The Crafty Ol’ Broads are Here!

Sisters Jane Wells and Linda Johnson are award winning quilters who love

every aspect of quilting, and just happen to be crafty, old and broad. They

started designing their own patterns in 2001, dreaming up new patterns

while non-quilters were sleeping. They then started the Crafty Ol’ Broad pat-

tern company and imported hand-woven cotton Guatemalan fabric to share

with other quilters.

In 2005 they began teaching and lecturing as a team. They are passionate

about sharing their knowledge and love of quilting through their many clas-

ses and lectures where they introduce quilters of all levels to their unique

patterns and quilting style.

Their quilts have placed well in shows and contests both locally and nation-

ally where they have been published by The Museum of American Quilters

Society in a couple international “New Quilts from an Old Favorite” contests.

Their 1st book, Beyond the Block, published by AQS in 2008 has been a joy,

and their second book, Cuddle Snuggly Quilts was released in October,

2010. These books are now out of print, but are available as e-books. Their

newest patterns will soon be available through AQS. “Life is good!"

Some Q&A with your QGI Programs Team:

What sparked your interest in quilting?

We were awestruck by the creative and beautiful art quilts we saw at quilt

shows.

How would you describe your sewing space and are there challenges?

We both have dedicated sewing rooms, filled with natural sunlight, 7-foot

high design walls, extra-large sewing tables (enough room for our bees to

meet), and storage. The challenge is not enough storage, so clutter happens

while we're not looking.

What is the worst mistake you ever made in quilting?

Linda had to rip out a large portion of quilting because her brown bobbin

thread showed on the light colored borders that were quilted with white

thread. Jane is still waiting for her worst mistake; because all her boo-boos

are on purpose.

What is it like to work with your sister?

We love working together, feeding off of each other’s creativity. Our friend-

ship and support are priceless. We often email pictures of our work in pro-

gress to each other for opinions. Teaching together is especially great, we

each have our favorite parts; and we both love the students.

President’s Message for March

Thirty days hath September, April, June, and No-

vember. All the rest have 31, except for—January

and February, which each has 90!

That’s the way I would finish that rhyme when I

was younger. I grew up in upstate New York and

we had snow and cold and no holidays during Jan-

uary and February, and often March (we did have

a spring break of a few days in April). I really

looked forward to snow days.

Now we are in March and know that spring is coming soon.

We have three places and two days to get together and celebrate National

Quilting Day. You will find information about them elsewhere in the news-

letter. (see page 6)

The program committee has done a great job of giving us good programs

and workshops. Now you have to choose which workshops to sign up for—

at least I have to choose; I don’t think I can do them all. Isn’t it wonderful

to have all these quilting things to choose from?

Heads up for the July meeting: We will be having a garage sale. So start

going through all your stash and supplies. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll have

enough to give donations to the Peony Shop next year.

Thanks for being part of the guild.

Triple Irish Chain pieced Amish quilt c. 1920

This quilt, made by an unknown Amish

quiltmaker in Lagrange, Indiana, is 100 years

old this year! It’s dated 1916 in the quilting in

the center of one side of the burgundy inner

border. This is a pieced quilt in the Triple Irish

chain pattern. The solid blocks are quilted with

a tulip design using beige thread. The chains

are quilted in an uneven grid with black or beige

thread. The grid extends into the maroon inner

border. The outer border is quilted with a

discontinuous cable of six strands quilted with

dark blue or beige thread through a thin batt.

The quilting stitches measure an average of

nine to the inch. The front is wrapped to the

back as binding and finished with a machine

stitch. The dark backing, originally colored

either navy or black, is composed of three strips

of cotton sateen.

NEWS FROM QGIN

February QGIN welcomed the Back Door’s Teri Dougherty and Linda Hale. Though delayed by a flat tire, the two were deter-mined to show us ‘Quilting Big and Small’ and that they did. 105 attendees enjoyed the truck show of current happenings at the shop.

Our color time looked at RED – appropriate for February! Al-most all wore RED! We had a special show and tell of mono-chromatic, neutral and achromatic quilts. Thanks to all who brought in quilts. We saw that such quilts are anything but bor-ing!!!

February Minutes and Stats (thanks to Shari Harrison!):

There were 102 members (1 new member) and 3 visitors welcomed by Margaret Duke and her hospitality team. $104.57 was donated to OPPC as a thank you for let-ting us meet in such a terrific space.

A quilt made by Amy Koeneman and quilted by Kathy Yull was shown. The quilt has been donated to OPPC as a thank you for using the space.

Six announcements were made.

February birthdays were honored with a rousing quick paced Happy Birthday sung as the honorees stood. Happy Birthday, Quilters!

The block of the month was shown for RED with the same color placement as last month’s BLUE.

Nancy Jo Clapp and Ann Slabaugh gave bobbles tied with RED yarn for 14 Show and Tell projects.

Theresa Cantwell awarded five door prizes. Tommi Derado made the Mini Wallet prizes herself! Thanks, Tommi!!

Nancy Jo Clapp’s reading of the RED poem from the book Hailstones and Halibut Bones by Mary O’Neill was the perfect close to our meeting. Thanks, Nancy Jo!

Coming in March:

One of our newer members, the VERY talented Alice Ridge, will present a Trunk Show, ‘Quilts Around the World’.

Our color for the month is YELLOW. Everyone is encour-aged to wear YELLOW to the meeting!

******In case the previous sentence doesn’t show up on your B&W version , it is YELLOW! ***

The special show and tell will be direct complement quilts (colors directly across from each other on the col-or wheel). This won’t take the place of our regular show and tell and there will be no bobbles given for this special show and tell.

