Thank you Delores and Bruce
For thirty one years Bruce Sandburg has hosted our annual Southern Arizona Chapter Christmas din-ner with the last decade co-hosted by Delores Shurtz. We probably can't count the wonderful memo-ries we have shared, the great food and all around meaningful fellowship we've enjoyed on Yavapai Trail .....Yes...In some way we have all contributed to this glorious holiday event in perfect weather, in fog and in snow one year, but we have always taken for granted it would be a good time and the ham, the whipped russets and the regal bird would be there waiting with the warm hospitality and a pizza from Pima. Bruce and Delores, many more appreciate what you have done than will take the time to tell you, but on behalf of all who have been there and all who wish they had.......THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
Richard Dormois

Run to the pines
Submitted by Malcolm Stinson
I am trying to get at least 20 Studebakers to join us in the
car show, RUN TO THE PINES in Pinetop, AZ. This show
is the last weekend in September. This year it is Septem-
ber 24th to the 27th. If we can get the 20 plus Studebakers
we will have a Studebaker class.
This is a very well attended event with free admis-
sion to spectators. There are thousands of people that just
come to see these cars. What a way to get our Studebak-
ers out and show them off. This show is so well attended
that when we send out the registration form in April , it is
full with the 550 cars within 10 days. We turn down several
people every year because they can not get their registra-
tion in fast enough. That alone should show that it is a real
great show.
The cost to register is $45.00 per car. What you
get for this is 2 tickets to a burger burn on Thursday night,
join in the run from Show Low to the Hon-dah Casino on
Friday with another 2 tickets to the Hon-dah BBQ. Display
your car on a lovely grass field and a chance to win and
take home a trophy.
There is also an Arts & Crafts show all this
weekend a very short distance away.
Please let me know if you would like to join us in
this event. I have 12 people signed up to date and we
need more. Thanks.

