Warm-Ups

Name the property illustrated by each:

1.  If 7*2 = 14, then 14 = 7*2

2.  8 + (3+9) = 8 + 12

3.  mnp = 1mnp

4.  (3/4)(4/3) = 1

5.  32 + 21 = 32 + 21

Distributive Property- The property that states that if you divide both side of an equation by the same nonzero number, the new equation will have the same solution. Symbols:  For any numbers a, b, c ,         a(b + c) = ab + acExample:  3(2 + 5) = 3*2 + 3*5 = 6 + 15 = 21

Page 5: The distributive property (1)

Distribute over addition:

Rewrite 5(7 + 2) using the Distributive Property.  Then evaluate.

Page 6: The distributive property (1)

Distribute over subtraction:

Rewrite (16 - 7)^3 using the Distributive Property.  Then evaluate.

Cars Ex.

The Morris family owns two cars.  In 1998, they drove the first car 18,000 miles and the second car 16,000 miles.  Use the info below to find the total cost of operating both cars.1985- 0.231990- 0.331995- 0.411998- 0.46 Find what the total cost of the Morris family operating two cars would have been in 1985, if they drove the same number of miles.
