On Sept. l, 2009, I set off for horse territory yet unexplored , the approvals of the American Holsteiner Horse Asso-ciation. While I have read much about the process, I had never attended with or without a horse in tow. Never dauntedby inexperience, Linda Smith, Lynn Eggerling and I left for Lawrence, KS with my mare, Capita (Tia), and Linda’s yearlingfilly, Asia.

The approvals in Lawrence were held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and were coordinated by a KCDS member, Sheri Ellenbecker, who presented several of her own horses. The judge was Arlene Rigdon, who was leavingfor a week of travelling around the country to various other approval sites along with a representative of the AHHA.After braiding and polishing and brushing the horses within an inch of their lives, the approvals commenced. For themares, the first order of business was measurement. The minimum height requirement is l5.2. Tia measured 16.1 hands, well within the standard. The horse’s registration papers are also certified by the AHHA representative at this time as wellas matched with the DNA sample submitted ahead of time.

The next stage was presenting the horses on the triangle and at liberty. Jana Wagner very capably showed Tia atthe walk and the trot in hand. Tia was then set at liberty and proved to be quite the showoff. She snorted, raised her tailand appeared to grow about 4 inches in height. She then proceeded to show the judge the gaits that earned her an “8” onher trot and a “7” on her canter, much to the delight of the crowd.

It was optional to show the horse at free-jumping as well but as we hadn’t practiced, we decided not to participatein that particular phase. The free jumping was approached with varying degrees of enthusiasm by the mares who did gothrough.

At the end of each mare’s individual evaluation, we were advised whether she was invited to return at the end. Allmares who passed this phase were then brought into the ring together and walked around before the judge (think Westminster Kennel Club show). She then placed them in order and much to my delight, Tia was reserve Champion witha score of 49 earning her a place in the Main Mare Premium book. The champion received a score of 51 and placementin the Main Mare Premium Select book. A review of the 2008 approvals shows that only 11 mares nationally scored 49or higher.

The mares are evaluated on 7 criteria: type, topline, front legs, hind legs, walk, trot and canter. After placing themares, the judge discussed how she scored each mare on each area. It was educational to listen to the rationale for thescores given.

The yearling filly owned by Linda Smith also received a premium rating. The yearlings are evaluatedat liberty only. Asia was the highest scoring yearling atthe site.

To end the day, the officials, exhibitors andspectators were treated to a wonderful lunch provided bythe Ellenbeckers. The approvals are promoted as providing an opportunity to socialize as well as showyour horse and this site provided a very enjoyable day inboth respects.

LEAD CHANGESUSEF Rule Changes for 2010 (Summary of changes effective 12/1/2009)

Submitted by Steve Gerdes

Every year USEF makes a few rule changes. This year it feels a bit like a makeover. No changes for whiplength, still 47.2 inches including lash. No changes to bits or bridles. Score sheets appear to be the same as2009. Well, what exactly are we talking about? The biggest changes this year affect competitions and competition management. I will attempt to outline the most relevant changes and how they may affect NDA,the Classic and her competitors.

Dressage Levels

Dressage competitions will be categorized by levels. Levels span from 1 to 5: 1 being the "introduction" to licensed competitions and 5 applying to CDI, USEF High Performance Selection Trials and National Championships. The Dressage Levels chart lays out a set of standards for 36 criteria for each level of competiton. These standards lay out the minmum requirements for such items as footing, schooling arenas (new term forwarm up arenas), stabling, show office, and management and judges. See the Dressage Levels chart includedwith this article.

Page 10: The Contact - Nebraska Dressage Association€¦ · The Contact December 2009/ January 2010 2010 NDA B˘aˇd Gillian Howell, President ghmetson@cox.net (2012) Sydney Ash, Vice President

The Cornhusker Classic will be classified as a Level 3 competiton which is the required level for competitionsapproved as qualifying events for the USEF Developing Horse Program (Jr/Yg/YA, and Young orse/DevelopingHorse). The Classic has been approved for 2010 as a Developing Horse Program qualifying event. This includes being a qualifying event for NAJYRC.

There are 2 changes required for Level 3 competitions that will be challenging for the Classic. First, schoolingarenas for Level 3 competitions must be a minimum size of a standard arena (20m x 60m). Aside from the 2performance arenas, there are only 2 other arenas at the Lancaster Event Center (LEC) that meet the requirement: the Multi Purpose Arena (MPA) and Pavillion I. Pavillion I is where warm up was at the 2009Classic. There is a substantial fee for the rental of each of these arenas so the Competiton Committee is working with LEC to rent the MPA and create a larger outdoor schooling arena. The outdoor area is enclosedand located between Pavillion II and Pavillion III, and is included with Pavillion III at no extra charge.

The second change that affects the Classic is the new requirement that both the show manager and secretaryhave 2 years of experience or 4 licensed show prior to November 30 of the year prior to the competition. BethWood has agreed to be the Classic 2010 show manager. Thank you Beth.

Entry Forms

The Federation Entry Agreement has been changed for 2010. This is the agreement on the back of the entryform. Each year there can be changes to the agreement. This makes it important, no... required, that you usea current year's entry form. The 2010 Entry Form will be attached to the prize list when it is available in March. It will also be available online. If you have an inventory of prior years' entry forms, you will need to dispose ofthem and use the form for the current year.

Picking Up Score Sheets and Ribbons

DR123(9) – Scoring, Classification and Prize-Giving: After the awards for a class have been presented, thejudge’s score sheet should be given to the competitor. The score sheet must be handed directly to the competitor or his representative. Privacy must be maintained.

In the past, we've set the score sheets and ribbons on a table available to the public and asked you to sign asheet stating that you picked up your score sheet. In an attempt to increase privacy and comply with ruleDR123, the Classic will no longer place the score sheets and ribbons on a table open to the public. Competitors will be required to pick up their score sheets and ribbons in the office. Dressage Sport HorseBreeding awards will be given ring-side. High points will still be awarded during an awards ceremony eachevening.

USDF Changes for the 2010 Qualifying Period

Regional Championships Program

Beginning with the 2010 qualifying periods for the Great American/USDF Regional Championships, the onlyclasses that can be used for qualifying are those that will be offered at the Championships. There will be noequivalent tests accepted as qualifying. Only the following classes can now be offered as qualifying. The Classic already offers these classes as qualifiers.

Matt’s dedication to the training of horse and rider is based on his system of horsemanship that

integrates classical principles of dressage, the requirements of today’s competitive dressage, and Natural

Horsemanship techniques.

Matt has successfully trained horses through Grand Prix Dressage that have gone on to compete nationally and interna-tionally as well as multiple horses finished in haute école including Capriole, Courbette, and Levade. Currently based in Florida, Matt is competing on the Florida show circuit. In addition, he travels throughout North America and Europe as a clinician and lectures and performs at exhibition venues with his Andalusian haute école and dressage acts. Matt studied primarily under Chuck Grant, USDF Hall of Fame member and recognized father of American dressage. As a working student he not only furthered his dressage riding skills, but also learned the art of training horses in haute école for exhibition performances. Matt spent the next seven years as the Principal Rider, Head Rider, and eventually Head Trainer for the Royal Lipizzaner Stallion Show where he trained as many as 16 stallions and riders for the daily performances all over North America, Europe, and Australia as well as performing his own high-energy solo acts.
