It is with pleasure and pride that we welcome members of the American Society of University Composers to the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati. The 16th Annual National Festival/Conference is a wonderful opportunity for us to present our diverse and excellent performing organizations in performances of contemporary American music representative of all styles and all geographical areas of the country. This event brings to fruition nearly two and a half years of planning. The 26 events scheduled during the five days of the conference include 11 concerts, lecture I demonstrations, panel discussions, meetings, and paper presentations.

The heart of the festival is the performance of recent compositions by 68 composers. These works were selected from over 1100 submitted. The selection process took place over a six-month period beginning in the late spring of 1980. A committee of composition and performance faculty members from the College-Conservatory of Music carefully studied all compositions. Several scores were returned to over and over again. By the early fall the committee had narrowed down the list to about 200 scores- all of which we would have liked to perform. The second stage in the selection process was careful consultation with participating conductors and faculty soloists. The committee felt it necessary to give performers considerable latitude in choosing what to program. Programs were finally set by December. The factors that affected selection included: feasibility of the music for each performing group, wide stylistic diversity, mixture of well known and infrequently performed composers, wide geographic distribution of composers, how often the composer was previously represented on ASUC festivals, and educational needs of student ensembles. Because of the involvement of the larger performing groups at CCM- two orchestras, three choruses, opera, symphonic band, wind ensemble, brass choir- we were able to schedule only a tiny fraction of the enormous number of chamber music submissions.

We wish to make every effort to make our visitors' stay in Cincinnati pleasant and free of problems.

Welcome to Cincinnati!
