We’ll continue our revival of an old tradition with a picnic at a convenient location. All Section Mem-
bers, their families, significant others, not so significant others, and prospective Section Members, e.g.,
students, are invited. The Section will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, veggie burgers, and soft
drinks. Please bring a side dish or a dessert to share — unfrosted walnut brownies would be great!
Those of us with kids are encouraged to bring the typical sports paraphernalia — soccer balls, footballs,
Frisbees, badminton sets, and softball equipment — anything that will keep the little buggers occupied!
Those with peculiar Ohio personalities will automatically haul out home-made corn hole sets. Feel free
to bring your favorite sports gear, but leave your firearms, bows & arrows, and lethal lawn darts from
the 1970s at home. For those of you who are single and want to see just how needy your most recent
match from eHarmony.com is, well, this event will do the trick!
For planning purposes, let us know if you’ll attend and the number in your party; contact Jenny Iskreno-
va-Ekiert at [email protected] . Steve will resume grilling duties this year, having completely re-
covered from the highly contagious fungal infection that led to cancellation of last year’s picnic.

Section Officers and Committee Chairs, and do some 3D printing! Bring your own CAD design, or

item to be printed and will provide snacks! And the Proto BuildBar makes a mean cappuccino!
So that we have an estimate for the snacks, please, let us know you if you are planning to attend by

The vacancies we need to fill this year are Chair-Elect and Secretary. Starting in 2018, the Sec-
retary will serve a two-year term, whereas the Chair-Elect will serve in that office in 2018, as
Chair in 2019, and as Immediate Past Chair in 2020, although, Immediate Past Chair is large-
ly an object of scorn. All officers serve on the Section’s Board of Directors.
To determine which office — Secretary or Chair-Elect — is the better fit for you, recite the follow-
ing statements, and see which one feels right.
“I already have boss; the last thing I need is another one! For once in my life, I’d like to give
the orders. You know, snap my fingers and watch some dumb schmucks jump.”
“Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it, but if something comes up, and I just don’t feel like it
… well, this is a volunteer position, right?”
If you can’t tell which statement is for which office, just flip a coin; it’ll all work out. Oh, and it
might be good if this weren’t the first Bulletin you’ve ever read!
Elections will be held this November, with the results announced at the Membership Meeting.
Please contact Jenny Iskrenova-Ekiert at [email protected] if you are interested in volun-
teering for either of these positions. Trust us; it’ll be fun!

This year’s theme is
Chemistry Rocks!
Exploring the Chemistry of Rocks
We'll celebrate NCW with two events this year:
The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery on Saturday, October 21st,
from 11 AM–4 PM, and Sunday, October 22nd, from noon–4 PM.
We’ll need quite a few volunteers for this event!
On Saturday, October 28th, from 1–4 PM, we’ll be at the Centerville
Library, where 5–8 volunteers are needed.
Contact Melinda Greer at (513) 936-7165 or at
[email protected] to volunteer for either of these events.

Patterson High School Chemistry Awards
Continuing a tradition that began in 1943, Dayton Section Members gathered at the University
of Dayton on May 25 to present the Patterson High School Chemistry Awards. Prof. Jeremy
Erb from UD’s Chemistry Department gave an inspiring account of his career path in chemis-
try, and his somewhat meandering journey to UD.
The nine students who scored highest on a standard chemistry exam were invited to write es-
says on a chemistry topic of their choosing. The essays were ranked by a committee formed
by the Dayton Section. Typically, the top three essayists are awarded prizes of $1000, $500
and $250 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. This year’s winners (and their teachers) are:
1st place: Vidushi Tripathi, The Wonders of Wastewater Treatment, Centerville
High School (Mrs. Summers)
2nd place: Rupal Jindal, Desalination: Reverse Osmosis, Centerville High School
(Mrs. Buddendeck)
3rd place: William Chan, Lead Contamination of Water Supply Systems, Beaver-
creek High School (Mrs. Rattan)
We offer our heartfelt congratulations to all of our Patterson Scholars!
Inaugural 3D Printing Event for Miami Valley Science Teachers
On May 6, the Section officers hosted our first ever 3D-printing event at Dayton’s own Proto
Build Bar in downtown Dayton! Using funds from a Local Section Innovative Project Grant, we
invited science teachers from the Dayton area to come out for a couple of hours of fun, stimu-
lating conversation, bagels and cookies, and, of course, coffee. Teachers also had the oppor-
tunity to 3D-print for free! Section Officers got to know local science teachers and show them
our appreciation.
If you are a science teacher and you missed the event, do not despair; another event will be
held September 30. See page 3 for details!

BUTANE GLYCINE PHOSPHATE
After a sumptuous lunch of spam, spam, spam, baked beans, and spam, the King arose from his luxuri-ously upholstered chair. Concomi-tantly, a distinctive, high-pitched tone, increasing in frequency and volume, rattled the chandelier crys-tals. As the eyes of the guests began to water, the crumb-sweeper whis-pered to the waiter, “Do you smell that?” The waiter replied, “You think I’m hard of smelling? Of course, I smell that!” Overhearing this banter, the headwaiter admonished them. “This must be the first time you are experiencing THE NOBLE GAS!

The president of a prestigious university is skeptical upon hearing his
daughter’s news: “I’m so happy, Daddy; I’m going to be married,” she ex-
claims. The president asks, “Who’s the lucky young man?” “Well, he’s an
Assistant Professor at the University,” the daughter explains, “but he’s very
ambitious. He’s applying for Assistant Dean!” The president sniffs, “An as-