Bring your folders and Ziploc bags to put in the fabric swatch and color fact sheet.

NEWS FROM QGI-SOUTH

(formerly known as OTLB)

Out To Lunch Bunch, newly renamed QGIS had

their first meeting on January 28th at Friedens

United Church of Christ which is a new location for

our meetings.

Sindy Howard reported that there were 63 mem-

bers present and one new member.

Our Block of the Month gal, Karen Nealis told us

the BOM for February is to be a red work block of

you choice.

As usual show and tell was wonderful. Please keep

the show and tell coming!

Our program speaker was Rita Fishel of Creations

Sew Clever in Chillicothe, OH, who had some Crea-

tive Grid rulers to show us along with a trunk show

of the wonderful creations that could be made

with the rulers.

We are still in need of a secretary for QGIS. Please

consider stepping out and volunteering for QGIS. If

you are interested please contact Ann Petrie.

Email address is in the pink membership roster.

Our next meeting will be February 25th. Our speak-

QUILTER’S QUEST

Last year a few of us took a whirl wind trip to

Chicago and guess where we wound up –

would you believe a quilt shop (or two or

three)?

Quilter’s Quest located at 7440-M Woodward

Avenue, Woodridge, opened on June 1, 2013

with a beginning inventory of 1,000 bolts in

5,409 square feet. Things have gone very well

and they now have an inventory of 7,000 bolts!!

There is a great selection of batiks, orientals,

blenders and Minkie as well as a lot of patterns

and notions. There are great samples reflecting

all of their fabrics and patterns.

Both Janome and Bernina sewing machines

are sold here. They were named the rookie

dealer of the year by Bernina. They also carry

Koala furniture.

Lots of classes are offered and the instructors

are well paid. There is a Featherweight teacher

who is also a quilt appraiser. Bob Cornella the

shop owner aka Longarm Bob is a prolific lon-

garm quilter and 1,000+ quilts a year are fin-

ished on the two longarms.

There is even a man’s corner with comfortable

chairs and a television that features the sports

channel. Bob said that the shop offers quality

products and good customer service. One neat

addition to the shop is Kuy, the shop dog, who

is a Bernese Mountain Dog.

If you get up to Chicago this is one shop that

you should definitely visit.

National Quilting Day/Days/Month submitted by Irmalou Schmucker and Margaret Duke.

We never know what the month of March may bring. Snow, ice, chilly winds, balmy breezes? But one thing we can be certain of is that it is a

month to celebrate quilting and National Quilt Day on March 19. This year QGI is offering three Quilt-Ins in three different locations in the city.

We hope you will participate in one or more of them. At Quilt-In we make quilts to give to those individuals in need of some extra warmth

and cheer. Isn’t that a great way to celebrate? So choose your date, round up your sewing supplies – sewing machine, scissors, needles,

etc. for whatever task you want to work on, and bring a dish to share for lunch. Come for all day or part of the day. Each Quilt-In starts at

9:00am and by 3:00pm we will be starting to clean up and be out of the building by 4:00pm. Each Quilt-In will have a potluck lunch at noon.

March 12, 2016 St. Augustine Home, Little Sister of the Poor 2345 West 86th. Street Indianapolis, IN On this day we will be sandwiching , sewing, birthing, and tying quilts – the complete process. Contact: Nancy Jo Clapp 283-3021 March 19, 2016 Irvington United Methodist Church 30 Audubon Rd. Enter door towards east side and go up a half flight of stairs to the parlor. On this day there will be a choice of sandwiching smaller quilts, tying quilts, or making pillowcases. Contact: Dallas Reed 363-4116 March 19, 2016 Friedens United Church of Christ 8300 S. 2017 Quilt Show Update

On February 7 a group of 15 guild members met to begin planning for the 2017 Quilt Show. Primary focus was on selecting a

theme for the show, choosing a pattern for the Opportunity Quilt, ideas for the Challenge Quilts and the design of the show logo.

The group has narrowed down the list of themes and patterns and expects to make final decisions on these matters at the April

10 meeting.

Members were also asked for their ideas for new/additional “events” that might be held at the show. Some suggestions were:

Special Exhibits (display of Past President’s Quilts, display a group of Hexagon quilts/wall hangings, traveling quilt exhibit such as

the Hoffman Challenge Quilts, etc.), hold demonstrations, invite a lecturer, a consignment shop for the sale of member quilts,

more vendors, etc. Melissa and Maureen contacted Westfield School about expanding our show into the gymnasium which would

allow space for the above ideas and to display more guild member quilts. If these ideas are to become a reality, and to justify the

additional costs, we recognize the need to attract additional visitors to the show, and a critical need for more volunteers. The

committee currently has the following vacant positions:

Challenge Quilt

Food Court

Peony Shoppe

Mystery Bags

Publicity

Treasure Baskets

Quilt Auctions

Signage

The next committee meeting is Sunday, April 10, 2-4pm, at Maureen Weflen’s home (3247 Autumn Ash Dr., Zionsville, IN

46077). We welcome your ideas whether you present them at a meeting, send us an email, or give us a call. Join the FUN!

Block of the Month update

Mother once said, “many hands make light work” and it is so true. Congrats to all on a successful first Block of

the Month for this year. One hundred twenty two finished blocks were turned in which should be enough to

make at least two twin size quilts for charity. Keep up the good work. We will be alternating between quilts for

children and Quilts of Valor most of the year with only a couple of exceptions. Let’s make a dent in that stash of

yours. If by chance you don’t have a specific type of fabric, check at our meetings for fabric scraps.
