Miller family enjoys rodeo tradition His favorite music artists, George Strait and Garth Brooks, share a common bond with Ryan Miller - the youngest of the Miller family name of Neepawa - to compete in the sport of rodeo. The grade 12 graduate is involved in a family tradition - much like rodeo itself - with pint size cowgirls and cowboys getting the bug early thanks to a competing parent or parents. For Miller, he has not only gained plenty of knowledge by competing at the high school level, but the wisdom passed down by his father and mother, Neil and Brenda, along with older brother Justin, has made him a better cowboy. “My dad has competed in rodeo for years - he started competing at roping when he was 15 and competed in calf roping, team roping and steer wrestling for many years,” stated Miller. “He was the steer wrestling champion on numerous occasions within the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA) and this past October, he was inducted into the MRCA Hall of Fame.” And like his father, Justin has staked claim to a number of championships at both the high school and college level including being a top bulldogger. “As a Manitoba High School Rodeo Association (MHSRA) member for four years, my brother won all round championships, along with steer wrestling and calf roping titles,” said Miller. “Upon graduation in 2006, he became a member of the Dickinson, ND rodeo team, winning the all around champion and two steer wrestling championships for the Great Plains Region. As a college rodeo athlete he competed at three finals in Casper, WY and presently holds down the arena record in steer wrestling at the college finals.” Born into lifestyle Along with providing good horses that fit him to compete on, Miller has been around the cowboy lifestyle since he was born 18 years ago. Citing he was already going to MHSRA events with his parents and older brother, it was fitting that Miller try his hand at certain rodeo events when they brought in the Wrangler Junior High Division in the fall of 2004. “I decided to try boys goat tying and breakaway roping as a grade 6 student,” commented Miller. “Enjoying both events, I added chute dogging in grade 7 and in my final year of junior high eligibility I entered ribbon roping and changed from breakaway to tie down roping, formerly known as calf roping.” Even at a young age, Miller was a role model, finishing out the Wrangler division winning the goat tying, chute dogging, tie down roping, and all around championships. Venturing into high school com- petition in 2007, Miller competed in tie down roping and team roping, and to this day still competes in those two events with tie down roping being a favorite. “Being involved in the MHSRA has put forth good sportsmanship, good friends, and lots of fun,” added Miller, who has also laced on the skates in high school hockey over the past four years. “Rodeo is a great pastime and I really enjoy it. With the cowboy lifestyle being a part of mine and my family’s life for so long, the mileage needed to be covered to make the show, doesn’t bother me at all.” But at the same time, Miller found it nice to have the opportunity to compete at a hometown rodeo. “Hometown rodeos such as my case being the Stoney Creek Stampede in June is a blessing, as it’s always nice to showcase your talents in front of family and friends,” stressed Miller. Having the opportunity to be part of Team Manitoba at the Nationals in Gillette, Wyoming and the Canadians in Virden, Manitoba in 2010 was also a blessing, but a tad disappointing as well. “Leading the tie down roping going into the final round at the Canadian finals, I was disappointed that I missed my calf,” shared Miller, who will graduate from the Neepawa Area Collegiate Institute in June. “However, I was very happy to win the second round of the Tie Down Roping and am proud to wear a Canadians go round buckle. Miller qualified for both the Nationals and Canadians once again this year in tie down and team roping. In 2010, it wasn’t only competing against top elite high school rodeo athletes that made it extra special, as taking out his MRCA card, Miller also had the time of his life team roping with an extra special partner and mentor in his dad – a champion that has a passion for rodeo at various levels including high school where stars such as Miller shine brightly. Miller family enjoys rodeo traditionHis favorite music artists, George Strait and Garth Brooks, share a common bond with Ryan Miller - the youngest of the Miller family name of Neepawa - to compete in the sport of rodeo. Howdy all; last time I wrote I promised you some small talk.Well where has the time gone, hard to believe we are already intoAugust. It was a very wet spring/summer in our part of the world, less than 7% of the crop was sown (according to Mb cropinsurance office) but when the sun did show up the grass and hayjust exploded. I have spoke with many people who were negativelyaffected by this years flood and when ever we started to feeloverwhelmed we would talk to someone who had it a lot worsethan we did and where reminded how lucky we were. We wherewet at our place but we were lucky that we didn’t have our homeand lively hood threatened like so many people. It has been anextraordinary year with whole communities drastically affectedall along the Souris River. Some rodeos have had to be postponedour cancelled this year due to their rodeo grounds beingunderwater, literally. In some cases these rodeos are thecommunities’ main event for the year and when people are downthey could need these events to not only boost the economy butalso their over all moral.

