The Corner Patch Rainbow Stars Block of the Month Interwoven Star You will need your background, light, dark and 2 mediums of purple. This block is foundation pieced. NB – the photos are done with blue fabrics not purples. The block needs to be completed in four sections. The pattern has dotted lines round it to show where to join the different sections. On each section mark the colours you will be using. Set the machine to a short stitch as it is easier to tear away the paper foundations after. Cut a fabric scrap roughly the shape of piece1 and larger to allow for a seam allowance. Remember the mirror image effect when you are cutting. Pin it to the unmarked side of the foundation and ensure that it covers all the shape marked “1”. Pin along the seam line between 1 and 2 – this will help you to position the second piece more accurately.

Rainbow Stars Block of the Month

    Interwoven Star

You will need your background, light, dark and 2 mediums of purple.

  • Now cut a fabric scrap roughly the size and shape of piece 2, but considerably larger. Check by placing it right side down on the marked side of the foundation. Then place right side down on top of piece 1 on the unmarked side of the foundation and lining up with the pinned seam line. Pin it in place on the unmarked side of the foundation, along the seam line between 1 and 2, right sides together, on top of piece 1. Ensure that when it is flipped over into place it covers the whole of shape 2.

Stitch along the seam line. Do not stitch right into the seam allowance, stop on the seam line or no more than half a stitch over. Take it to the cutting mat – just double check that it does cover all of piece 2 when flipped back. Press the foundation paper back along the seam line. Ensure Piece 2 is folded

back, right sides together with Piece 1.

  • Trim the seam, and flip piece 2 into place. Press.

Repeat with a third fabric scrap to complete piece three.

  • Repeat with Piece 4

Press the final piece back and pin all the pieces securely to the paper so they don’t flap and fold over (this is essential while you stitch each piece as well – pieces that are flapping in the breeze have an awful habit of folding back and getting caught in the seam). It doesn’t look like a block yet!

  • Lengthen the stitch length back to ‘normal’ and stay stitch just inside the dotted line around the triangle.

    Cut along the dotted lines.

Complete each section of the block. Then join the sections together along the dotted line(s) to complete. Remove the papers.

  • Remember

    • Double check that you are sewing the pieces to the unmarked side of the

    foundation.

    • Will the piece you are sewing fit when you flip it over?

    • Trim each seam after you have sewn it – to ¼ inch.

    • Are you sewing the pieces in the right order?

    • Will the fabric be right side up when you flip it?

    • Have you pinned the excess fabric out of the way of the seam to be stitched?

NB Templates are available if you prefer not to foundation piece.
