A little about DECThe Downtown Education Collaborative (DEC) was createdin 2008 and is a partnership of the Colleges of the Androscoggin and communityorganizations (Andover College, Bates College, Central Maine Community College,Lewiston Adult Education, Lewiston Public Library, and the University of SouthernMaine Lewiston-Auburn). DEC provides an opportunity for these colleges andorganizations to come together, share ideas, and pool resources to createinnovative new projects in Lewiston/Auburn. This guide, compiled by students fromall four colleges and two AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers, is only one DEC project;others include computer labs for adults and a daily homework help program at thelibrary. You are welcome to stop by the office (219 Lisbon Street) at any time formore information or to get involved!

A little about youAll of the college students in Lewiston-Auburn have adifferent relationship with the cities. Some of you grew up here, and some traveledhere from places around the world. Unfortunately, many students commute straightfrom home to school, or seldom leave their campuses during their time in Lewiston-Auburn. In many cases, students do not get to enjoy all that the cities have to offer!

This guide is your invitation to visit the shops, explore the parks, and participate inthe events happening all around you in Lewiston and Auburn.

A little about the citiesLewiston and Auburn have rich histories asprosperous mill cities and regional centers of business and culture. They have

provided opportunities for a fresh start and hard work for people of many culturesand backgrounds, including a sizeable Franco-American community and, morerecently, East African refugee communities. Lewiston-Auburn is currently home toabout 60,000 people, as well as hundreds of businesses, organizations, publicspaces and events. Check it out!
