Bob Clendenin was describing a working model of Charles Babbage’s Dif-ference Engine 2, an early computer, that he saw in California last week. Babbage, (1791-1871), a computer pioneer, designed the first automatic comput-

ing engines. He invented computers but failed to build them, due to insufficient funding and limi-tations in machining technology of the era.

The first complete Babbage Engine was com-pleted in London in 2002, 153 years after it was designed. Difference Engine No. 2, an automatic mechanical calculator designed to tabulate poly-nomial functions, is a sight no Victorian ever saw. It is built faithfully to the original draw-ings, consists of 8,000 parts, weighs five tons, and measures 11 feet long. An identical Engine, completed in March 2008 is on display at the Computer History Mu-seum in Mountain View, California.

Rotary International shared the polio eradica-tion message with the world Saturday during a massive charity concert in New York’s Cen-tral Park, organized by the Global Poverty Project. Headlined by the Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, and Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Global Citizen Festival 2012 drew a live audience of more than 60,000, and many more online and via television broadcasts.

Babbage Engine and Charitable Giving

Sipping coffee, waiting for The Bell, we discuss politics and find Tom Fisher is now teaching math at The Academy. Also im-pressive is Chris Gover's knowledge of the Babbage Difference Engine. This mechanical computing de-

vice was designed by Charles Babbage in 1837, but not until 2002 was it completely built, faithful to original drawings. Mike Col-gan announces he is getting married some day after tomorrow. The Bell does ring and Wayne prays The Prayer, your Guest Editor pledges The Pledge, and Don Roll takes the lead in God Bless America. Net in hand, Sergeant Don Helt greets visit-ing Rotarians from Texas and Canada with a quick segue to Birthdays and Anniversaries, which include Bob McDuffie's dollar for the anniversary of Peanuts. Both Meera Adhi and Vibha Kumar donate for Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. Your Guest Editor gave a dollar for his own birthday back on April 28.

Stephen Carter introduces Guest Speaker Ken Schultz, a financial advisor, author and real estate developer, to talk about planned giv-ing and something about hypnosis not being as we see it on TV. He explains that money can be left to charity through an annuity or life in-surance policy. "When you're dead," he says, "you won't care about money." With a twist in our regular schedule, Presi-

dent Carl opens the way to announcements: Visani comedy night is November 1. We can still sign sponsors and golfers for our October 20 Golf tourney. Needing Bingo help, Meera and Rick Hayman volunteer for October 25 while the European Connection, Darryl Keys and José Basilio agree to work on November 11. We still need helpers for December 9 and 20. Charity Quiz Challenge starts at 6:30 on October 10 (that's tomorrow night) benefitting the Drew Lisby Foundation. Get there a few minutes early to pay your admission fee, find your table and order food and drink. Remembering October is Vocational Ser-vice Month and Breast Cancer Month, Rick leads The Four-Way Test as we walk out into the Florida Sunshine.

Robert Cohen - Guest Speaker

Mr. Cohen has served as the Federal Security Director for Southwest Florida International Air-port since December 2004.

From July 2008 until October 2009, Mr. Cohen joined the U.S. Department of Homeland Secu-rity on a 15 month detail, where he served as the Deputy Director for the Office of Operations Coordination and Planning. In this role he was responsible for integrating operations across component agencies as well as coordinating with state, local, tribal and other Federal Depart-ments that have a role in preventing, preparing for and responding to acts of terrorism, natural disasters and other emergencies.

Prior to joining the TSA, Mr. Cohen served as the Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense where he over-saw plans and programs to respond to and miti-gate the results of national catastrophes and disasters and to advise on the response to re-quest for assistance from civilian authorities.

Previously, he was Deputy Secretary of the De-partment of Children and Families for the State of Florida, overseeing an annual budget of $4 billion.

He retired from the Marine Corps in 1997 as a Colonel, having commanded the 4th Marine Regiment and amongst other notable achieve-ments, he was Chief of Staff of Marine Forces, Somalia.

A native of Pennsylvania, he holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Miami, Florida and Master of Science Degree in Man-agement from Salve Regina College. He is also a graduate of the USMC War College.

He is married to Marti and they have 2 sons, Brad & Ryan, 2 daughters-in-law, Jenny and Lindsey and 3 grandsons, Bryce, Gavin & Ry-der.
