The city

A city, a relatively large settlement, although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town. Many cities have a particular

administrative legal or historical status based on local law.

The Hidden City

Hidden, mythical or lost cities• El dorado- A mythical city supposedly located somewhere in south America. The

city is said to be allegedly rich, with tales of gold-paved streets, temples and rich mines of gold.• Atlantis- A lost island subcontinent often idealised as an advanced utopian society holding wisdom that could bring world peace

• Troy- A legendary city in what is now north-western Turkey, made famous by the Trojan war. The archaeology of Try contains several layers• Petra- The fabled “rose red city”. The ancient capital of the Nabataean kingdom, a vast

unique city carved into the side of the wadi musa canyon in Jordan. It was used as an important junction for silk and spice routes that linked Asia with Europe and Africa but was abandoned in the 6th century after several earthquakes.

corruptionPolitical corruption and organised crime went hand in hand in cities such as Atlantic city during the 1920s and 30s. Atlantic city is famous for the importing/ exporting of illegal alcohol, hosting of illegal gambling and prostitution which was cleverly disguised as speakeasies. This all together made many corrupt officials and MPs very wealthy.

The underbelly• New York sewer systems is one of the most extensive water systems

in the world which relies on a combination of tunnels, aqueducts and reservoirs to meet the daily needs of the citizens and visitors migrating externally. There are also stories of sewer alligators and societies of “mole people” (homeless people) living under New York and other cities.• Paris catacombs: the catacombs beneath Paris hold the remains of

over 6 million people.• Tunnels have been discovered linking warehouses in Mexico to the

USA which are used for transporting drugs under the boarder.

Wildlife • Scientists excavate underground ant city that 'rivals the Great Wall of China‘A

sophisticated underground ant city once populated by millions of insects has been discovered by a team of scientists.

The abandoned megalopolis, which features vast subterranean highways, paths and gardens, was found buried beneath the earth in Brazil. It is thought to have housed one of the biggest ant colonies in the world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFg21x2sj-M

Power and Technology

• Pressure sensors- this is a new type of renewable energy that has been developed, they are floor tiles that will power the city. 7Watts of kinetic energy is created when pedestrians stand on the floor slab. The energy can then be stored in a battery for later use.• Transport- by 2050 all German trains will run on

renewable energy. This will work amount of renewable energy is calculated for the distance required, then100% of that power is taken from renewable energy resources (wind/sola/hydo-electric power)

• Rotating tower- 80 floor moving skyscraper in Dubai, each floor will be able to move independently. • The tower will be powered from wind turbines and sola panels.

Enough energy is produced to power another 5 similar sized buildings in the vicinity. This building could give up to 1,200,000 KW of energy per day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY0Uuyf8Xhw • Power through surveillance- surveillance is the monitoring of

behaviour. Cameras are meant to prevent crime. There is one CCTV camera per 11 people in the UK. The population of Cardiff is 346,000 which means there are, on average, 31,454 cameras in this city.

Migration

Human migrationHuman migration is the movement from one place to another with the intention of settling permanently or temporarily.Bangladeshi community in Swansea: people migrate from Bangladesh as it is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters and greatly effects and upsets peoples lives. The major disasters concerned are:

• Flash floods• Drought• Tornados ad cyclones• Storm surge• Riverbank erosion ad landslides.

people migrate for economic reasons such as employment. Tokyo has the highest GDP in the world followed by New York and LA. America has the highest average earnings in the world.Forced migration: the slave trade is an example of this as African natives were forced to migrate across the Atlantic to e sold as slaves in American and European cities.

Wildlife Radio active wolves: beyond the checkpoints surrounding Chernobyl there are no humans. However, when the humans fled the zone became populated by wildlife and now some say that the “inhabitable” zone surrounding Chernobyl now has the highest wolf population I the world, although the wolves seem to be thriving their diet, along with al the other animals in the zone is contaminated and even if a human was to breathe in 1 hair from one of these wolves he/she would become poisoned.
