Prelude: Pastorale (Corelli) & Pifa (Handel) Processional Hymn: Once in Royal David’s City Irby

Solo: Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And through all his wondrous childhood, he would honour and obey. Love, and watch the lowly maiden, in whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he.

And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by. We shall see him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high; When like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.

Greeting Priest The grace … And also with you.

Collect of the Day Priest Eternal God, this holy night is radiant with the brilliance of your one true light. As we have known the revelation of that light on earth, bring us to see the splendour of your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7 p. 5 Psalm 96 p. 5 Gradual Hymn: 119 Silent Night Stille Nacht The Gospel: Luke 2:1-20 p. 6 Sermon: The Reverend Canon David Clunie Motet: Before the World Began John L. Bell Before the world began, one Word was there; grounded in God he was, rooted in care; by him all things were made, in him was love displayed, through him God spoke, and said, “I am for you.” Life found in him its source, death found its end; light found in him its course, darkness its friend. For neither death nor doubt nor darkness can put out the glow of God, the shout, “I am for you.”

The Intercessions The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

The Offertory Generous financial support is our expression of gratitude which along with our time and talents enables us to provide worship at St. Bart’s and support God’s work in service in our community and beyond. Offertory Hymn: 154 Joy to the World Antioch

The Calendar ~

Christmas Eve Finding balance between sacred and secular celebration at Christmas is not a

new task. The secular feast has always been a search for pleasure: eating and

drinking, dancing and flirting, exchanging gifts and playing games. In the

1640s and 50s, the Puritans banned Christmas and its twelve holidays.

George Herbert’s Christmas, composed just before the Puritans were in

charge, reflects these tensions. It is a poem in two parts: the first a sonnet

(printed below); the second in lyric form. The sonnet relies on St John’s

Gospel’s soaring opening; the lyric from St Luke’s pastoral and practical

account of Jesus’s birth. Herbert came from a noble household, close to

court. He had led a glittering academic career until his vocation to a parish

ministry crystallized through prayer, marriage, illness, and changing political

circumstances. He was well acquainted with the thrill of hunting and the

possibility of being lost in a land with few maps and roads. He knew Jesus as

his King and intimate friend, and he knew the cosmic and domestic

dimensions of the Incarnation. His stunning encapsulation of St John’s

message and Mary’s care “O Thou, whose glorious, yet contracted light/Wrapped in

night’s mantle, stole into a manger” is nearly 400 years old, yet as fresh as ever.

Herbert knew the Incarnation leads to the Cross, but his recognition of this

is heart-warming in its similarity to Christina Rossetti’s meditation In the

bleak mid winter, written over 200 years later. She asked, “What can I give

Him?”, and the answer, like Herbert’s, is at home. “Give my heart.” The

Incarnation fuses the sacred and secular; our response may do so too.

All after pleasures as I rid one day,

My horse and I, both tir’d, body and mind,

With full cry of affections, quite astray,

I took up in the next inn I could find.

There when I came, whom found I but my dear,

My dearest Lord, expecting till the grief

Of pleasures brought me to him, ready there

To be all passengers’ most sweet relief?

O Thou, whose glorious, yet contracted light,

Wrapt in night’s mantle, stole into a manger;

Since my dark soul and brutish is thy right,

To Man of all beasts be not thou a stranger:

Furnish and deck my soul, that thou mayst have

A better lodging than a rack or grave.

From Christmas, George Herbert (1593-1633)

The Gospel

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. (Luke 2:1-20)

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep Darkness, on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:2-7) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 96

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. Sing to the Lord and bless his name; proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations and his wonders among all peoples. Refrain.

For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; but it is the Lord who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! Oh, the power and the splendour of his sanctuary! Refrain.

Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; ascribe to the Lord honour and power. Ascribe to the Lord the honour due his name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him. Refrain.

Tell it out among the nations: “The Lord is king! He has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; let the field be joyful and all that is therein. Refrain.

Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, when he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with his truth. Refrain.
