The Color of a Diamond

Diamond color can be ranked on an alphabetical scale that range from D-Z. The diamonds graded D is considered to have a “colorless” look and can only be found in the rarest of stones. After colorless, the grading moves on to nearly colorless, faint yellow, and light yellow ending with Z on the scale. A diamonds brilliance is shown on the amount of light that is reflects through the stone. If the diamond is clear, then it will reflect “rainbow-like” colors through the stone. Near Colorless: G-J falls under this type of grading on the scale. Slight traces of color are shown, but these diamonds are still suitable for a platinum/white gold setting.

Faint Color: K-M are set in a yellow gold setting and possess traces of color. Do to the slight color; a K diamond can be purchased for half of the price of what a G diamond is valued. Saving some money and still getting a great diamond, the faint color grading can be of good use.

Very Light Color: N-R is next on the scale as it shows a yellow and/or brown tint. These type of diamonds show color but can also be less expensive than higher grades.

Light Color: S-Z has too much color for a white diamond. Usually these types of diamonds must be custom ordered when looking to purchase one with such color.
