the dean’s letter to members

THE DEAN’S LETTER TO MEMBERS I suspect that all organists have at least one piece of music that you’ve started several times, but just have never really finished. Or perhaps you had to play it for a specific event and learned it well enough to do it justice – but never really got it to the point of it being “yours”. One such piece for me like this is Sowerby’s “Comes Autumn Time”. Colin Andrews played this piece so wonderfully on a recital just last week at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Bon Air. Maybe this is the year for me to finish this piece? We’ll see! Since we don’t have a scheduled meeting this month and the pandemic is not quite yet over, I’ll host an AGO Happy Hour on the patio at my house in Bon Air on Wednesday, October 20 at 5:30 PM. All members are invited! Just send me a quick note to let me know you’ll be coming at [email protected], and I’ll send you more details! Looking forward, on November 9, Joel Kumro, Landry Duvall, and Brent te Velde will present a “Useful Organ Repertoire” session at Trinity Lutheran Church. Also, don’t forget Clara Gerdes’ recital at River Road Church, Baptist on November 19. Finally, a huge thank you to all the performers, Tom Bailey, Daniel Banke, and Reveille UMC for making our Members’ Recital and Officer Installation a wonderful event (and my parents, Diane & Gregory Hayes, for their help!) Thank you as well to Chris Martin and Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church for hosting Colin Andrews’ Messiaen Lecture-Recital. Soli Deo Gloria! EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES Richmond Chapter, American Guild of Organists

Wednesday, September 8, 2021, via Zoom

Scott Hayes presented plans for chapter programs for 2021-2022. Kenna Payne presented Chapter Financial Statements through 8/31/21. The Auditors met with the Treasurer and completed a detailed review of the Chapter’s financial activity and concluded that everything was fully accounted for and there were no audit exceptions. Gary Kunde, Archivist, reported that the archiving project has stalled. He recommended finding a person to move the project from scanning to photographing and to design a more current database. The option of donating old records to one of the local museums will also be explored. Aaron Renninger reported that revision work is continuing with the Procedural Guide, and that several positions still need to be filled. The appointment of Aaron Renninger to Chairperson of the Communications Committee was accepted. Job descriptions of the vacant positions will be presented to the general membership.

CHAPTER LIFE UPDATES If you have news to share, please contact Chapter Life Coordinator Donald Traser at [email protected] or call at 804-644-0888.

We extend our sympathy to the family of William H. (Bill) Brown, Sr. (pictured at left), who died on November 29, 2020 (but only recently announced). Bill was the Richmond Chapter’s oldest living past dean, serving during 1967-68. He was organist/director at Trinity United Methodist Church from 1965 to 1990, at which time he moved to Kokomo, Indiana. Returning to Richmond upon retirement, Bill took a similar position at Ginter Park Baptist Church on an interim basis in 2006, then on a regular basis from 2007 to 2012. A memorial service was held for him at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church on September 18. We also express our sympathy to Bill Balz, whose brother, Edward A. Balz, III, died on September 20. A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Friday, October 8 at 11 a.m. Congratulations to Ryan Tibbetts, our estimable newsletter editor, for successfully completing the AGO Colleague

certification this year, reported in the October issue of The American Organist. In transitions, Wayne Hare, longtime organist at Saint Bartholomew’s Church, has left that position for employment in Kilmarnock. We extend our best wishes to him. Chapter member Dr. James Kosnik played a joint recital with pianist Michael Serio at SUNY University at Buffalo on September 18. Look for more news of our new members next month.

SAINT BEDE CHURCH, WILLIAMSBURG On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at 12:00 PM, Saint Bede Catholic Church (3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg), presents a recital by Joel S. Kumro, Choirmaster and Organist at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond, VA, as part of the Trinity Organ Concert series. The recital will present a varied program from Bach’s predecessors, Bach himself, and several composers who carried on his traditions. The program also will feature Mendelssohn’s third organ sonata and Bruhns’ Praeludium in E minor. This free concert will be available both in-person in the Nave and online at www.facebook.com/MusicofSaintBede. For more information, call (757) 229-3631, or visit www.bedeva.org/concerts.

SAINT BENEDICT CATHOLIC CHURCH

On Sunday, October 24 at 7:00 PM at Saint Benedict Catholic Church (300 N Sheppard St., Richmond), Saint Benedict Music Series will host a concert performed by the Wren Masters. The program begins and ends with works by Georg Philipp Telemann, Bach’s contemporary and friend. In between those two works comes a set of pieces ‘from the Highlands’—baroque music from Scotland whose traces can still be found in traditional music of the Appalachians. Another set of baroque pieces imitates birds and other animals. The Wren Masters are an early music quartet, playing renaissance and baroque music on period instruments. Hailed by The Washington Post for their "crisp ensemble, mellowness, and admirable stylistic awareness," the four members are performing artist faculty of the College of William & Mary, playing harpsichord, baroque violin, viola da gamba / baroque cello, and recorder. Admission is free; an offering will be taken up to support the music series. For more information, please contact Joel S. Kumro, Choirmaster and Organist at 804-254-8810x112 or [email protected]

SAINT MARY’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, GOOCHLAND

On Sunday, October 31 at 4:30 PM, the Choir of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (12291 River Road, Richmond), under the direction of Dr. Ryan Tibbetts, will offer a service of Choral Evensong. Repertoire will include the Collegium Regale Evening Canticles of Herbert Howells, a newly-composed Preces and Responses by Dr. Tibbetts, as well as music of Tallis and Caroline Shaw. A 4:00 PM prelude recital by Dr. Tibbetts will include music by Bach (you can probably guess the piece!), Mendelssohn, and Brenda Portman. All are welcome.
