The Communal Complaint

Text: Lamentations 5:1-22, 1. Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. 2. Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners. 3. We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows. 4. We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. 5. Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. 6. We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. 7. Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. 8. Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. 9. We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. 10. Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. 11. Women have been ravished in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. 12. Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. 13. Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. 14. The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. 15. Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.

16. The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! 17. Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim 18. for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it. 19. You, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. 20. Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long? 21. Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old 22. unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure. (NIV) Introduction: I. Chapter 5 does not follow the acrostic pattern of chapters 1-4, but it does consist of twenty-two (22) verses characteristic also of chapters 1, 2 and 4. (See Willis.) II. Coffman observed that this chapter is not primarily a dirge, but a national prayer on behalf of the beleaguered people of God. III. Smith observed that Lamentations 5 differs from the previous four (4) in three (3) major respects; viz.,

A. This chapter is not an acrostic. B. Whereas the stanzas in chapters 1-3 had three (3) lines each, and those in chapter 4 had two (2) lines each, the stanzas in chapter 5 have only one (1) line. C. This fifth (5th) poem is a prayer, not a dirge.

IV. Smith wrote that this chapter has two (2) major sections addressed to:

A. the reproach of Zion. B. the request for the restoration of Zion.

VI. Clarke describes this chapter as “a solemn prayer of all the people, stating their past and present sufferings, and praying for God’s mercy.” Commentary:

Insult Upon Insult Has Been Heaped Upon Jerusalem

(Verses 5:1-18) Lamentations 5:1, Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. (NIV) I. Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.

A. Judah and Jerusalem ask God to remember which reminds us of:

1. Exodus 2:23-25, During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. (NIV)

2. Genesis 9:15-16, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth." (NIV) 3. Leviticus 26:42, I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. (NIV) 4. 1 Samuel 1:11, 19, And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head." Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. (NIV) 5. 2 Kings 20:3, "Remember, O LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. (NIV) 6. Psalm 98:3, He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. (NIV)

7. Psalm 105:8, He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, (NIV) 8. Psalm 106:45, for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented. (NIV) 9. Psalm 111:5, He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever. (NIV) 10. Psalm 136:23, to the One who remembered us in our low estate His love endures forever. (NIV) 11. Jeremiah 14:21, For the sake of your name do not despise us; do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember your covenant with us and do not break it. (NIV) 12. 2 Kings 19:19, Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God." (NIV)

B. To remember is to act (intervene) on behalf of Judah and Jerusalem as he had done in the past. (See Willis.)

1. God is asked for compassion. 2. God is asked to be merciful to a suffering nation. (See Coffman.)

C. “Behold our reproach” can be translated “Look down on us with commiseration.” (Clarke)

Lamentations 5:2, Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners. (NIV) I. Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners.

A. Regarding Israel’s inheritance, see:

1. Deuteronomy 4:21, The LORD was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance. (NIV) 2. Deuteronomy 19:10, Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed. (NIV) 3. Deuteronomy 20:16, However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. (NIV) 4. Deuteronomy 21:23, you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. (NIV) 5. Deuteronomy 24:4, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the

eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. (NIV) 6. Deuteronomy 25:19, When the LORD your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget! (NIV) 7. Deuteronomy 26:1, When you have entered the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, (NIV) 8. 1 Kings 8:36, then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance. (NIV) 9. Jeremiah 3:18, In those days the house of Judah will join the house of Israel, and together they will come from a northern land to the land I gave your forefathers as an inheritance. (NIV)

B. Because of their sins, Israel has lost its inheritance.

1. Deuteronomy 28:43-44, The alien who lives among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him. He will be the head, but you will be the tail. (NIV)

C. Coffman observed that verses 2-19 describe the stark ugliness, injustice, greed and sadistic cruelty of the terrible captivity they were experiencing. D. Clarke wrote, “The greater part of the Jews were either slain or carried away captive; and even those who were left . . were not free, for they were vassals to the Chaldeans.” E. “Our inheritance” refers to the land that had been “given” to Abraham (The Pulpit Commentary) and “inherited” by Israel.

1. Genesis 13:14-15, The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. (NIV) 2. Genesis 17:8, The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God." (NIV) 3. The land had been seized by the Babylonians and the houses of the people were destroyed. (See The Pulpit Commentary.)

a. Jeremiah 52:12-13, On the tenth day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard, who served the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. He set fire to the temple of the LORD, the royal palace and all the houses of

Jerusalem. Every important building he burned down. (NIV)

Lamentations 5:3, We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows. (NIV) I. “We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows.”

A. Coffman wrote that the condition of the poorest people of the land who had been left behind by the Chaldean conquerors is here described.

1. “The people were not allowed any rest, for they were essentially slaves,” Coffman wrote.

B. The people were left without leadership and governmental protection like “orphans”, as it were, and mothers became as if they were widows in a similar figure.

1. By the casualties of war, many children had literally become orphans and wives widows.

C. Judah regarded itself as among the world’s most desolate, like orphans and widows in a hostile world. (Targum, The Pulpit Commentary.)

Lamentations 5:4, We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. (NIV) I. We are forced to buy basic essentials such as drinking water and wood which is obtainable only at a high price.

