The Island of Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean Sea, some 93 km south of Sicily. Only thethree largest islands Malta Island (Malta), Gozo (Għawdex),and Comino (Kemmuna) are inhabited. Numerous baysalong the indented coastline of the islands provide goodharbours while the landscape is characterized by low hillswith terraced elds.

But Malta is not just sun: historical Malta oers unique megalithic temples, fortied cities and other monuments.Valletta, the capital of Malta, has been listed as a UNESCOworld heritage site due to the various monumentalbuildings. It is a baroque city which has often beendescribed as an open-air museum due to the amount ofhistoric buildings. As a consequence of the strong historicand cultural links to Britain, Malta is bilingual. The greatmajority of the Maltese can communicate in English.

There are various places of interest that you can visit in Malta, and the good thing is that all places are easilyreached by public transport via Valletta.

There are also plenty of dierent events around the island, especially during the summer months. One of the mostspectacular ones is the Malta Fireworks Festival in Valettain the end of April every year. For three days dierentcountries and rework suppliers compete in making thebest rework-show.

Don't be sad if you miss the Firework Festival. Almost every weekend, the dierent villages hosts religiousFestas. During a whole week, they celebrate their saintwith church bells, processions, confetti and in the weekendthey end the folk festival with an outstandingrework-show.

Valletta - The capital of Malta

Valletta, the capital of Malta, was built by the Knights of StJohn in the 16th-century. It has been listed as a UNESCOworld heritage site due to the various monumentalbuildings. It is a baroque city which has often beendescribed as an open-air museum due to the amount ofhistoric buildings concentrated in the area such as StJohn’s Co-Cathedral and the Grand Harbour, all built by theKnights as well as over 25 churches all concentrated inan area of 900m x 630m.

Mdina

Mdina, the old capital of Malta, is a typical medieval town situated on one of the highest hills of the island. The“Silent City,” as it is known, commands a magnicent viewof the island. It is one of the few remaining Renaissancefortied cities in Europe.

Megalithic Temples

The remains of numerous temples erected in the Fourth and Third Millennium B.C. are unique in the world. Stoneidols, animal representations carved in relief, stone tablets,altars and screens decorated with spirals and otherpatterns enhance the attraction of these magnicentsanctuaries. Hastings Garden

Just outside the city gate of Valletta this public garden is located. From here you have views over Sliema, Florianaand Manoel Island. The name of the garden comes fromMarquis of Hastings, who was a governor of Malta. He diedin 1827 and is buried in the garden.

Manoel Theatre

This beautiful theater, a contribution to Malta's cultural scene, from 1732 is well worth a visit. António Manoel deVilhena, the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta,personally paid for this to be built and it was incredibleconstructed in only ten months. Fort Rinella

This fort was built by the British to support Malta from Italian navy. To make it extra safe, a 100 ton gun, designedto be the worlds biggest, was placed at its entry.Fortunately it never had to be used but it is still there forvisitors to watch. Limestone Heritage

It is said that the name Malta comes from the Italian word Melita that means honey. It’s lovely to go swimming in Malta as Malta’s beaches are predominantly safe and super immaculate. One can ndnice beaches both in the south and in the north of Malta,so wherever you’re staying a nice beach is just fewminutes away.

Bugibba

Here the shore is rocky, but that has not barred the resorts’ appeal. The at rocks provide places forsunbathing and there are access points every so often forswimmers. The water is deep, but safe for bathing.

Blue Lagoon

This small beach is located on Comino and to get here youeither must have your own boat or booking one of themany boat trips going here or around the islands. Thesandy beach is really tiny so most people bathe from theirboats. The water is crystal clear and it is a perfect placefor snorkeling.

Sliema is another good destination to go shopping and here, at the Plaza Shopping Centre, you’ll nd the largestshopping centre in Malta. Shops are open from 09.00 till13.00 in the afternoon, and then open again at 16.00 till19.00.

If you are looking for something particularly Maltese, the Ta’ Qali Crafts Village is the place to go. Amongst othersouvenirs, Malta has several glass producers. Craftsmenand women can be seen busy at work throughout themany ’huts’ at the Ta’ Qali. At Ta’ Qali one can also ndlace, pottery, silver ligree jewelry, ironwork, woodwork andleatherwork. Prices are reasonable, but look out forbargain ’seconds’ in the glassware - some products aregreatly reduced in price for very minor blemishes. Some ofthese products can also be found in areas popular withtourists such as Bugibba, Sliema and Valletta.
