Last month, Indiana 811participated in community EarthDay events, including theNorthwest Indiana Earth DayCelebration on April 16 inValparaiso, and Earth DayIndiana on April 23 inIndianapolis. Indiana 811exhibited at the events andtaught homeowners theimportance of calling 811 beforebeginning their digging projects.

Indiana 811 sponsors severalminor league baseball programsthroughout the state to informresidents about safe digging.Indiana 811 is a sponsor of theIndianapolis Indians' Triple PlayLittle League Program, whichfunds the growth anddevelopment of youth baseball inIndiana. Indiana 811 Teaches Safe Digging inFarming CommunitiesThis month, Indiana 811 participated in the Decatur , Ind. At the event, Indiana811 shared the safe digging message with more than 100 fourth

Emergency Responders Promote SafeDigging in their Communities

Throughout the spring, Indiana 811, Vectren and NIPSCO askedemergency responders across the state to show their support ofNational Safe Digging Month and promote the importance of safety intheir communities by posting “call before you dig” messages. Theannual emergency responder program had a very successfulshowing, with more than 70 organizations posting messages on thesigns outside their facilities, on their Facebook pages or by hanging abanner promoting safe digging. All participating organizations willreceive a $50 donation and will be entered into a grand prize drawingfor a $1,000 donation. The donations are made possible through thesupport of Vectren and NIPSCO.

Indiana 811 in the NewsThroughout April, Indiana 81 1 was spotlighted in television and onlinenews stories promoting National Safe Digging Month. Chuck Muller,Indiana 811's Director of Member and Public Relations, wasinterviewed on the program INSight on WPTA-TV (ABC 21) in FortWayne. You can watch Chuck's interview here. The interview servedas a timely reminder to residents to always call before digging thisspring.

Bringing the Safe Digging Message tothe Pump

In celebration of National Safe Digging Month, a new partnership wasformed to promote safe digging messages across southeast Michiganand in the Chicago area (Northwest Indiana). Customers at 88Speedway convenience stores in these markets were treated to avideo playing directly on the pump. The short educational videodemonstrates the importance of making a free call to 811 beforebeginning any digging project.

The project was the combined effort between Marathon Pipe LineLLC (MPL), Speedway LLC and Miss Dig – Michigan’s One CallCenter. “This was an incredible opportunity for us to partner with aregional one call center and leverage an existing communicationchannel in a new way,” said Raymond Price, MPL area manager inWoodhaven, Mich. “While filling up their tanks, customers are veryreceptive to educational videos that can entertain them while theywait.”

Price is on the Board of Directors for Miss Dig and sits on its PublicEducation Committee. It was his idea to explore the option of playingthe video at Speedway stores. “Both MPL and Speedway are wholly-
