Remarks from the Director院长寄语

2015 witnessed another fruitful year for the UB Confucius Institute (UBCI).This yearbook should demonstrate that UBCI has provided great service to UB in the area of China Studies and to local school districts, and has made a positive difference in the lives of many students both on the UB campus and in the local community.

The Institute has accomplished numerous significant programs in the areas of Chinese language teaching and community cultural activities. On top of our continuing projects, UBCI established in 2015 two new Chinese programs in the Orchard Park School District and Akron Central Schools (now we have 11 programs in Western NY K-12 schools, and are teaching 3,639 K-12 students). We also have developed one new Confucius Classroom at City Honors School, significantly expanded the HSK and YCT programs, and hosted a remarkable performance by students and faculty of the Central Conservatory of Music, China’s top music conservatory, to name a few highlights.

More importantly, the Confucius Institute has further fulfilled its expanded mission of integrating itself into the mainstream of UB’s academic life. UBCI, working with the Graduate School of Education, has launched in fall 2015 a Master of Education and New York State Certification Program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. In 2015, we further contributed to the Confucius Reading Area, established a “Confucius Educator Award,” set up a Chinese Club with monthly presentations on Chinese culture, secured 16 scholarships from Hanban for participants in the UB Study Abroad in China program, organized and co-sponsored three academic conferences and seven UBCI Distinguished Lectures.

In June 2015, UBCI moved into a new office and classroom suite in the UB Commons. I would like to especially thank UB Vice Provost and UBCI Board Chair Professor Stephen Dunnett, who played an instrumental role in obtaining the new space for UBCI. I wish to thank my staff—UBCI Associate Directors Bruce Acker and Maggie Lu and student assistants Xiujiao Gao and Xinhui Zhan—for diligently and effectively carrying out so many valuable programs. Thanks are due to Hanban and our valuable partner Capital Normal University for their generous support, to the UBCI

Board of Advisors for their excellent advice and oversight, and to CAS Dean Bruce Pitman and Associate Dean Millie Chen for their great leadership in promoting the cause of UBCI. Finally, I am grateful to all the friends of UBCI for the inspiring and continuous support.

UB Launches Chinese Language Teacher Certification Program在UB建立教师资格证项目

The Confucius Institute and the UB Graduate School of Education are working hand-in-hand to prepare a strong corps of new Chinese language teachers.

UB took a major step forward in fall 2015 in launching a master’s degree and teacher certification program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. The program is jointly operated by the UB Graduate School of Education and The Confucius Institute. It offers three New York State certification tracks:

• Initial only certification• Initial/Professional certification• Professional certification

The Confucius Institute has arranged for a visiting professor, Professor Bo Yang, from its partner, Capital Normal University, to teach in the program beginning in January 2016.

In recognition of the impressive quality and growth of the school’s Chinese language program, Confucius Institute Headquarters designated City Honors School in Buffalo as a Confucius Classroom in August 2015.

Confucius Classrooms receive start-up funds and annual funding from Confucius Institute Headquarters to support Chinese language teaching. In addition to funding, Confucius Classrooms receive a China Exploratorium interactive technology center, annual contributions of cultural and instructional books supplied by Confucius Institute Headquarters, and opportunities to send students to China on subsidized study tours.

City Honors School joins Lewiston-Porter Central School District and Nichols School as recipients of the prestigious Confucius Classroom designation. Like City Honors, Lewiston-Porter is affiliated with the UB Confucius Institute, while the Nichols School Confucius Classroom is associated with the Asia Society.

UB Confucius Institute Expands Professional Development Program for Teachers组织教师职业发展的研讨活动

As the UB Graduate School of Education launched the Chinese language teaching master’s degree and certification program in 2015, the Confucius Institute significantly expanded its professional development efforts for teachers. In addition to two spring workshops for Confucius Institute guest teachers, the Confucius Institute sponsored two major events for regional teachers in fall 2015.

A day-long workshop on October 10 in 280 Park Hall featured keynote presentations by Dr. Chengzhi Chu, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese Language Program at the University of California, Davis, and Dr. Yongping Zhu, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Notre Dame. In the afternoon sessions, Confucius Institute teachers and local school administrators addressed the successes and challenges of teaching Chinese in U.S. schools.

Then on November 14, the UB Graduate School of Education and the Confucius Institute co-sponsored a symposium, “Language Transitions: Policy and Practice of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign/Second Language.” Organized by Dr. Janina Brutt Griffler, Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy and UBCI board member, the symposium focused on policy and practice of teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign/second or heritage language. A key question examined how educational systems should respond to the emerging importance of Chinese in today’s global workplaces.