Back to business at our last meeting we had in depthconversation about the MRCA and rodeo in general; our verystrong total membership numbers and our alarmingly low # ofrough stock card holders. We had a great discussion and bouncedaround many different ideas; we all know that we must dosomething to increase the numbers at that end of the arena. Weall agree that the long term solution is education, clinics, gettingnew kids started. Here’s where I am going to get myself in trouble, because you are all thinking well we have clinics out there andthat’s not working? True, but it is the mentality behind theseclinics that is not working. “We’ll weed out the week one’s right ofthe bat” I’ve heard that said more than once. Well here we are 50years of weeding out the week and we have no bareback riders

left! Let me put it this way: if a young guy came to our place andwanted to learn how to steer wrestle, wanted to join MY sport, wanted to buy a card support My association, wanted to startentering rodeos possibly be involved in rodeo the rest of his life inone way or another: I would NEVER put him on a colt with 20rides hold the colt in the corner load him a fresh wild steer andjust tell him to nod his head and bail off, get tough or quit. Whynot because he would get hurt (or killed) and never steer wrestleagain, exactly the opposite affect I want my clinics to have. Wouldyou agree? I believe the goal of a clinic should be to get peoplestarted, to grow our sport. They should be positive, fun and safe. Not the same as the above mentioned “theory” but locally theentries in steer wrestling have grown 30%-40%, different than theother end of the arena? But I guess are new guys aren’t as tough!

Just so you know the low numbers of bareback riders andrough stock cardholders is a problem in rodeo in general. Thoseat the top of our sport are addressing this problem and takingaction: the “PRCA” has someone on the full time payroll to travelaround put on clinics and promote the event and the sport ingeneral. The “Calgary stampede” is doing a great job of getting thenovice contestants going. We must all work together; we have to doour part to get these guys started in our part of the world. Let’snot forget we have produced 2 of the top bareback riders inCanada right now in “Colin Adams” and “Lane Collins”, not tomention Canadian PBR champion “Zane Lambert”. So we have thetalent pool to draw from and we are going to dedicate a lot of time, effort and thought to improving the number of rough stockcontestants but we need your help. I know I know I am alwaysasking you to do something; I can’t ever just make a simplereport. Sorry not sorry.

Rodeo season is well under way, and so far it has been another fantastic season! Thank you and congrats toMiami Rodeo Committee, Shilo Rodeo Committee and Arborg Rodeo Committee on hosting very successfulrodeos! We look forward to visiting Minnedosa, McCreary and Winkler in the upcoming weeks!

Unfortunately due to the flooding situation, Souris Rodeo had to be cancelled for this year. We look forward toworking with them towards a rodeo in 2012, and hope that Mother Nature will cooperate!

It is hard to believe, but it is already time to start thinking about Finals, which will be hosted once again in thefantastic community of Carman, on September 10th and 11th. I invite all members to attend the Annual GeneralMeeting on September 11th at 10:00am, and remind all Finals Contestants that their attendance is mandatory. Staytuned for more information on Finals as it comes available!

