Tutorial

The CMAS center at the UNC at Chapel Hill, offers three hands-on training courses that

cover from emissions modeling to air quality modeling. The Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel

Emissions (SMOKE) modeling system is used as emission modeling tool to prepare

emissions input data for various models. For air quality modeling, the Community

Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system is chosen for this training. The CAMQ

modeling system combines current knowledge in atmospheric science and air quality

modeling with multi-processor computing techniques in an open-source framework to

deliver fast, technically sound estimates of ozone, particulates, toxics and acid

depositions.

A total of 5 days hands-on lab training courses are offered and the training materials are

designed specifically for the Asian users. The modeling domain for East Asia region and

emission data of Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-Phase B(INTEX-B) will

be used in the training. The training courses are consisted of SMOKE course (2 days),

Basic CMAQ course (2 days) and Advanced CMAQ course (1 day).

There is no specific prerequisite skill needed for these trainings but some basic UNIX

commands are preferable for running SMOKE and CMAQ models.

SMOKE Course: Bok H. Baek ([email protected]) and Zacharia Adelman ([email protected])

CMAQ Courses: Zachariah Adelman and Sarav Arunachalam ([email protected])

Since total number of trainee in each class is limited to 40 persons. The tutorial

registration will be closed if the number of tutorial registration is over 40.
