The total cost of an exam is $85 (DHS is not charging the additional $9 for processing).  Students should bring a $15 check to NANCY SMITH in the AD's office for every AP exam they want to take this spring. This will allow us to order the test(s) and reserve their testing slot.

Deering senior Samatra Sam is raising money for the Dempsey Challenge for

cancer research as her Senior Capstone. Please help her meet her fundraising goals by contributing to her GoFundMe page, here

"The Dempsey center provides cancer patients with a source of reassurance and research. Money raised and donated to the center allows a cancer patient to explore new abilities to kill off cancer, while providing support to families. By June, I hope to participate in the Dempsey challenge with a team of college students. All money raised goes to the center." -- Samatra Sam

Please Support the Deering's Award Winning SeaPerch Team

SeaPerch is an underwater remote operated vehicle originally designed by MIT. The SeaPerch

STEM club meets regularly to build a remote operated vehicle. During the process students

follow an established curriculum to build the ROV and then test it in a pool. Students also

have the opportunity to participate in the SeaPerch Challenge. Some students will reengineer

their ROVs for the competition. Events at the Challenge include:

● Vehicle performance - how well it can move through obstacle courses and perform tasks

● Innovative design ● Engineering Notebook

Please support the team by donating to this GoFundMe link and/or sharing it with family and friends.

● Reminder: The University of Maine is taking registration for its popular Consider Engineering Summer Program. This four-day summer intensive is offered 3 separate weeks in the month of July. “If you are a high school junior who is an excellent math and science student, we would like to interest you in a unique summer experience designed to help you expand your academic ability and explore the option of studying engineering when you go to college.” The full cost of this program is covered by The University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation. For more details about the program, download the program brochure or pick one up outside of room 303. Deadline: April 22, 2019. Deering students have found this to be a valuable, worthwhile experience.

● The Keller BLOOM Program is accepting applications for its Ocean Science Research Experience for Maine High School Juniors. The 30th annual Keller BLOOM Program runs May 19th -24th at the Bigelow Lab in East Boothbay, Maine. The program provides Maine students interested in science the opportunity to work alongside professional researchers, exploring the biological, chemical and geological characteristics of the local marine environment through field and laboratory work. Program participants are immersed in a research environment and, through engagement in field sampling and laboratory activities, including data collection, synthesis and analysis, learn what a career as a scientist involves. Sixteen students will be selected to participate. Bigelow Laboratory will provide room and board under chaperoned conditions. There is no cost to participate in the program. Deadline to apply is April 15, 2019.

● UNH is hosting several summer Tech Camp programs on their Durham, NH campus. They offer partial and full scholarships to those in need of financial assistance.

 DHS Guidance News

April 8, 2019  ⇨ If you are a parent of a 12th grader who could use some extra $ for college next year,

the DEERING SCHOLARSHIP SURVEY IS NOW OPEN!

This is a friendly reminder from Guidance that during Deering Coaching this Wednesday

(4/10), your senior child will be informed that the Scholarship Survey is available to complete

Page 8: The Deering Weekly Update - Home - Deering High School

in their Naviance account NOW. Seniors interested in attaining local Portland area and Maine

State scholarships awarded during Deering’s Senior Last Assembly on May 31st will have a

significantly better shot at garnering one of these scholarships by completing the survey.

The directions to accessing and completing the Scholarship Survey are on the Home page of

your child’s Naviance account. The Scholarship Survey will be open from now until May 1st.

After May 1st it will no longer be available to complete. Students who may have forgotten

their username and password to their Naviance account and want to complete the survey can

see Ms. Adams in Guidance for that access.

The Deering Senior Last Assembly Scholarship Committee uses the valuable information

students give us in this survey to award scholarships that often have specific criteria that can

only be gleaned by completion of the survey questions. All seniors should complete it! There

is a wide variety of criteria that Deering students can qualify for in order to win an award.

Here are some examples of criteria that students have gotten awards for in past Senior Last

Assembly celebrations (this is surely not an exhaustive list!): academic merit, community or

school service, major of study in college, artistic and/or athletic talents, a huge propensity for

awesome kindness shown to others, child of a teacher, etc. . . You get the picture.

