The trees were donated to the village by Neil and Steffi Askew and were their only wedding gifts from friends and family. All the trees were lovingly planted and nurtured by Neil, his son and his daughter in the spring of 2011 and were to be a lasting memorial of their 2010 wedding. The trees were planted around the perimeter of the 10 acre field and would, in time, have provided a wind break and hedging for the somewhat exposed area. A wide variety of species was planted and would, eventually, have made for a beautiful sight and a fitting memory of their wedding day, also held on this same field. This is all now ruined, thanks to some heartless, selfish and criminal person(s) who obviously did not want them there. Their motives beggar belief. The Askews are heartbroken. Ctd on page 4

Tommy Cooper One-Linersfrom IngridI went to buy some camouflagetrousers the other day but I couldn'tfind any.I went to the butchers the other dayand I bet him 50 quid that hecouldn't reach the meat off the topshelf. He said,'No, the steaks are too high.'My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong currantpulled him in.Two elephants walk off a cliff...boom, boom!So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me'Can you give me a lift?' I said 'Sure, you look great, theworld's your oyster, go for it.’You know, somebody actually complimented me on mydriving today. They left a little note on the windscreen. Itsaid, 'Parking Fine.' So that was nice.A man walked into the doctors, he said, 'I've hurt myarm in several places'. The doctor said, 'Well don't gothere anymore'

ON THEMOVE!!Yes, PoppylandArea Partnership ison the move. Witha great deal ofregret Poppyland isleaving Merchants’Place, which hasbeen its homesince its inceptionsix years ago. With it will begoing the Credit Union (CommunityBank), the Cromer and SheringhamCOAST Arts Festival, the Poppylandminibus and all the other PoppylandServices, including of course,CRABLINE.We developed Merchants’ PlaceCommunity Resource and LearningCentre during the Community phaseof CromerRegeneration as a hubfor all kinds ofcommunity ledactivity. It won aNational award fromAction for MarketTowns for the bestproject in the countryafter its first year ofoperation in 2007.And since then both itsuse and its reputationhas grown – to suchan extent that with theexpansion of Poppyland’s activities totake on Crabline, there is just not theoffice space in the building to allowus to run and manage a communitypaper in a professional andbusinesslike manner along witheverything else. I personally am sadsince the development and operationof Merchants’ Place has been part ofmy life for more than 10 years. However, in this particular case thereis a real silver lining! Poppyland’surgent need for space coincided with

the Town Council determining thatNorth Lodge become more of a hubfor community use. We have beenable to lease a suite of three officeson the ground floor, overlooking thepark, and still be only a few momentsfrom Merchants’ Place and itsresources, and from the centre oftown.

So, as of the end of March, that iswhere we will be based – so wish usluck in our new home, and keep thestories, news and letters coming –not to mention bookings for theminibus, visits to the communitybank and ideas for projects andfunding.

Dear Readers.I would like to draw your attention tothe increasing number of stray andunclaimed cats that are turning up inthis area.  With Spring upon us, un-neutered toms will wander far afieldin search of un-spayed females. They can become lost and injuredand a problem to other people. Please have your animals spayed andneutered and if possiblemicrochipped. Neutering can be donefrom the age of 6 months and willprevent the birth of unwanted litters. There are just not enough goodhomes to go round and there are nomedical benefits in letting youranimal have even one litter.  There isfinancial help if you cannot afford thevet fees.  Ask your local vet fordetails, they will always be pleased toadvise. Also please, please pick up your dogpoo and dispose of it properly. This isalso on the increase with some petowners leaving the mess or picking itup in poo bags and then leaving thebags in hedges or up in trees.  Howinconsiderate.  Dogs get the blameand it is not their fault.  Let us all beresponsible for the welfare of ouranimals.  It is up to us to take goodcare of them.Thank youChristine Parmenter

Dear EditorJanet Munro pointed out in your lastissue that we are no longer allowedplastic bags when shopping. May Imention that some of us have beentaking the old bag shopping foryears.Back in the days when the old bagwas younger, nobody seemed tomind. But over the years the old bagstarted to look tired and worn so wasleft at home. Particularly when thesupermarkets stared forcing newshiny virgin plastic bags on us atevery opportunity. How could a manresist? Then the tide turned and the goodiesinferred that every plastic bag killeda dolphin so, horror of horrors, wewere no longer to have sinful freshones forced on. In fact we would nowhave to pay and were scolded foreven thinking of taking one home. This is when I started taking the oldbag shopping again. However, agehas caught up and the old bag is asad sight now with a few wrinklesand creases in the most unexpectedplaces plus a sagging bottom whichnearly touches the floor. Yet we stillenjoy our shopping trips together, often returning home with the oldbag happily full of cheap cookingsherry.Nigel Holmes

Go Farther forGofatherThere has long been atradition in our local fishingtowns of folks being namedaccording to personalattributes or past experiences. When Robert Pegg wentfishing with his father, hewould often demand that theyshould "go farther". Althoughit probably meant little to himat the time, the 'Gofather'nickname would stay with himfor the rest of his life.Gofather Pegg became a tourismentrepreneur in Sheringham beforethe term had been invented. He wasresponsible for some of the sights wetake so much for granted nowadays.