The History of Studebaker in Tucson: 1920—1988 by fred gooch
Researched and submitted by Fred Gooch. References: Tucson Public Library, Telephone and City Directories, Charlie hall, Bruce Sandburg, Chuck Nagle, Lee Beaudry and Frank Ronstadt. Part of this article was originally published in The Copper Starlight Jan/Feb 1982. 1920-21: Studebaker started selling cars in Tucson in 1920 at Ronstadt's, 70 N. 6th. I received a letter from Mr. Ronstadt confirming that they had sold cars in 1920-1921, but that he did not recall handling any other Studebaker products. Studebakers were sold in Tucson for almost 46 years, yet 1920, 1959, and 1960 were the only years with two Studebaker dealerships. The other dealer in 1920 was Ryland & Olcott at 355 Toole Ave. 1921-23: In 1921, Ryland & Olcott separated, and the Arthur W. Olcott Co. became the Studebaker dealer for 1921, 1922, and 1923 at 185 E. Broadway. 1924-26: For these three years, Studebakers were still sold at the 185 E. Broadway address, but by a new dealer, Tucson Auto Company. 1927-29: In 1927, Bowen & Sims Co. Inc.. Bought the dealership, and moved to the corner of Broadway and 5th. In 1928-29 they also sold Erskine and had a dealership located in Phoenix. 1930-31: Bowen & Sims parted company in 1930, and Mr. Maxwell joined with Bowen to form Bowen-Maxwell Inc. They sold Studebaker and Pierce-Arrow at the Broadway/5th location through 1931. 1932-33 Now, Bowen and Maxwell parted, and Mr. Jensen joined Bowen to form The Bowen Jensen Motor Co. They moved to 114-116 E. 6th and sold Studebaker, Pierce-Arrow, and Rockne through 1932/33. 1934-35 In 1934, Mr. Bowen decided to go solo and formed the Bowen motor Co. He added another building to the dealership (114-120 E. 6th), and took on Plymouth and DeSoto as well as Studebaker, Pierce-Arrow. In 1935 he dropped the Pierce- Arrow line, but continued with Studebaker, Plymouth ad DeSoto at the same address. 1936: As far as I can determine, there were no new Studebakers sold in Tucson during 1936. 1937: The new Studebaker dealership this year was Modern Motors; They sold cars at 509 N. 6th Ave. 1938: Mr. Simms decided to get back into the Studebaker business at this time. He had been half of the 1927-29 dealership; Bill
Simms Studebaker was located at 135 S. 6th Ave. 1939: Amos C. Cliff Motors had been the Graham/Willy’s dealer, and in 1939 he added Studebaker to his line-up at 208-218 E.
Broadway. 1940-60: For these 21 years, stability arrived for Studebaker; they were sold by Jack Erny and Bill Edel at J & B Motors, 616 N. Stone. This is probably the dealership most Tucsonan's remember best. After Studebaker moved from this location, the city used the site for bus barns. After J & B closed, Pete White sold Packard one door to the north. Bill Edel was also the Mercedes dealer for a short time. Regarding the Pete White Packard dealership, a mechanic (unknown name) rented this building for several years for a mechanic business. In the 1970’s I had several Morris M repaired there, my bills were al ways written up on Pete White Packard stationary. In 1959, the Lark was introduced. The dealership moved two blocks and to the west side of the street. Here, for two years, Studebaker would be sold by Beaudry Motors, at 847 N. Stone. 1961: Studebaker crossed the street again, and went another block north to 950 N. Stone. Owned by three men: Frank Giles,
Jack Nood, and another whose name could not be located. The dealership was operated as Oasis Motors. 1962-64: The next two years for Studebaker in Tucson were at the Oasis address. However when Ed Comitz purchased the dealer ship he renamed it Ed Comitz Studebaker. 1965-66: While we have little data on what could be called “The Last Gasp”, it appears that a Guy Burns briefly marketed the last production cars coming from the Canadian plant, which were powered by GM Engines.
Page 6 The Copper Starlight January/February 2015
The History of Studebaker—Continued
Studebaker had Tucson dealers for 45 of the detailed 46 year span. The longest span for one dealer was the 19 years of J&B Motors. In all, a total of 16 dealers existed, four of them located on North Stone Avenue. Fred Ronstadt worked as an apprentice at a blacksmith shop and later for Southern Pacific Railroad as a blacksmith and had originally came to Tucson from Magdalena, Sonora at age 14. Fred started his business in 1888 and by 1901 was sell-ing his self built wagons and buggies. As the first Tucson Auto Dealer he sold curved dash Oldsmobile's in 1904 and later added Studebaker, EMF, and Flanders. The 97 year old company closed in 1988. One of the last places of business for the Ronstadt's was donated to the city and became the Tucson Bus company hub.
KEEPING YOUR STUDEBAKER COOL
By Bob Miles
Anytime of the year is a good time to check your Studebaker’s cooling system. Especially before
taking any trips or to get ready to store your car for the winter.
First visually check your coolant level. There is another check that should be performed to insure
your anti-freeze is able to protect your engine.
Take your volt meter and set it on direct current. Take your negative lead for 12 volt, positive for 6 volt, and place on a
good ground. Take your other lead and touch the coolant in the open radiator neck. This gives you a reading for con-
ductivity in your coolant. If the reading is 1 volt or less, this is considered acceptable and this indicates a low level of
dissolved metals in the coolant. If you have a reading higher than 1 volt, the coolant should be changed with an anti-
freeze that has a rust inhibitor. This is certainly cheaper than a damaged block or head failure due to corrosion.
Early cars were not designed to operate under pressure or at higher temperatures. Older cars with unpressurized
Cooling systems lost 2 degrees for each 1000 feet of altitude. At 7,000 feet, the boiling point of water is 198 degrees.
Pressurized systems came in to use by every manufacturer in 1940. The first systems used 3 to 7 pounds of pressure.
In 1955 the system changed to 12 to 15 pounds of pressure. The boiling point of water increases with more pressure
on the system. No pressure on the system means water boils at 212 degrees, under 5 pounds of pressure water boils
at 227 degrees, 10 pounds of pressure boils at 240, and thus at 15 pounds will boil at 255 degrees.
It should be mentioned that while you can find pressure caps to fit earlier cars, installing one can cause damage to a
radiator that wasn't designed for high pressures.
Additionally, check your thermostat. Change if there is any suspicion that it is not working correctly. One way to test a
thermostat is to put it in a pan of water and apply heat. Test with a thermometer and see at what temperature the ther-
mostat opens. If the thermostat is working correctly it will open at the temperature indicated on the thermostat. If the
thermostat is opening correctly then your heating problems are caused by something else.

holiday events continued
Thanks, Bruce and Delores, for your hospitality for again another year. It was in the 90s that Gail and I met Dandurand’s, fellow SDC editors, and consequently started crashing your Christmas Party while traveling in our RV. Next thank you to the Marion's - Kelly has stepped up to be the tour master and his wife, Cindy, has volunteered to edit the news-letter. Thanks also to the Kaisers. Jerry and I have something in common more than Studebakers since we were both proofreaders and editor’s spouses (in addition to SAC editor for a few years, Gail edited the Colorado/Wyoming/Nebraska chapters for over a decade). We know the editor’s job is more of a sentence with no parole. Thank you for your years of service. There are many other loyal Studebaker enthusiasts who deserve thanks for their contributions but the tour master and newsletter editor are the most influential. Without enjoyable activities, attendance drops, and without good promotion, folks don’t get the message. Let’s all help Kelly and Cindy reach high expectations. Like our marquee, DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. Here’s to a great 2015. . . Steve Ault
