The WSMTA state conference al-ways comes at a time when I’m ready to cut my students loose and head for the chaise longue with my People magazine and cute pink “Shopahol-ic” novels. For a few years, I’d tear myself away from the patio and carpool with other South King County chap-ter members for a one-day conference experience whenever it was on the west side of the state. When the con-ference was in Walla Walla, I even went for one day during a visit with my in-laws in Pendleton. But I never signed up for the whole conference until I had the task of arranging the Outstanding Washington Winners re-cital in Bellingham 5 years ago. The next year at Gonzaga, I had the same job, so I registered for the whole week again. That’s the year I had the pleasure of meeting my dorm neighbor and permanent conference pal, Elaine Fox from Tri-Cities Chap-ter (now she’s in Moses Lake). My absolute dream conference was at Ocean Shores (THE BEACH!!) in 2006 - my whole family went for the week. I was pretty occupied organizing the Honors Recitals, but I’ll never forget super-fit Mona Beach on her bicycle,

or the deer family who passed by our window every day! Last year’s con-ference at WSU was a great experi-ence all the way around, and room-ing with my friend Kaycee Groom was a lot of fun! This year I’ve been in on the con-ference details for months now. Claire Marshall and Gary Hind have a fantastic schedule lined up for us! I’ll pack my People magazine and pink novel, but not sure I’ll crack ‘em open until June 28th.

Conference 2008 70th Birthday Tribute to

    Frederic Rzewski

    Jeffrey Gilliam with the composer

    “Frederic—WHO?” A 70th birthday lecture-recital tribute to

    the great American composer-pianist.

Composer Frederic Rzewski (pro-nounced zheff-skee), who turns 70 in 2008, has been described by Nicholas Slonimsky in his Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1993): "He is furthermore a granitically over-powering piano technician, capable of depositing huge boulders of sonor-istic material across the keyboard without actually wrecking the instru-ment." Rzewski has been recognized as one of the leading American compos-ers of piano music for more than 30 years. For me, knowing Rzewski over the past 15 years has been the closest experience I could have in this lifetime to knowing Beethoven. Like Beethoven, Rzewski is equally ingen-ious in both composition and in free improvisation, and indeed Rzewski has sought to revive the discarded practice of improvisation into many of his piano works. In some of his works Rzewski intentionally blurs the line between notated music that sounds like improvisation, and free improvisation itself. In keeping with the humanitarian spirit of Beethoven, many of his works touch on secular and political themes. The presenta-tion will be filled with anecdotes about what it means to know and befriend one of America’s greatest living pianist-composers.

Famous Advice Columnist at the Conference

Make plans now to attend the con-ference in Bremerton. On Tuesday, June 24 the famous advice columnist, Certa Faye Cation and her cousin, Mota Vator will be answering ques-tions about the certification process. Certa Faye will be responding to let-ters from teachers who are interested in certification. If you are your chap-ter’s certification chair or you are a teacher who is thinking about becom-ing certified or a potential mentor teacher, you won’t want to miss this session! Or just come to be entertain-ed! At the January 2008 meeting, the WSMTA Board of Directors voted to reimburse one half ($100) of the Cert-ification Application Fee for the first five teachers who apply. Documen-tation of submitting an approved cer-tification application and fee must be sent to the WSMTA Certification Chair before reimbursement is made. As of this writing April 1, there are 2 grants left. Congratulations to the following teachers who have qualified for a grant:

    PEDAL POINTS

The Icing on the Cake In the last issue of the CLARION, I wrote about preparing a hymn for singing. One of the most important things we can pass on to our students is the importance of preparing well. We must also convey to our students that, when playing in public, it is far more important to play a simple piece well than to play a difficult piece poorly. A congregation does not care how difficult the music is, but they will care if it sounds bad. I cannot stress enough the impor-tance of preparing the basic hymn. No one in the congregation will care how fancy the descant is if the hymn is difficult to sing. In my experience, most complaints received in church music deal with hymns—not with prelude, postlude, offertory, or even the choir anthem--the complaints come because of the hymns. If peo-ple complain about a new hymn, or even an old one, it is generally be-cause they feel uncomfortable when singing it. It is the organist’s respon-sibility to prepare the hymns so thor-oughly that even an unfamiliar hymn is easy to sing. Only after the details of phrasing, breathing, and matching the text to the music have been worked out can creativity enter the picture. Here are some ideas for you to use with your students to add another dimension, but not overpower, a well-prepared hymn. As always, listen carefully. The point of this is to enhance the hymn, not distract the singers.

    1. Work out the bass line and play it in the pedals. A lot of pedal tech-nique can be learned this way. If the pedal line is interesting, add a reed stop to it, but listen carefully. The reed should enhance the sound of the moving pedal line without overpowering the rest of the hymn.

    2. Alter the registration on each stanza. It is a nice touch to match the registration to the text. Practice changing registration so there are no awkward pauses.

    3. If the tenor line is interesting, play the bass in the pedals, the alto and soprano with the right hand, and solo the tenor line an octave higher on a different manual using

  • The CLARION – May, 2008 - Page 5

    a solo stop. Presto--an instant des-cant!

    4. Play the melody in the right hand, the alto and tenor in the left hand, and the bass in the pedals. Practice this a lot before attempting it with a congregation. This is not as easy as it appears.

    5. A nice change that reinforces the melody for the men is to play the hymn as in number 4 above, but lower the melody one octave, and add a strong stop (a reed, for instance) to the melody. Play the alto and tenor part in its usual regi-ster with a quieter set of stops on another manual.

    6. If playing for a denomination that is accustomed to a key change, take the time to work out a few connecting bars and be able to play the hymn securely in the new key. The last thing a congregation needs is for the hymn to fall apart as the organist attempts to ‘bring it one step closer to the Lord.’

    7. If the congregation knows a hymn very well, consider letting them sing it a cappella. If you have a choir, warn them ahead of time so they can be prepared to lead. If not, start a stanza, and gradually reduce stops until the congregation finishes the stanza on its own. This is especially effective for who already sing well.

It took me years to realize how important a hymn is to the average congregation. Like most organists, I preferred spending my time learning and performing great organ litera-ture. The average congregation, how -ever, does not really listen to the prelude or the postlude-- they pay attention to the hymns. Careful pre-paration of the hymns yields happier congregations and a better work en-vironment for the organist. Intimate knowledge of hymns helps an organ-ist when preparing everything from Bach’s many chorale settings to the newer organ literature based on hymn tunes. Learning to enhance hymns is a springboard to further im-provisation, aids in developing tech-nique, and is a medium for experi-mentation with different registra-tions. But most of all, playing with the hymns is fun! Enjoy baking (prepar-ing the basic hymn) and icing (embel-

lishing) the hymns you play every week.