MAKE SURE YOUR SENIOR CHILD FILLS IT OUT!

WESTPOINT GRADUATE HERE AT DEERING TO TALK TO 9-11th GRADERS

Page 9: The Deering Weekly Update - Home - Deering High School

Is your child wondering about what it takes to make it into a prestigious U.S. Military Academy? Deering is pleased to host Westpoint graduate, Raphael Waruinge on Monday, April 22nd at 2pm. Lt. Waruinge will be talking to Deering High students in grades 9-11 about the amazing opportunities not only at Westpoint but in all branches of the US Military Academies. Men and women who attain admission into any of the US Military Academies whether it is Westpoint (U.S Army), the US Naval Academy, the US Coast Guard Academy, the US Air Force Academy, or the US Merchant Marine Academy attain their education at these academies for free . Admission requirements for these academies is highly selective (academically and physically) but for students who thrive on academic rigor and physical challenge, the rewards are great. If your child wants to know more- simply show up in Guidance on 4/22 at 2pm.  ⇨ In light of the current high profile college admissions scandal, one can read hundreds of media perspectives on how the rich and famous are utilizing reprehensible means to get their children into prestigious colleges and universities. Sadly the practice isn’t new. One of the best articles we’ve read on the subject comes from Lynn O’Shaughnessy in a recent blog for The College Solution. Ms. O’Shaughnessy is a long time journalist and a former college columnist for CBS Moneywatch and the US News & World Report. Take a look and let us know what you think: http://www.thecollegesolution.com/college-admission-scandal-symptom-of-a-larger-proble

⇨ Please make sure your child has scheduled a Junior Meeting with their Guidance Counselor before they leave for the summer. Guidance Counselors are trying to meet with all juniors this semester to discuss their hopes, dreams, and post-DHS plans so we can support them in the next steps to achieving their college , career, and/or military service goals. Many juniors have already met with their counselor; but there are still a good number that have yet to schedule that important meeting. What do Counselors cover in the Junior Meeting with your child? Each meeting is different because each student has unique hopes and dreams for their life after Deering High School; however some typical things discussed are:

Career Interests, College Majors and their Connections to Careers, Local Job Shadows, Info about Military Service and how to access a recruiter, Gap Year Options, Current HS Courses and their Important Connection to a Student’s Post-HS Goals, How to Create a

Solid and Appropriate College List in Preparation to Apply in the Senior Year, and so much more!

The DHS Counselors welcome parents who want to join their child in the Junior Interview. Some parents want to be part of the conversation and others leave it up to their child-either way works. What is important is that your 11th grader does it before leaving Deering for the

summer! Junior Meetings can be scheduled with Guidance Secretary, Gerri Adams (874-8264) because she has the calendar for Ms. Moore, Ms. Alexis, Ms Heselton, and Mr. Cherry.

Parents of 9th, 10th and especially 11th graders-NOW is the time to think about using the upcoming April school break to visit college campuses!!! Start talking with your child about which schools may be cool ones to check out! Take a gander at the following article from Princeton Review on 6 Tips for Contacting Colleges and How to Make the Most of College Visits: https://www.princetonreview.com/college-advice/college-visits  ⇨ CURRENT DHS 10TH AND 11TH GRADERS INTERESTED IN CHECKING OUT THE COOL PROGRAMS AT PORTLAND ARTS & TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL (PATHS) SHOULD SEE THEIR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR TO SCHEDULE A TOUR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BEFORE POPULAR PROGRAMS FILL UP FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR! ⇨ 2019 COLLEGE ADMISSIONS, SAT TESTING DATES, FINANCIAL AID EVENTS, SCHOLARSHIP INFO, and CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

**Seniors should let their Guidance Counselor know what colleges/universities to date they

have been accepted, waitlisted or denied so we can keep a confidential record. In May, college-bound seniors will need to let us know which college/university they plan to attend in

fall 2019 so we can send that institution your child’s final Deering transcript of grades.
