THE ORIGIN OF THE REDD INITIATIVE

2007/2009 – REDD NORTHWEST - MT INITIATIVE

Partnership

• Forest area: 108 000 km², 82% remaining

• Diversity of stakeholders and land use categories:

• 11 indigenous lands (31%) and 9 protected areas (4%)

• Medium-large private properties (62%)

• 11 smallholder settlements (3%)

• Previous investment in sustainable development initiatives, e.g.: GEF/UNDP

Northwest Mato Grosso RegionCotriguaçu Pilot Project (2009/2010)

Objective:

To promote a new trajectory for social and economic

development, based on the conservation and sustainable

management of natural resources.

Challenges:

How to engage people without direct payment in short-term after diagnose?

How to involve all stakeholders in the objective?

• Zero illegal deforestation agreement in Cotriguaçu a consequence of new territorial management model

and not the initial objective

• Municipality better prepared for REDD+
