Welcome Thank you for registering in our Religious Education Program. Our program is structured to provide catechetical

instruction on the Catholic Faith to all parish children. We want our children to be nourished and nurtured in their Catholic

faith so that they learn to trust and understand the very special and never-ending LOVE Christ has for them. As we teach

and live as Christ, the more in love they will become with Him, leading them to want more of Him. They will be living

their Faith. As Catholic parents, it is YOUR responsibility to be your child’s first and primary teacher of our Faith.

Our Religious Education Program is designed to build upon what you should have already begun to teach.

Faith Formation Personnel Parish Catechetical Leader (PCL) – The Parish Catechetical Leader is accountable to the Pastor and entrusted with the task of planning, implementing, and evaluating the total faith formation program in the parish. This includes, but is not limited to: PreK through 12th grade and college aged students Faith Formation programs, Sacramental Preparation, Baptismal Preparation for Parents and Godparents. Our current PCL is Teresa Foegelle.

PCL Assistant – PCL Assistant helps with the tasks of planning, implementing and evaluating the total faith formation program in the Parish. PCL Assistant will assume the responsibilities of the PCL in their absence. Our current Assistant PCL is Loretta Bolting.

Catechists – A Catechist is a person who has accepted the call of the local church to teach as Jesus did. Catechist means “one who echoes.” Therefore, the catechist’s ministry is to echo and re-echo the story and vision of Jesus to the community. All catechists, which includes all teachers, aides and helpers, are volunteers and deserve and will get the utmost respect from all people involved. These people are also Safe Environment Compliant as per the requirements of the Diocese of Victoria. They give many hours preparing for their classes and attending training sessions. Catechists are encouraged to deepen their own level of understanding of their faith by attending Catechist training course, by attending Catechetical conferences, or by completing Diocesan programs such as Echoes or Pastoral Institute classes. Each classroom has a minimum of two catechists present for each session. Parents are needed and urged to volunteer in the program. Dedication to your faith and a love for children/youth are the key characteristics of those we seek to work in this ministry. Everything else we can teach you.

EXPECTATIONS OF CATECHISTS:

Be a Christian role model, by providing a loving atmosphere within the learning environment so that every student can feel accepted and safe.

Prepare and teach the curriculum.

Communicate regularly with and involve parents in the faith development of their students.

Attend teacher meetings, trainings and all required sessions in the Safe Environment program and to strictly follow the Code of Conduct as stated.

Communicate with PCL and DRE about concerns or comments to insure a better program.

Keep confidential all student information and concerns.

If you are interested please contact the Parish Office at (361) 564-2893. Catechists will keep information about your children confidential. Please let the Parish Catechetical Leaders and catechists know if you have a child that may need modified work or some other accommodations. +

Parents are still the primary teachers of the faith.

Hall Monitors – Adults who volunteer their time and energy to help maintain a safe atmosphere outside of the classrooms. They will be available in case a child needs to be escorted to a necessary location due to illness and/or other incidents that may arise. Share your faith

Do your own work

Show appropriate behavior in the classroom and hallway

Be mindful that the Church is a sacred place and it is to be treated as such.

Parents/Guardians are the resource for help with a behavioral need. The catechist and Pastor will seek the parents/guardian suggestions as to the cause of inappropriate behavior. This collaboration will result in positive approaches to working with and/or ending the behavior. If a student’s behavior disrupts the learning process for himself/herself or for others, the steps listed will be followed to ensure that class participation may continue. Behavior appropriate for the Holy Cross Religious Education classroom is equivalent to that extended in the school setting. Catechists will use positive discipline methods when needed to reinforce those expectations. The Holy Cross Religious Education program discipline procedure is based on rules and consequences. There are few rules but they must be enforced clearly, concisely and consistently. CONSEQUENCES OF ACTIONS OF STUDENTS At the first incident the student will be reminded of expected behavior and the consequences of misbehavior. After the second incident, the student will be sent to the pastor about appropriate behavior and possible solutions to the problem. A disciplinary letter, written by the student explaining his/her fault will be mailed to the parents on the next business day. After returning to class, if there are repeated problems, the students’ parent/guardian will be called. Severe problems or ongoing problems may result in the dismissal from the program, or parent/guardian attendance may be required to continue in class. Any student caught with illegal substances (i.e., drugs or alcohol, etc.) will be turned over to legal authorities. ATTENDANCE All Religious Education classes will be held in at the Holy Cross Activity Center. Class times are as follows:

Pre-K -5th Grade Sunday 10:45 to 11:45 am Grades 6th -12th and College Aged Students Wednesday 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. It is important that your student(s) attend classes regularly and consistently. Any missed classes will be a disadvantage to the student in their learning process. Attendance is recorded each time class meets. All attendance records are kept in the students’ permanent records on file in the parish office at the completion of each year. If you know in advance that your student will be absent, please inform the students’ catechist or the parish office the week prior to the absence. If your child will be missing some classes on a regular basis (i.e. shared custody) contact the parish office or your students’ catechist so your situation can be addressed. BAD WEATHER DAYS If classes are going to be cancelled for the Sunday classes, it will be announced at 9:30 services and teachers will be asked to text their parents as soon as possible. If Wednesday classes are cancelled, we will send out text messages at least an hour before class time. If weather comes up while students are in class, we will either shelter in place or try to evacuate students, whichever is safer. Parents will be notified of situations and instructions. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF STUDENTS When dropping off your child, make sure to come in front of the building to drop off and make sure they go into the building. All students should be picked up promptly after classes to ensure their safety. Teachers will bring the children to the front porch to wait for parents. Parents need to come to the porch and pick up their child. NO CHILD will be allowed to cross the parking lot with an adult. This is for their safety. Transportation to and from all classes and events/retreats sponsored by the Victoria Diocese and/or Holy Cross Church will be the responsibility of the parents/guardian.