Keynote speakers at this symposium included:• Jun Liu, then-Associate Provost for International Initiatives, Georgia State University • Kun-Shun Lee, Professor of the Practice, Duke University• Hongming Zhang, Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison

More than 100 people participated in the two events, including Confucius Institute guest teachers from UB and Alfred University, UB professors and graduate students, school administrators, and local Chinese teachers from public and private schools in the Buffalo area.

Confucius Institute Hosts Performance from Premier Music Conservatory in China接待来自国内顶尖音乐学府的表演团

Some of China’s most talented musicians performed for an enthusiastic audience in a concert in UB’s Lippes Concert Hall on October 3. The ensemble of faculty and graduate students from one of China’s premier music schools—the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM)—presented an impressive and broad repertoire of songs from China, Europe, and North and South America.

The Central Conservatory trains musicians at the highest levels to play and compose music in the Chinese tradition as well as music from around the globe, often creating an exciting fusion of Chinese and other music styles. The CCOM musicians were in North America on a Confucius Institute performance tour that included stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo, and Ann Arbor.

UB Confucius Institute Holds Mid-Autumn Festival/Confucius Day Celebration at UB孔院日、中秋庆祝活动

The second most important holiday in China after Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival occurs on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese calendar, which is the night of the full moon between early September and early October. It takes place around the same time as the birthday of Confucius, which is traditionally celebrated on September 28.

To celebrate both events, the Confucius Institute organized an open-air festival on a beautiful early-autumn Sunday on UB’s Student Union Field. The celebration on September 27 was part of a week-long series of Moon Festival/Confucius Day academic and cultural events.

People of all ages enjoyed calligraphy, music, food, language lessons, and a t-shirt design competition. In the Confucius Institute’s new offices in the adjacent UB Commons, attendees viewed an exhibition about the efforts of the Flying Tigers and China National Aviation Corporation in World War II. A second

Western New York Students Travel to Harbin with Chinese Bridge Summer Program

In July 2015, nine Western New York high school students traveled to Harbin and Beijing as part of the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp program sponsored and organized by Confucius Institute Headquarters. Oliver Derrah, a Chinese Bridge participant from Orchard Park High School, had this to say about his experience in China:

This summer I had the opportunity of a lifetime. I participated in the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for U.S. High School Students; it is an opportunity for students grade 9-12 to take a trip to China in order to experience the language and the culture.

At the beginning of the trip, we stayed at Beijing Royal School and were able to see many high-interest attractions including a Confucian temple and the Hanban Headquarters.

Then, we traveled to the Northeastern city of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, where we stayed at Harbin Engineering University. The dorms, the food, the campus, they were all amazing! There, we visited another Confucian temple, the largest in the world in fact. Other activities in Harbin included a traditional dance performance, calligraphy, paper-cutting, and Chinese harp workshops, a fish skin painting workshop, and even going with a local family for a day.

11

All members of the family were so friendly, especially their son, Wang Kaidi who spoke excellent English. They took me to a museum, his school, and a mall, all before returning to their apartment to make dumplings.

Also in Harbin the group was able to take several Chinese language classes, and eventually take the YCT Chinese test level 1 or 2, depending on the participant’s skill level.”

Program chaperone and St. Joe’s teacher Daniel Scanlon added, “From Confucius temples, the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square in Beijing, to the educational institutions, popular hang outs, the talent show and our host families in Harbin,

each of the participants was invited to participate in Chinese culture. Our Chinese hosts and friends were happy to teach us about multiple facets of their culture within a short period of time.”

Lewiston Porter Confucius Classroom hosts Nanjing Normal University Performance Tour孔子课堂接待南京师范大学表演团

On October 23, the UB Confucius Institute cosponsored two performances in the Lewiston Porter School District by a performing arts troupe from Nanjing Normal University. The morning concert for middle and high school students featured virtuosic performances on Chinese classical instruments, as well as traditional dances from China.

The afternoon session for elementary and intermediate grades was highly interactive. Performers asked students up on stage to try various traditional instruments and join them in a final dance, and gave the students opportunity to show off their knowledge of Chinese language.

The performance group from Nanjing was on a tour of the northeastern United States arranged by the Confucius Institute at Pace University. Designated as a “Confucius Classroom” by Confucius Institute Headquarters, the Lewiston Porter School district currently has three guest teachers who teach Chinese throughout the district.

