City Council Approves Ordinance for No U-Turns on Lindbergh

Since MoDOT created the new exit ramp for North Lindbergh Blvd. going east off I-270, there has been an increase of U-turn infractions at the stoplight intersection due to the center barrier being torn out. To help eliminate this problem, the Hazelwood City Council approved recently Ordinance 4263.13 which adds 3 more “No U-turn” intersections on its strip of North Lindbergh.

According to Ed Carlstrom, city manager, the new stoplight intersection created at the off ramp of eastbound I-270 and North Lindbergh is causing motorists to take unnecessary risks. “With the concrete center barrier gone, we’re seeing more instances of drivers making U-turns North and South at that intersection, causing more problems with potential traffic accidents. Therefore, we recommended ‘No U-turn’ signs to be installed on both sides of the light.”

The Council also approved having “No U-turns” placed at two additional intersections on Lindbergh Blvd. The first one is North and South Lindbergh at Elm Grove Lane. A second intersection is the one at N. Lindbergh Blvd. and James S. McDonnell Blvd. in all directions. It is now illegal to make U-turns at all three of these intersections on Lindbergh. The fine for making a U-turn is $80.

New Election Brings Back Familiar Faces We want to say thank you to those of you who took the time to exercise your

constitutional right to vote on April 2, for the 2013 municipal election. The following four incumbent candidates filed for re-election and ran unopposed this time around: Ward 1 Councilwoman Carol Stroker; Ward 3 Councilman Don Ryan; Ward 5 Councilman Russell Todd; and Ward 7 Councilwoman Rosalie “Ro” Hendon.

Since no other residents filed to run as challengers, these incumbent candidates automatically won to serve another term. Each of them is grateful to be given another opportunity to serve the residents of Hazelwood. They look forward to playing a key role in making Hazelwood a hot spot for new business development, job creation, and population growth.

To be eligible to run for a Council seat, residents must be at least 21 years old, a registered voter of the City and a resident of Hazelwood for at least two (2) years immediately prior to the election. A Ward council member shall be a resident of the Ward which he/she represents. For more information on local elections, contact City Clerk Colleen Wolf at (314) 513-5020.

Hazelwood Joins ‘Eat Smart in Parks’ Initiative to Promote Healthier Lifestyle

Something new is being added to the concession stand menus offered at White Birch Bay Aquatic Center and the Athletic Sports Complex this summer. The Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division is joining a statewide effort called “Eat Smart in Parks,” aimed at helping children make healthier eating choices. Items such as fresh fruits, dairy products, and 100% frozen fruit juices will be offered to them as a way to curb the growing problem of childhood obesity in the state of Missouri.

Though the Show-Me State is known for its parks and natural resources, Missouri also has the unfortunate distinction of being named one of the top 10 most obese states in the country. Hazelwood Parks and Recreation officials, in partnership with City Council members such as Ward 3 Councilman Don Ryan, are taking a leadership role in helping people incorporate healthier food choices in their diet.

“We believe the public should have a variety of options to choose from at our concession stands. We are making a concerted effort to promote new healthy menu choices in addition to the old favorites,” said Councilman Don Ryan. “We have patrons of all ages who come to our facilities several times a week, and while it’s nice to treat yourself to nachos or ice cream occasionally, we’re hoping this will encourage them to make a healthy choice more often.”

The City of Hazelwood plans to introduce new health food products at its concession stands throughout the summer. The goal is to find out what the public likes to consume. Once these popular food items are identified, they may be added to the regular menu. Efforts will also be made to buy foods produced locally and to establish an advisory team to help promote healthiness throughout the community.

The City of Hazelwood is hosting its 3rd Annual recycle Day on June 1 for local residents in the parking lot at St . Louis Outlet Mall .

Hazelwood’s Green Corner –Ideas to Save Time and Money

The Hazelwood Green Committee is launching a new informational series on “green ideas” to help you save time and dollars. These seasonal topics will be featured with an environmental theme. This committee of volunteers meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month, except August and December, at 5 p.m. in Civic Center East. Come join us and share your green ideas!

CURBSIDE RECYCLING REMINDERS• Plastic caps may be left on plastic containers• Place shredded paper inside a paper bag to avoid spillage• Remember to remove Styrofoam from cardboard boxes• Remove plastic and/or foil sleeves from cereal boxes• Remember June 1 is Hazelwood’s 3rd Annual Recycle Day

AIR CONDITIONING SAVINGS• Improve attic ventilation by installing a roof fan• Wash the outside A/C condenser coil monthly• Consider updating your thermostat• Shade the south side of your house with trees/plants

EROSION CONTROLS• Consider rain barrels or a rain garden• Add compost to clay soils to decrease runoff and increase absorption• Add deep root plants to slopes• Throwing grass clippings or brush in erosion areas increases erosion by choking off plant growth

MOSQUITO CONTROL• Make sure roof gutters are free flowing• Olive oil can be used to treat terminus openings to underground piping• Empty plant pots & trays• Use mosquito fish or goldfish in decorative ponds• Clean and replace bird bath water

CONSERVE WATER, USE DROUGHT RESISTANT PLANTS• Lawn/turf varieties with deep roots require less water• Other drought-resistant plants include native prairie perennials, plants with thick fleshy stems and leaves, and waxy coated or hairy leaves, etc.