He set about building early beachhuts (starting with tepee style thenadapting the design to the morefamiliar sentry-box shape), he renteddeck chairs and he would always

have a bag of sweets in his pocketfor visiting children. But he was alsoinstrumental in increasing the bore ofthe main sewer pipe on theunderstanding that people wouldflock to the North Norfolk town - hewas quite correct. The Upcher Community Partnershipin the town is currently planning apermanent reminder of Gofather'sinfluence in the town and has enlistedthe help of Baconsthorpe artist,Mitchell House, to produce a full sizestatue of this local hero which will

take pride of place on the seafrontalongside four 3 dimensional plaquesdepicting events and scenes from

Sheringham's history as a seasidefishing town. The model of Gofather Pegg andseveral illustrations which might be

used to help design the plaques areon display in the Upcher Shop inStation Road, Sheringham. Why notpop in and have a look? JanetFarrow, the Upcher CommunityPartnership's coordinator and MitchellHouse would love to hear yourcomments on the statue and theproposed plaques. Let's get GofatherPegg the recognition he deserves!

Norfolk Lore[We’re repeating this story followingconcerns that the previous version inissue number 239 was a little difficultto read.]

Shrieking PitsPerhaps the best known Shrieking Pitin the district is at Hungry Hill, between Northrepps and Sidestrand;it is claimed that a horse and cartwere lost completely in the deep, dark water that fills it. However thepit gains its name from the lasttormented sounds of a young womanwho lost her mind and threw herselfinto its waters.Esmeralda was the beautiful eighteenyear old daughter of a farm workerwho lived in Craft Lane, she becamea house maid at Shrublands, thefarm at the end of Craft Lane. Hertall graceful presence, long brownhair, sparkling brown eyes andattractive, even features werenoticed by many young men in thearea. Unfortunately Esmeralda wasdrawn to a shifty, worthless andmarried young farmer from Roughtonwho encouraged her.Seeing the developing problems thelandowner of the farm in Roughtonand the rector persuaded the youngfarmer, by threatening to restrict hislivelihood, to end the elicit affair.Initially Esmeralda appeared toaccept the situation but as this lostlove played on her mind herbehaviour became more eccentric.

She began wandering the district atnight and regularly walked from CraftLane to Sandy Lane to Hungry Hilland then returned home.On a cold, moonlight February nightin 1784 Esmeralda was following herusual route and in a particularlydistressed state. She stopped at thepit and having stared into the blackwaters for a while, momentarily tookleave of her senses and threw herselfin. Only when the icy chill of thewater shocked her mind back toreality did she realise her danger, butit was too late. Her first scream woke dogs anddisturbed those asleep in their beds;the second shriek confirmedsomething awful was happening andwith a shortened third shriekEsmeralda disappeared below thesurface.A few miles away at Aylmerton, closeto Roman Camp, there are anumber of shallowdepressions whichare the remains ofiron-workingpits. A recorddated 1870describesthem asbeingknownlocally astheshriekingpits andthat ‘loudshrieking issometimes heardproceeding fromthem; and a white

figure may be sometimes seengazing into the pits and wringing itshands’. Other records describe asimilar phenomenon at pits nearWeybourne but in this case theshrieking woman moves from pit topit looking hard into them. There isno explanation why the ShriekingWoman behaves as she does and anumber of tales have developed; sheis seeking the body of a child buriedthere is the most frequent.Clearly shrieking pits are firmlyestablished legends in this area;perhaps they are no more than thesound of a vixen calling. But there isno doubt, even during the brightestwarmest day, the Shrieking Pit atHungry Hill is always a cool, slightlymysterious place. The anniversary of Esmeralda’sdisappearance was at midnight on 24February. Did you hear anything?

AlwaysBrilliantHaving reported on both the dressrehearsals and the shows theMundesley Panto has always been adelight to review.Since retiring from running the CrabLine I have been signed up in thelast few weeks to take part in thisyear’s show Goldilocks, The Blond,The Bears & The Bees. The week of Feb 14th to 18thinvolved a great deal of goodhealthy fun under the direction ofTracey Loftus.Despite notdisplaying, what I havealwaysclaimed tobe the bestlegs inMundesleyas lead boy,Tracey’stalents asthe Producerare withoutdoubt marvellous. It is a bit of a family affair, asTracey’s mum, husband and Son(Anthony) who is cast as Tomtom(Goldilock’s beau) are also in theshow.

The whole cast are such a greatteam, and with the exception ofmyself, are so on the ball and adelight to work alongside. I had noidea just how much work is involvedin pulling a show off and achievingsuch a success that it is and has beenfor now many years. One can not mention everyone byname, but I would like to say thatPaul Reynolds is always a true Star.with Neil Ellson as Ray.

Whether as the Producer, Dame or asa taxi driver for Elite Taxis, Paul is acomplete star in the community thatis Mundesley.