When a parent/guardian cannot be contacted, the people listed as your ‘emergency contacts’ will be notified. Please let us know promptly if you have a change in telephone number or if your emergency contact has changed.

HEALTH CONCERNS AND MEDICATION

The policy of the Holy Cross Religious Education program is for no catechist or other personnel in the program to administer medication to a student. However, in cases of great need, medication will be distributed with the signed permission of the parent/guardian of the student. If your child/youth is on medication that makes him/her extremely sleepy or has other side effects, please let the catechist or aide know in advance. If the student is on medication for hyperactivity, please make sure that his/her medication is in effect during religious education time. Health concerns should be brought to the attention of the Catechist and Director of Religious Education during registration and updated as the need arises. As a matter of policy, please do not allow your child/youth to bring either prescription or non-prescription medication on campus. Please let us know if your student has an allergy to any food items. Both catechist and parish office should know of any medical condition that might warrant a need for extra caution or supervision. All information will remain confidential.

Family oriented movies, E-books and audio to enhance your spiritual life. Perfect for the entire family and available on any device. Grades PreK – 8th Grade Holy Cross is currently using the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies for Preschool through 8th Grade. The 32 Weekly lessons – September through May – flow from the Gospels as celebrated at Sunday Mass, integrating children and young teens with the ongoing life of the parish community. Unlike traditional textbooks, lessons build on the foundation of the Sunday Gospels to provide through instruction in doctrine, sacraments, commandments, and prayer. The program is based on the Sunday assembly and encourages families to attend Mass every week. A catechism handbook, What the Church Believes and Teaches, reviews and reinforces basic Church teachings that need to be mastered at each grade level.

PreK/Kinder - Seeds First Grade - Promise Second Grade - Good News Third Grade – Fifth Grade - Venture Sixth Grade – Eighth Grade- Visions Pflaum Gospel Weeklies Parent’s Resource Materials are available at www.pfaumweeklies.com.

Grade 2 – Reconciliation/Communion –

First Reconciliation Student (Pflaum) - Together in Jesus Program - Lessons focus on

biblical stories about Christian living -- including the Good Samaritan, the Ten Commandments, the

Sermon on the Mount, and the Prodigal Son - to help children appreciate that God loves them and is

always ready to forgive them. Activity stickers help children relate the stories to their lives. A

Reconciliation Prayer Service booklet for each child to make helps review the parts of the sacrament.

First Eucharist Student (Pflaum) - Together in Jesus Program - Lessons explore the sacraments of initiation, the liturgical seasons, and the biblical stories of Zacchaeus, the loaves and the fish, and the Last Supper -- drawing children into fuller and more active participation in the life of the Church. An easy-to-make First Eucharist booklet teaches the parts of the mass and serves as a memento of the special event.

Ninth Grade (Confirmation I) -Junior High Candidate Edition (Pflaum) -Gifted with the

Spirit-Built on the practical principles that have made our Confirmation programs perennial favorites,

this revised and improved course for junior high emphasizes ways to help young teens:

More fully participate in the life of the Church Develop their own spirituality Prepare to celebrate the Rite of Confirmation

Most lessons begin with a Call to Prayer, cover Catholic tradition clearly and in depth, include Scripture Search to strengthen biblical connections, and offer a couple of lively activities to keep young minds engaged. Lessons continue with ideas for works of mercy or justice young people can perform to serve others outside their sessions, and a Recall to Prayer for a quiet closure. Photos and text are both well suited to the young teen audience. Finding God in Prayer Backpack Journal will be used in class as well as The Living Word Sunday Gospel Reflections and Actions for Teens will be sent home periodically.

Tenth Grade (Confirmation II): Senior High Candidate Edition (Pflaum)-Receiving the

Gift of the Spirit

Built on the practical principles that have made our Confirmation programs perennial favorites, this revised and improved course for senior high emphasizes ways to help young teens:

More fully participate in the life of the Church Develop their own spirituality Prepare to celebrate the Rite of Confirmation Each lesson helps catechists lead candidates to strengthen their

relationship with Jesus as The Way, The Truth and The Life. Photos help them visualize meaning (so important today), written material is clear and concise, and activities are both thought-provoking and involving.

Prayer, sacraments, and service are explored in depth as the framework for a Catholic lifestyle. Each unit includes a prayer service, the relationship among sacraments is explored, and the topic of service is presented fully both in photos and text.

11th Grade through Young Adult (College Aged Students) – The Living Word™ helps youth ministers, parish catechists, and high school religion teachers to engage in a process of catechesis that finds its source in the liturgy. The sessions in this resource are designed to enhance the liturgical preparation, liturgical participation, and liturgical living of teens through reflection on the Lectionary readings. Additional Resources such as Alpha, Newman Connection, etc. will be used. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES The Diocese of Victoria has a wonderful website available online; www.victoriadiocese.org offers all parish families access to current events, training opportunities, and a library and media center as well as daily spiritual reflections through scripture readings. Visit their site or call 361-573-0828 for more information. You can also visit www.usccb.org for more information and links to free apps for your phone or iPad. Parents are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to participate in activities sent home from classes. These are meant to evangelize to the entire family and to grow your faith together. Please ask your child about their classes and we encourage parents to be a part of their classes.