You Can Make a Difference Participating in recycle Day

The City of Hazelwood is hosting its 3rd Annual Recycle Day on Saturday, June 1, in the St. Louis Outlet Mall (formerly St. Louis Mills) parking lot near the Ice Zone. Residents can drop off their unwanted recyclable items between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. This event is free; there are no drop-off charges.

Participating vendors for the 2013 event include Allied Waste Services, WITS, Inc. (Web Innovations & Technology Services), The Home Depot, and Shred-It. Items they will be accepting include anything with a power cord or batteries such as TVs, VCR/DVD players, computer keyboards/monitors/printers, kitchen appliances, stereos/boom boxes, MP3 players, and cellular phones.

Other items collected include the following: kitchenware; refrigerators; dishwashers; washers; dryers; furnaces; air conditioners; humidifiers; medical/diagnostic equipment; lawn equipment; industrial machinery; old motors & transformers; batteries; personal papers for document shredding; fluorescent and CFL light bulbs; clothing; shoes; toys; baby supplies; household items (dishes must be in boxes); and single stream recycling materials. No household/patio furniture, mattresses, tires, or hazardous materials such as paints solvents and chemicals will be accepted.

For the last two events, more than 1,322 vehicles dropped off nearly 159.5 tons of recyclable materials. We anticipate this year’s event to be the biggest and best ever. “Our goal is for Hazelwood to be at the forefront of today’s green initiative with an effective sustainability program that diverts recyclable items away from landfills,” said Mayor Matthew Robinson. “Together, we can make a difference in saving our planet by reducing our consumption of natural resources, being more energy efficient, and recycling the products we use.”

In partnership with the Hazelwood Garden Club, Hazelwood’s Historic Preservation Commission will be hosting its 1st Annual Plant Exchange and Donation event, scheduled for Saturday, April 27, at Brookes Park. Hours are from 9 a.m. to Noon. Residents are welcome to bring their excess perennials they are dividing to swap or donate. Plans are in the works for the Historic Preservation Commission to create a garden of native plants that would represent those of the past. Excess plants will be donated to Gateway Greening for use in neighborhood gardens. For more information, contact Steve Rahmberg at (314) 921-4762.

robertson’s Fire Chief Introduced at Council Meeting

Perfection Clutch has set up its base of operation at 630 Lambert Point Drive. It plans to renovate the facility into a new warehouse with the expectations of creating 10 local jobs. The company chose Hazelwood over another site in the state of Illinois.

The company distributes Chinese-made auto parts to customers in the United States. These are aftermarket parts for the automotive industry such as clutches, flywheels and clutch hydraulics. Its list of top clients includes O’Reilly, Auto Zone and Advanced Auto Parts stores.

The Hazelwood Fire Department partners with the Robertson Fire Protection District in providing emergency fire/ambulance services to residents in the northwest portion of the city. At the City Council meeting on February 20, Mayor Robinson spent a few moments introducing Robertson’s new fire chief, Don Miner, and saying good-bye to Robertson’s former fire chief, David Tilley, who announced his retirement after 15 years of service.

“I’d like to thank the City of Hazelwood for the times I had working with you all,” Tilley said. “Hopefully our department will continue the long-lasting relationship.”

Miner is a 30-plus year veteran of the University City Fire Department. He recently retired from University City a few months before accepting his new job with Robertson.

Members of Team HPD run into frigid 38° water at Creve Coeur Lake for this year’s Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Missouri .

Team HPD ranks Among Top Fundraisers for Polar Plunge

Hazelwood police officers (Team HPD) joined students from Hazelwood West High School (Team HWHS) for this year’s 7th Annual Polar Plunge, a fund-raising

event for Special Olympics Missouri, on Saturday, February 23, at Creve Coeur Lake. They were among 662 people who were brave enough to withstand cold winter conditions and take a dip in 38° water like polar bears.

Team HPD was the second highest fundraising team for the event. One team member, Patrolman Dan Bridges, ended up as the top fundraiser by collecting $4,000. Two other team members, Christine Lewis and Lara Hall, raised $450 and $405 respectively.

Sponsored by Shop ‘n Save and WIL 92.3 FM, this year’s event was hosted by the Hazelwood and Maryland Heights Police Departments with support from the Pattonville Fire Department. All participants were required to raise a minimum of $75 in order to take a dip in the icy cold water. This event raised $105,798 to benefit Special Olympics Missouri.

