• If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We’re glad you’re here!

• Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Chapter House Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service.

Welcome to Grace CathedralWelcome to this sacred place where we are reimagining church with courage, joy and wonder.

Every year we choose a theme to help us explore new ideas and to listen for God’s calling. In 2019 our theme is the Year of the Body. Our body is the way we meet the world and the world meets us. Although we share much that is in common, our bodies are each unique and particular, and every body is worthy of respect. We believe that God participated in the world through a body.

So we will be examining how we care for bodies, how we treat different kinds of bodies and how we are part of the earth’s body. This year we will dance together, eat together and study

what it means for Christians to understand the church as the Body of Christ.

We invite you to be part of this body, this joyful community, even if your visit is short. How is God inviting you to be more truly alive today? What are our bodies saying to us?

May God bless you in this holy place!

– The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral

Welcome to Grace Cathedral

about today’s readingsActs 2:1-21; Psalm 104:25-35, 37b; Romans 8:14-17; John 14:8-17, (25-27)Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet

God wants to be heard. How do we listen for the Spirit of truth in our lives, as we recount the Pentecost story? The tongues that give each listener a tale in their own language strongly affirm that we don’t need to be uniform in our culture and beliefs to be meaningfully connected to God. Giving thanks for the glory of diversity, how do we amplify our own powers of listening, to hear the voices that haven’t been easy for us to understand? We baptize children today that we pray will have a long life learning to speak truly and live authentically, to grow in both understanding and in love towards all things. They’ll each have their special way of learning, and talking, and listening, and as parents and caretakers, we’ll learn through their learning. We’re also celebrating our newly minted Archdeacon, the Ven. Canon Nina Pickerrell, who has taught us what it looks like when a powerful and compassionate woman speaks her truth, listens with love, and serves with generosity and respect across all boundaries. Rejoice! We don’t need a translator when we’re hearing about God’s redeeming, life-giving power. With courage and honesty, tell your story in your own mother tongue, while opening your ears to the tales of each other. This gathering is about to get lit.

Carol James has been part of the cathedral community for over a decade. She has served as a co-mentor in the Education Ministry (EfM) program. She currently leads the evening prayer providers in the Jail Ministry and is a cathedral staff member.

Psalm 104: 25–32 The people remain seated. The choir sings the antiphon, then all repeat. John Renke

Antiphon Send forth your spi-rit, O Lord, and re - new the face of the earth. Choir O Lord, how manifold are your works! *

in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.

All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.

All Send forth your spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth. You give it to them; they gather it; *

you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

All Send forth your spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth.

Then the Bishop asks the following questions of the candidates who can speak for themselves, and of parents and godparents who speak on behalf of the infants and younger children

Question Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God?

Answer I renounce them. Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the

creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God?

I renounce them.

Question Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? Answer I do. Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? I do. Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? I do.

The Baptismal Covenant

Bishop Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father?

People I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Bishop Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Bishop Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Bishop Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

People I will, with God’s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and

return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help.

Page 7: The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday - Grace Cathedral · 2019-06-09 · Our vision A spiritually alive world Our mission Reimagining church ith courage, oy and onder PHOTO: CREATIVE

5

Bishop Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? People I will, with God’s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?

I will, with God’s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity

of the earth and of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

Prayers for the Candidates

Bishop Let us now pray for these persons who are to receive the Sacrament of new birth. Deacon Deliver them, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. People Lord, hear our prayer. Open their hearts to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill them with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Keep them in the faith and communion of your holy Church.

Lord, hear our prayer. Teach them to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send them into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. Bishop Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your

Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen.

Thanksgiving over the Water

Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Bishop We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit

moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Baptism Each is presented by name to an assisting priest or deacon, who then pours water upon the candidate, saying

N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Bishop places a hand on each person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the Cross with Chrism, saying

N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.

After all have been baptized:

Bishop Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

Bishop Let us welcome the newly baptized. All We receive you into the household of God.

Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Peace

Bishop The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you. All may greet each other in the name of Christ.

An offering will be received for the ministries of Grace Cathedral. Thank you for your generosity.

Anthem T. Tertius Noble

Choir We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee, the Father, of an infinite majesty, thine adorable, true, and only Son, also the Holy Ghost the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting.

The Readings

Acts 2: 1–21

W hen the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And

suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

Romans 8: 14–14

A l l who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive

a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

John 14: 8–17, 25–27

P hil ip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said

to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.” “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

stewardship2019 Truth & Light Campaign

Our goals are to engage 500 households and to raise $1.1 million dollars in pledges this year. Today we have commitments from 472 households and just over $1 million in pledges. Our hope is

that everyone in our warm-hearted congregation will participate. We are close to our goals!

A generous donor recently stepped forward with a $10,000 dollar-for-dollar match for pledges made by June 15. This match applies to new pledges as well as any increase to a current pledge on file. Our fiscal year ends on June 30 and your new or renewed commitments in the coming weeks will help the cathedral meet its budget so we and the community can shine even brighter in the year ahead. Make a pledge at gracecathedral.org/donate. Pledge cards are at the back of the cathedral.