A. Israel had been reduced to dependency on others for the basic essentials of life. (See Willis.)

1. Numbers 20:19, The Israelites replied: "We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else." (NIV) 2. Deuteronomy 2:6, 28, You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.' " Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot- (NIV) 3. Joshua 9:23, 27, You are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God." That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the community and for the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day. (NIV) 4. Deuteronomy 3:20, until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they too have taken over the land that the LORD your God is giving them, across the Jordan. After that, each of you may go back to the possession I have given you." (NIV) 5. Joshua 1:13, "Remember the command that Mo-ses the servant of the LORD gave you: 'The LORD your God is giving you rest and has granted you this land.' (NIV) 6. Deuteronomy 15:6, But if your servant says to you, "I do not want to leave you," because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, (NIV)

7. Deuteronomy 28:12, The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. (NIV)

B. Clarke wrote, “They were so lowly reduced by servitude, that they were obliged to pay dearly for those things which were” (once free).

Lamentations 5:5, Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. (NIV) I. Those who pursue us are at our very heels; we are weary and can find no rest.

A. Constant harassment was a daily burden.

1. They were continually hounded by their enemies. 2. “We are driven to our work like the bullock, which has a yoke upon his neck,” Clarke wrote.

B. “The harassing conduct of the Babylonian conquerors is compared to the pursuit of a foe fast gaining upon a fugitive.” (The Pulpit Commentary)

Lamentations 5:6, We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. (NIV) I. We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread to keep from starving.

A. Coffman observed that some of Judah’s people were under the total control of Assyria while others were under the domination of Egypt where they had gone in hope of help.

B. They labored for the basic necessities of life and took it wherever they could get it. C. “Starvation awaited the Jews unless they submited to one or the other of their hereditary foes.” (The Pulpit Commentary)

1. Some escaped to Egypt and surrender to the Egyptians. (The Pulpit Commentary)

a. Jeremiah 50:15, Shout against her on every side! She surrenders, her towers fall, her walls are torn down. Since this is the vengeance of the LORD, take vengeance on her; do to her as she has done to others. (NIV)

2. The majority submited to the Chaldeans, Babylonians. (The Pulpit Commentary)

Lamentations 5:7, Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. (NIV) I. Our fathers sinned and died and we are left to bear the punishment for their wickedness.

A. Willis points out that the people of Judah and Jerusalem are still in a state of denial.

1. They still hold the idea that what has happened is not their fault. 2. They claim their ancestors sinned and they are suffering for the evils of others.

3. It is often very difficult to see our own faults for what they are.

a. Jeremiah 31:27-30, "The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will plant the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the offspring of men and of animals. Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant," declares the LORD. "In those days people will no longer say, 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.' Instead, everyone will die for his own sin; whoever eats sour grapes—his own teeth will be set on edge. (NIV) b. Ezekiel 18:1-2, The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? (NIV) c. It is often very difficult to accept responsibility for our own actions. (See Willis.)

B. The punishment for the sins of past governmental administrations was visited on that living generation.

1. Ezekiel 18:1-32, The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in

Israel. For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son—both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. "Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right. He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife or lie with a woman during her period. He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked. He does not lend at usury or take excessive interest. He withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between man and man. He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD. "Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things (though the father has done none of them): "He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbor's wife. He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things. He lends at usury and takes excessive interest. Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he will surely be put to death and his blood will be on his own head. "But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things: "He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife. He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked. takes no usury or excessive interest. He keeps my laws and follows my decrees. He will not die for his father's sin; he will surely live. But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people. "Yet you ask, 'Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?' Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live. The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him. "But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die. None of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him. Because of the righteous things he has done, he will live. Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? "But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die. "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear, O house of Israel: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die. But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he

has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life. Because he considers all the offenses he has committed and turns away from them, he will surely live; he will not die. Yet the house of Israel says, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? "Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live! (NIV)

2. Exodus 20:5, You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, (NIV) 3. Exodus 34:7, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. 5. Jeremiah 32:18, You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the laps of their children after them. O great and powerful God, whose name is the LORD Almighty, (NIV) 6. Job 21:19, It is said, 'God stores up a man's punishment for his sons.' Let him repay the man himself, so that he will know it! (NIV) 7. Jeremiah 31:30, Instead, everyone will die for his own sin; whoever eats sour grapes—his own teeth will be set on edge. (NIV) 8. Ezekiel 18:1-2, The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: " 'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'? (NIV) 9. Jeremiah 16:11-12, then say to them, 'It is because your fathers forsook me,' declares the LORD, 'and followed other gods and served and worshiped them. They forsook me and did not keep my law. But you have behaved more wickedly than your fathers. See how each of you is following the stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying me. (NIV) 10. The above scriptures are reconciled by the fact that Jews were punished for their own sins and the sins of their fathers. (The Pulpit Commentary)

Lamentations 5:8, Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. (NIV) I. Slaves rule over us. There is no one to free us from their rule.

1. 1 Samuel 31:8-13, The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people. They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan. When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard of what the Philistines had done to Saul, all their valiant men journeyed through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned them. Then they took their bones and buried them under a tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted seven days. (NIV) 2. “Impalement after death was common punishment with the Assyrians and Babylonians,” The Pulpit Commentary states.

C. Smith wrote, “Princes had been impaled and left to die a slow and shameful death.” D. “Elderly people received no compassionate considera-tion,” Smith wrote. E. “It is very probable that this was a species of punishment. They were suspended from hooks in the wall by their hands till they died through torture and exhaustion,” Clarke wrote.