The HPD recently joined other law enforcement agencies across the state for a Click It or Ticket enforcement mobilization, Feb. 18-22. The purpose was to get more motorists to buckle up – and save more lives.

During this period, HPD officers issued more than 116 traffic citations for the following violations: 53 seat belt tickets; 3 child restraint seat tickets; 31 speeding tickets; and 29 other moving and non-moving violations. Despite evidence proving the benefits of wearing a seat belt, nearly 1 in 4 Missouri motorists still aren’t making it click. Seven out of ten Missourians killed in traffic accidents are found with unbuckled seat belts.

“A seat belt is the best protection for a driver and all other vehicle occupants if an accident occurs,” stated Gregg Hall, Chief of Police. “We will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to buckle up and arrive alive.”

The HPD also plans to crackdown on intoxicated drivers by setting up several DWI checkpoints at different places within the city limits. Dates for these events will be announced soon and chosen based on DWI crime-related activities and accidents. Check the police department’s website at www.hazelwoodpd.org for future announcements. The goal is to send a strong message, “If you drink and drive, you lose.”

Outback Steakhouse giving back to Police benevolent AssociationYou can enjoy the delectable Down Under cuisine at Outback Steakhouse and still support a worthy cause in the process. In conjunction

with the company’s “Give Back with Outback” cause-related marketing campaign, the Hazelwood Outback Steakhouse is offering a Hazelwood Police Department Association Give Back Night on Tuesday, April 23, from 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

In order to participate, you need to download and print the “Give Back with Outback” flyer from the police department’s new website, www.hazelwoodpd.org, or contact Sgt. Andy Eagan at (314) 513-5208 to get one. Then bring it with you to the restaurant on April 23 and present it to your waiter/waitress. The restaurant will proudly donate 15% of your total check to the Hazelwood Police Benevolent Association.

Founded in 1995, the Hazelwood Police Benevolent Association is a non-profit organization that provides benefits and financial relief to officers of the department that become ill, injured or disabled. It also provides financial support to victims of crime in our community. During the holidays, the organization helps several needy families by donating food and gifts.

Keep Kids Safe From Lawn Mower Injuries

During lawn-mowing season, the Hazelwood Fire Department urges parents to exercise caution when using power lawn mower equipment. Every year, hospitals treat thousands of children who have been seriously injured by accidents involving the use of a lawn mower. Injuries range from a loss of fingers, arm or leg to a projectile hitting the eye.

“With children, we know accidents are bound to occur. It’s unfortunate that in nearly every situation, the mishap could have been prevented if the parents had just taken a little more precaution,” said Battalion Chief Randy Getz.

Here are some helpful tips to make this year’s lawn-mowing season a safe one for your family:

• Keep small children and pets far away from power lawn mowers.

• Make sure all guards and shields are in place before mowing.

• Wear safety goggles, long pants and quality shoes. Avoid operating a mower while barefoot or wearing sandals.

• Use only a mower with an automatic blade cut-off on the handle.

• Never reach underneath a mower while it’s still operating. Disconnect the wire to the spark plug and make sure the blade isn’t spinning before removing any debris underneath.

• Passengers should never be allowed on a riding mower. There are no exceptions!

• When operating a riding mower, do not ride sideways on a steep slope.

• Only allow older children who can push the equipment effortlessly and follow safety rules to operate a lawn mower.

Hazelwood firefighters observed earthquake drills at two public elementary schools, McNair and Russell, as part of the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut held on February 7 at 10:15 a.m. These students were among an estimated 2.9 million people in nine different states who participated in this event, making it the largest earthquake drill ever.

Both crews helped teach kids the “Drop, Cover and Hold On” technique and observe classrooms doing the drill.

“The reason why we participate in this annual emergency preparedness event is to help educate our residents on how to survive and recover from a big earthquake,” said Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Radel. “When an earthquake occurs, people only have seconds to protect themselves before the strong shaking knocks them down or something falls on them. Practice doing the ‘Drop, Cover and Hold On’ technique each year helps them to be ready to respond and react quickly.”

The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is held on February 7 because it’s the anniversary date of the massive New Madrid earthquake that struck the Midwest in 1812. Scientists estimate there is a 25-40% probability of a damaging earthquake occurring in the Central U.S. within a 50-year window of time.

The fire and police departments need your help in locating you during a fire or medical emergency. Please have your house and business numbers clearly posted. It is imperative that your numerical address be visible from the street so that you can be reached in a timely manner.

A City ordinance requires that numerical addresses for each building be posted at a location readily visible from the roadway. The ordinance reads, “All buildings shall be clearly marked with their numerical address. Minimum height of numbers shall be four (4) inches, and the numbers shall be placed a minimum of three (3) feet from the ground at such location on the building or property so as to be clearly visible from the street or thoroughfare adjacent to the subject property.”