Academic Programs at UBUB学术活动

Confucius Institute Symposium Honors Professor George C. Lee for Pioneering Work Developing UB Relationships in ChinaGeorge C. Lee UB中国关系学术研讨会

When George C. Lee, PhD, traveled to Beijing in spring 1980 as the new dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, he encountered a community of Chinese students and professors eager to engage in academic exchange with Americans. On that first trip, Professor Lee gave six 3-hour talks on the American educational system over three days to large and enthusiastic university audiences.

Lee represented UB in China at the request of President Robert L. Ketter soon after Premier Deng Xiaoping announced China’s “opening up” policy in 1978. On that first visit, Lee signed a historic exchange agreement with Beijing Polytechnic University, making UB the first U.S. university to establish formal ties in China following the normalization of U.S.-China relations in 1979. In 1981 President Ketter visited Beijing to sign a comprehensive educational exchange agreement with the Beijing Municipal System of Higher Education.

On May 5, the UB Confucius Institute and the Office of the Vice Provost for International Education co-sponsored a symposium honoring George Lee’s pioneering work in developing the UB-China relationship and presented him with the prestigious Confucius Educator Award.

In his talk at the symposium, Lee recalled the enthusiastic audiences for those first presentations at Beijing Polytechnic University (now Beijing University of Science and Technology). Many students wanted to study in the U.S., and soon UB, followed by other U.S. universities, was able to admit some of China’s most promising scholars into PhD programs in engineering and the natural sciences.

After that groundbreaking trip, Lee encouraged Stephen C. Dunnett, PhD, who as a young assistant professor had recently founded UB’s English Language Institute, to set up an English language center in Beijing.

Dunnett heeded Lee’s call, and in 1981 UB established the first American-run English language center in China on the campus of the Beijing Normal College of Foreign Languages. UB’s training center prepared the first wave of more than 100 young Chinese scholars for graduate study and training in Buffalo.

In presenting the Confucius Educator Award to Lee, UB Confucius Institute Director Jiyuan Yu said the award is presented to individuals who have made long-term and significant contributions to promoting Chinese language education, cultural activities and academic exchange. A Confucian educator sees education as a mission that contributes to human well-being. “Such an educator promotes internationalization of education on the belief that every human being is entitled to being educated, and views education as a social duty contributing towards the ends of achieving peace and mutual understanding in the world.” In this sense, Yu concluded, George C. Lee has long been recognized as an eminent Confucian educator.

The impact of Lee’s work on UB’s international profile is nothing short of momentous. In 2014-15, UB enrolled nearly 2,000 students from China and maintains academic and scholarly

exchange agreements with five Chinese universities. UB has many successful and influential Chinese alumni in China, the U.S., and other countries. China’s former Minister of Education, Dr. Zhou Ji, earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at UB, and the founder of Baidu, Li Yanhong, also studied here.

The UB Confucius Institute, with more than 20,000 Western New Yorkers participating in its programs each year, has benefitted greatly from Lee’s visionary work, and he currently serves on the Confucius Institute board of directors. His groundbreaking work has also helped advance the scholarship of numerous UB students and professors who travel to China each year for collaborative research projects, educational exchange, and language learning.

Introducing the UBCI “ConfuciusEducator Award”Excerpts from the speech of Jiyuan Yu, Professor of Philosophy

and UBCI Director, Honoring Professor George C. Lee

The “Confucius Educator Award” was set up in 2014 as the highest honor of UBCI. It is named after Confucius, not simply because it is from the UB Confucius Institute, but because it is bestowed upon individuals who embody the virtue of an educator advocated by Confucius and Confucianism.

The “Confucius Educator Award” is presented to individuals at UB and in Western New York who have made long-term and significant contributions to promoting Chinese language education, cultural activities and academic exchanges. A Confucius Educator not only is a great teacher and scholar, but also takes education as a mission to contribute to human well-being. Such an educator promotes internationalization of education on the belief that every human being is entitled to being educated, and views education as a social duty contributing towards the ends of achieving peace and mutual understanding in the world.

Professor George Lee has been commonly recognized as a Confucius Educator in this sense. Speeches and letters delivered this afternoon have also demonstrated his virtue. On behalf of the UB Confucius Institute, I proudly announce Professor George C. Lee as the first recipient of this distinguished award. I invite Professor Stephen Dunnett, UBCI Chair of the Board, to join me in presenting the Award to Professor George C. Lee. Congratulations, George!

“A letter to commemorate Professor George C. Lee, a dedicated well-digger” (excerpts)

Dear Professor George C. Lee,

On behalf of all the students, faculty and staff of Beijing University of Technology, I am writing this letter to congratulate you on your “Confucius Educator Award”. Meanwhile, I thank you for your pioneering work in developing the cooperative relationship between BJUT and UB.