Paul can be held responsible for theopening film in the show wherenumerous locals are shown runningaround the village holding theOlympic torch looking like a completebunch of idiots.I hope that despite getting in the wayand making the tea, Tracey willpromote me a little into next year’sshow.Talking to several good people afterthe show on Saturday the 18th I wasassured that everyone enjoyed theshow almost as much as the cast andsupporters did and the MundesleyLifeboat did well from one of its fundraising events this year.By the way the party, after the lastshow was a wonderful event as wellwhich involved numerous silly awardsbeing handed out.

Philip KeddellThe editor would like to thank Philip forthis and Paul Damen for the photos

these pieces into anything resemblinga rooster.”He takes her hands and says,“Secondly, I wantyou to relax. Let’shave a nice cup of tea and then,” hesaid with a deepsigh.................“Let’s put all the cornflakes back in the box.”

It’s the finalcountdown!Sport Relief set to hit CromerThe Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile inCromer is just a few days away andSunday 25th March is set to be anunforgettable day. Loads of localpeople have already signed up, butthere’s still time to bag your place!Don’t miss this opportunity to be partof something amazing – enter theMile at www.sportrelief.com.Setting off from Cromer Pier at 9:30and 10:00 am the Cromer Mile will

pass through/ take in the sights ofCromer and is set to be an incredibleevent. All the money raised by thepublic will help people livingunimaginably tough lives right hereon our doorstep, across the rest ofthe UK and in some of the world’spoorest countries.

Phil Harris said: “The Cromer Mile isset to be an amazing event. It’sfantastic that so many people ofCromer are gathering together toshow their support for Sport Relief2012. But we want this to bethe best Sainsbury’s SportRelief Mile yet – so raiseyour game, enter theCromer Mile today and jointhe rest of the nation toraise plenty of cash for anincredible cause!”Participants can choose theirown distance, from 1, 3 or 6miles, and can complete it inany way they fancy. Fromteeny tots with their mumsand dads, to super sprintersup against the clock, there’ssomething for everyone onthe big day.Sport Relief has a uniquehistory of dedicated peopledoing extraordinary things togo the extra mile. LastSeptember, David Walliamsstarted Sport Relief off withan epic splash when he completedthe BT Sport Relief Challenge:Walliams vs The Thames. Despitebattling a nasty bacterial bug and

bitingly cold water, David swam astaggering 140 miles, and has so farraised over £1million for Sport Relief. And there’ll be even more amazingcelebrity challenges to get the wholenation geared up for the Sport ReliefWeekend on Friday 23rd to Sunday25th March 2012.

Enter the Sainsbury’s Sport ReliefMile now at www.sportrelief.com.I met with Scott Eastwood (pictured)who as you can see, is ready andeager to take part. Scott is a Cromer

Town Councillor – and on the staff ofKingswood Centre for young peoplein Overstrand. We talked about whyhe is involved with this event.Firstly, he is running to support, boost and promote Sports Relief, acharity of which he has personalexperience – and which doesfabulous work both nationally andinternationally. He also feels stronglythat it is also part of hisresponsibilities as a Town Councillor, not least since the Council, in theshape of Councillor Philip Harris andthe Clerk Julie Chance, is organisingthe Cromer event.Scott has been getting in a bit oftraining, both running and swimming, since, by his own admission he is notthe fittest of men, and reckons thatthe last time he ran was probablyafter an ice cream van when he was10 years old! Even so, he is eager tofollow in the footsteps of Prince Harryand Usain Bolt earlier this month inJamaica – though I personally am nottotally convinced by the posepictured.

As you canimagine, choosing thewinner was problematic! Here at Crabline Towerswe approachedeveryone we knew tohelp us out with ourchoices. We were leftwith a seemingly

insoluble quandary. Every time weasked someone for their opinion, another would come along andcontradict it. Finally we found agroup of 3 ladies at the Sticky Earthcoffee shop in Church Street and thusa winner was found!

Pressure for aCromer Skate ParkOn a wet and windy Monday night, over 50 young people and parentsrallied together outside Cromer towncouncil offices. Their aim was tomake themselves known as ageneration of young people that wanta Skate park here in Cromer.Nationally, young people have nothad a good press lately, but theseyoung people were a credit tothemselves as they patiently endureda town council meeting, manylistening in from the corridor outsidethe chamber as they waited for theiropportunity to be able speak. It was a strange scene as placards, reading ‘Skate park issue will not goaway ‘ and ‘Give youth a voice’,surrounded the town councillors asthey discussed matters that were lessexciting to the young people. Thenan opportunity came to speak.Andrew Robertshaw, who co -coordinated the demonstration spokeof the young people being let downby people not addressing the need ofa Skate park here in Cromer. Ispoke also about the provision foryoung people in many other townsand villages but not here in Cromer. Ialso outlined what an asset a Skate

park can be for Cromer and howNorth Lodge Park is the obvious site.A parent of one of the young people

spoke of how happy she was that herson was taking to an active sport outwith friends and was not sat at homeplaying computer games.Due to town council meetingprocedure, councillors just sat andlistened. Nonetheless, the youngpeople’s voice has been heard in thistown and they will continue to SkateNorth Lodge Park and will continue tocause a stir until their hopes of apermanent skate park have beenfulfilled.
