Australian Inventions Early Gold CoastSettlers1838 Pre-paid postage - Colonial Postmaster-General of New South Wales, James Raymond introduced the world's first pre-paid postal system. 1843 Grain stripper - John Ridley and John Bull of South Australia developed the world's first grain stripper that cut the crop then removed and placed the grain into bins. 1856 Refrigerator - Using the principal of vapour compression, James Harrison produced the world's first practical refrigerator. He was commissioned by a brewery to build a machine that cooled beer.1858 Football - In 1858 Tom Will and Henry Harrison wrote the first ten rules of Football, thus becoming the first people in the world to codify a kicking-ball game. These rules predate those of Rugby, Soccer and Gridiron. Football may have been inspired by the Aboriginal jumping/kicking game of Marn Grook. 1874 The underwater torpedo - Invented by Louis Brennan, the torpedo had two propellers, rotated by wires which were attached to winding engines on the shore station. By varying the speed at which the two wires were extracted, the torpedo could be steered to the left or right by an operator on the shore. 1876 Stump jump plough- Robert and Clarence Bowyer Smith developed a plough which could jump over stumps and stones, enabling newly-cleared land to be cultivated. 1885 Telpahane - The forerunner of the television. It was invented by Henry Sutton in Ballarat.

The Gold Coast Hinterland's supply of cedar began drawing timber cutters to the region in large numbers in the mid 1800s and in 1865 the inland township of Nerang (named after the local aboriginal word neerang, meaning 'shovel nosed shark') was surveyed and established as a base for the industry. The surrounding valleys and plains were quickly developed as cattle, sugar and cotton farms and by 1869 settlement had reached the mouth of the Nerang River on the Southern edge of Moreton Bay. The township of Southport was surveyed in 1875 in a location known as Nerang Creek Heads. In 1885 Queensland Governor Musgrave built a holiday home on a hill just north of Southport and the surrounding coastal area began to get a reputation as a resort for Brisbane's wealthy and influential. The rough bush tracks and numerous creek crossings between Brisbane and Southport made it difficult to reach without a boat, but in 1889 a railway line was extended to the town and numerous guesthouses and hotels were soon established up and down the coastline

The Heart Start Fitness Story. Heart Start Fitness has been successfully training clients for 5 years on the Gold Coast. The Heart Start Fitness story really began over 20 years ago in a small church hall in Ballarat in regional Victoria. It all began in 1987, when I started my Martial Arts training in the Japanese Art of Ninjutsu, and after 10 years I achieved my black belt. I then began to look for another challenge and found Zen Do Kai Freestyle Karate with the Bob Jones Corporation at the Ballarat Academy of Martial Arts. The Academy also offered the national sport of Thailand, Muay Thai; it was after achieving my 2nd Black belt this time in Zen Do Kai I decided to give this relatively new sport of Mauy Thai a try. It was after a few classes that I decided that this was the path I wanted to go down. After training 5 days a week for nearly 2 years I attained the converted 2 nd degree black singlet (The Bob Jones Corporation grading system). I then began to train the first of my amateur fighters. After a successful period I decided that it was my turn to get into the Mauy Thai boxing ring. It was after watching a DVD of Aussie World Champion “John” Wayne Parr that I decided that Queensland and the Boonchu Gym was the place to be. So in 2001 I made the move to the Gold Coast to train and fight out of the Boonchu Gym with “John” Wayne. In 2004, after completing my International Personal Trainers qualification I star ted Heart Start Fitness. My goal is to help people achieve their fitness goals through quality Muay Thai training in a relaxed one on one environment. So if you’re looking for Personal Training with a difference, contact Marcus on 0405172498.

Predictions from 100 years ago

The Ladys Home Journal December 1900

The American will be taller by one to two inches. His increase or stature will result from better health, due to vast reforms in medicine, sanitation, food and athletics. He will live fifty years instead or thirty-five as at present-for he will reside in the suburbs. The city house will practically be no more. Building in blocks will be illegal. The trip from suburban home to office will require a few minutes only. A penny will pay the fair.

Automobiles will be cheaper than horses today. Farmers will own automobile hay-wagons, automobile truck-wagons, plows, harrows and hay rakes. A one pound motor in one of these vehicles will do the work of a pair of horses or more. Children will ride in automobile sleighs in winter. Automobiles will have substituted for every horse vehicle now known know. There will be as already exists today, automobile hearses, automobile police patrols, automobile ambulances, automobile street sweepers. The horse will be as scarce, if, indeed, not even scarcer, than the yoked ox is today.

Photographs will be telegraphed from any distance. If there be a battle in China a hundred years hence snapshots of the most striking events will be published in the newspapers an hour later. Even today photographs are being telegraphed over short distances. Photographs will reproduce all of Nature’s colours.

Telephones around the world. Wireless telephone and telegraph circuits will span the world. A husband in the middle of the Atlantic will be able to converse with his wife in Chicago. We will be able to telephone to China quite as readily as we now talk from New York to Brooklyn. By an automatic signal they will connect with any signal in their locality with out the intervention of the “hello girl”.

Early Settlers 100 Years AgoThe northern coast of Australia was first seen by Dutch navigator Willem van Colster as early as 1623, but it was the last region to be settled by Europeans, who struggled to survive topical diseases, unpredictable weather and attacks by Aborigines.

Four attempts were made to found settlements in the 1800s, but all were quickly abandoned. Many factors contributed to the failure of the early settlements, including their isolation and the fact that there were not any established trading routes. Hot, humid weather and frequent storms and cyclones, along with poor soil and plagues of insects, destroyed crops.

Tropical diseases carried by the abundant mosquitoes also killed many of the settlers. Those that survived the diseases were under threat from Aborigines and from the large crocodiles that patrolled the waterways.

Northern Territory - A trading base.

It was always a matter of considerable pride when an Australian product is well received back in the mother country, so local gourmets will be happy, if perhaps a little surprised, to learn of this nation’s latest export victory.

All the best city restaurants and cafes in London have been enjoying great success with a new addition to their menus, “Jugged Wallaby”. the name alone of the novel dish has aroused the curiosity of the discerning London diner, and apparently he is not being disappointed by the fare.

There is no sign of the demand for the meat slackening off and it was reported today that a consignment of 3,000 frozen wallabies had arrived from Australia in good condition and ready for the city’s kitchens.

British gourmets hop into Wallaby