UB was the first partner that BJUT bonded with since China’s Open-up policy. In 1980, you, then Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at UB, visited Beijing University of Technology and signed the first Agreement for SCHOLARY EXCHANGE AND COLLABORATION with BJUT, which marked the beginning of the cooperation between BJUT and UB. Since then, our two institutions exchanged many scholars in earthquake engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, information technology etc.

In the past 35 years, scores of faculty, staff and the students of BJUT have benefited from this program, which not only helped these people broaden their eye scope, but also improved their professional prowess. Thanks to our sustained and rich cooperation, the friendship of our two institutions has been strengthened; the academic and cultural exchange between US and China has been deepened. All of these achievements shall be indebted to you, Prof. George C. Lee.

There is a Chinese old saying goes as “Don’t forget the well-diggers when drinking from it”. Every faculty and student of BJUT who benefited from our exchange program shall never forget your contribution. We shall always feel grateful for you for the cooperative relationship of our two universities. Prof. Zheng JichunChairman of the University Council Beijing University of Technology

Rooted and Roaming: States of Contemporary Chinese Art

In September, the Confucius Institute and Department of Art cosponsored a week-long visit by a delegation of artists and art historians from Tsinghua University, culminating in the September 10 symposium, “Rooted and Roaming: States of Contemporary Chinese Art.”

The symposium focused on two related questions: (1) What is the relationship of contemporary Chinese art to the deep-rooted

cultural traditions from which it stems? (2) What is the role of academia in China and abroad in generating the discourse and methodologies that will shape the future of art-making in China?

Participants in the symposium included two professors and one graduate student from Tsinghua and acclaimed media arts curator and visiting professor at New York University’s Steinhardt School Xiaoying Juliette Yuan.

In addition to the symposium, the Tsinghua delegation’s productive week included meetings with senior UB administrators and tours of Buffalo’s impressive art museums and historic sites.

Groundwork was laid for continued collaboration with students and faculty at Tsinghua University, including an arts residency by six UB graduate students in January 2016.

UB Confucius Institute Commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II with Flying Tigers Lecture and Exhibition纪念第二次世界大战胜利70周年,飞虎队讲座展

On September 28, 2015, UB professor Deborah Chung recounted the wartime experiences of her mother, Rebecca Chan Chung, with the “Flying Tigers” and the China National Aviation Corporation at an event sponsored by the UB Confucius Institute and the College of Arts and Sciences. Held in conjunction with UB’s Mid-Autumn Festival and Confucius Day celebrations, the lecture and exhibition commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The event included an exhibition of photos and memorabilia entitled “World War II with the Flying Tigers.”

In her lecture, Chung told an audience of UB students, faculty and local veterans that after serving with the Flying Tigers, her mother was hired by the China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) to work as a stewardess/nurse. Based in Calcutta, India, she flew more than 50 flights on transport planes over the Himalayas from India to China. These flights were essential for supplying military forces in China after the Japanese defeated the British in Burma and closed off the Burma Road.

In January 2012, Rebecca Chan Chung posthumously received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, presented to Deborah Chung by then-U.S. Representative Kathy Hochul.

Deborah Chung co-authored her mother’s memoirs, titled Piloted to Serve: Memoirs of Rebecca Chan Chung. In her preface to the memoirs, Deborah Chung wrote: “I would like to . . . remember the close cooperation between the U.S. and China during the Japanese invasion of China in World War II and to honor the many military and CNAC personnel that lost their lives in this effort.”

Confucius Institute Scholarship Winners孔院奖学金

In 2015-2016, three UB undergraduate students are studying in China on scholarships awarded by Confucius Institute Headquarters. International Studies majors Michaela Rubinfeld and Drew Glover are studying at Shanghai Normal University for the full academic year, and Eric Rinehart, who is pursuing a BS in nursing, studied at Capital Normal University in Beijing for the fall semester.

All three scholarship winners were awarded free tuition and housing in China, along with a monthly stipend of 2,500 yuan (about $400 at the current exchange rate). The students were recommended for the scholarship by the UB Confucius Institute.

Confucius Institute Moves to New Office Suite新的办公空间

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Board Chair Stephen Dunnett, UB Vice Provost for International Education, in June 2015 UBCI moved into a new office and classroom suite in the UB Commons. UBCI now has a dedicated room for classes, tutoring, activities and meetings, and an excellent space to display the Hanban-donated China Exploratorium. The facility also includes an adjacent storage room, which makes preparing for events significantly easier than in previous years. We hope all of you can enjoy an event or visit us here in 113 UB Commons in 2016.
