio. Marriage Encounter is

where married couples can get away from jobs, kids, chores, and

phones and focus only on each other. For more information to to

apply, contact Paul & Marilou Clouse at 614-834-6880 or visit

wwmecolumbus.org.

Young Adults! Trivia Night at Yabo's Tacos

The Columbus Frassati Society invites young adults to the Upper

Arlington Yabo's Tacos on Monday, April 16th for a friendly game of trivia. Meet us there at

7pm, and use your trivial knowledge to help us win!