Just a friendly reminder for all contestants to make sure you are familiar with the rules for your event as wellas general HRA rules, and the specific duties that may go along with your event. Barrel racers please remem-ber if it is your responsibility to set up or take down timers. All contestants please keep in mind the dress coderegulations – that you must be in western attire one hour before the performance and during the entire per-formance.

Thanks everyone for helping to make 2011 another successful season for Heartland Rodeo!Holly Gardiner, President

Picket Line - Horse BusinessThey know what they’re doin’ but

most of the time we confuse themby giving orders when we couldsave ourselves the trouble and letthem pick and choose their ownway without us interfering.

Watch those cutting horsessometime. The rider picks thecow to cut and then drops thereins and holds on. The horsedoes the rest without anyoutside help from the personon his back. He knows whatto do and goes to work.

I never worried whethermy horse was in the rightlead or not when we werechasing cows. I figured itwas his job to know

what legs to use first when hewas running or loping. We always got there

okay so he must have made his legs go where they weresupposed to at the right time.

My horse never has trouble getting in the right lead when he’s running in the pasture. In fact, he was always in the correct lead until I went to a clinic and learned a little aboutlead changes. I began cueing him with leg and rein pressure to force him into the rightlead. With my new knowledge and expert guidance, he most always took off on the wronglead.

I went to another clinic and suffered humiliation and abuse when the instructor yelled,“What are you doing?” He started slapping his hand on top of his hat like he couldn’tbelieve what he was seeing when he watched me try to teach my horse how to makeflying lead changes. Mortified by his affront to my horsemanship, I pulled my mount into ahard stop and glared at him. Jack, the instructor, shook his head and yelled, “Keep riding, lope that horse in circles until I tell you to turn the other way and don’t do anything but reinhim the opposite direction.”

Jack just didn’t understand that you need to be moving the horse one way with your legsand the other way with your reins all the while looking the opposite direction so the horsecould read your mind. Doubtful, I loped around the arena and waited faor Jack to tell mewhen to change direction.

I came through the center of the arena and he yelled, “Turn!” I moved the reins theopposite direction and Bingo! The horse made a smooth lead change without me makinghim do any body contortions or head twisting. He did it on his own without my help. Jackwas right! I decided right then and there that from now on it was the horse’s business whatlegs he was going to use first.

Ride through heavy woods or brush on the only trail wide enough for a horse to passand then try to find it again on your way back later in the day. Bushes and trees all seemto look alike when you return. Missing the trail can mean tough going trying to breakthrough the brush to get back in open country.

I found out it’s a lot easier to let my horse show me the trail back and save myself thetrouble of searching. The horse will tell you when you get there. All you have to do is trusthim. Horses aren’t the only critters that are stubborn and hard-headed. I rode back andforth along heavy willows trying to find the trail l used earlier in the day that led around ahigh mountain swamp. My horse kept stopping and balking at a certain spot. Withsawdust for brains, it didn’t dawn on me that he was trying to tell me something.

I kept hunting. Everything looked alike and I couldn’t find that trail. Sonny stopped inthe same spot again and nickered. It was a funny nicker and I wondered what that meantin horse talk. While I was wondering he stepped through the willows and, lo and behold,we were on the trail home. I still wonder about that nicker. It sounded insulting.

Give em’ some credit and stay out of their way. Slack the reins and let them pick theirown way across those bad spots. They know the best way to work all four legs at the sametime. Maybe with four legs it might be easier to cross a bog a different way than atwo-legged critter would choose.

I would guess that horses know a lot more about horses than humans do. Have you evernoticed how a horse can find the only hole in a fence to escape through, or stand andnuzzle a gate latch until he finally gets it open? They know exactly what they’re doing, butwhen we open that same gate and want them to move through it, one or more of thoseexpert gate pickers will always hang up between the open gate and the fence and actbewildered and in mortal danger. As soon as you turn your back and walk away acting likeyou don’t care if he’s trapped or not, he’ll back out and come flying around the gate in thecorrect lead with no help or outside interference.
