Horsham pupils reach Raspberry Pi computing fi nal for the second year

St Mary's C of E school have made the National fi nals of the PA Con-sulting Raspberry PI competition for a second year running, only 1 of 3 primary schools nationally to do so.

The competition uses a small computer made by the Raspberry Pi foundation for a health project.

The 7 team members have created an exercise machine that sees the user hitting coloured pads attached to a wall when a colour is fl ashed up on a TFT attached screen, to fast pumping dance music.

By placing the pads further apart you increase the amount of exercise required in order to touch the pads in time. A scoring system built into the game helps to challenge the user to work faster and longer and

therefore gaining more exercise.Chair of Governors, Marcus Ty-

ler-Moore said: “This Governor led initiative sees a team from our school making the fi nals held at the Science Museum in London with judges such as Maggie Philbin (To-morrow's World) and Rory Cellan-Jones (BBC).

“We are all very proud of the ef-forts the 7 children have put into working on this project which has seen them using electronics, team work, coding, design, project man-agement and presentation skills.

“We wish them the best of luck for the fi nals which will be a fun packed day of workshops, a tour of the science museum, presenta-tion to the judges and then a fi nal awards ceremony.”

Sussex brewery raises the bar on fund raising

From cycling events to a music and beer festival, Sussex brewery Dark Star counted up the pennies from fundraisers held throughout last year, and has served up over £10,000 to local causes.

The Dark Star Foundation, which was established in 2013, aims to support causes in three key areas: provide funds to pubs to assist in their fundraising efforts; provide seed funding for tomorrow’s en-trepreneurs; issue funds to good causes and charities.

During the last year, funds have been continuously raised through the sale of certain lines in the brewery shop, at the number of large events such as Hopfest and ‘Spin Up In A Brewery’, and also through donations made by people attending the regular free brewery tours.

Those causes that received fund-ing were Partridge Green Players, Sussex Sailability, Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral

Palsy, PG Munchkins, Age UK Hor-sham, Cancer UK and Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre.

The Foundation Board, which consists of James Cuthbertson, Kerry Hartley, Greg Taylor, Licen-see and current UK ‘Fundraiser of the Year’ Sara Blunden along with Graham Lillywhite, are delighted with the result of the Foundation’s second year fundraising. James Cuthbertson, who is also a direc-tor at Dark Star Brewing Co. said: “The idea behind setting-up our own Foundation was to channel the generosity of those coming to visit the brewery or attending one of our events through the year, to-wards supporting good causes and I feel very proud to be a part of that process.” Adding: “Now the funds are distributed, we turn our atten-tion to this year and making sure we once again have a good-size pot of money to put towards those that need it. A word also for our volun-teers on the Foundation who make this possible through their support for events and assistance in mak-ing sure the right causes receive the funds.”

Funding Applications will open again in Sept 2015.

Adopt-a-Street launch recruits volunteers

Horsham District Council’s Adopt-a-Street initiative was given a boost last week when lo-cal volunteers and officers at-tended an event to officially launch the district wide litter picking scheme and encourage more volunteers to sign up.

The Adopt-a-Street initiative encourages residents to take extra care of their street or an area they

particularly value by volunteering to pick up the litter left by others. The initiative has already recruited over 400 local volunteers in the last two months.

Commenting on the Adopt-a-Street scheme at the launch event, Cabinet Member for the Environ-ment Cllr Andrew Baldwin said: “As a council we spend in the re-gion of £1 million a year picking up the litter dropped by members of the public. We know that as a dis-trict we are fortunate to have local communities who generally take pride in the appearance of their lo-cality but for those who want to go the extra mile and take more care of a particular area, this scheme is ideal. It is commendable that we have recruited so many of the dis-trict’s residents who are willing to volunteer to litter pick on a regular basis, it sets a sound example to the community.”

To support volunteers, the

council provides health and safe-ty training, advice to co-ordinate volunteers and equipment in the form of litter pickers, plastic bags, protective gloves and branded hi-viz jackets.

If you would like to make a dif-ference in your area or get a group of volunteers together, please email Horsham District Council at [email protected].

Alternatively, call our Adopt-a-Street Co-ordinator Karen Grisley for a chat about how you would like to help on 01403 739387 or 07989 442 376.

As part of the Adopt-a-Street initiative many parishes across the district are already holding local neighbourhood clean–up events throughout March and April 2015. For more details please go to the council’s websitehttp://w w w . h o r s h a m . g o v . u k / b i n s /adopt-a-street/parish-clean-up-events-2015.

New signage arrives in Horsham town centreHorsham District Council is in the final stages of introducing a new wayfinding scheme across strategic locations in Horsham town centre.

The scheme features new fin-gerposts, monoliths, and wall mounted signs showing items of historical significance in the town and directing residents and visitors to key areas of interest. These updated wayfinding fea-tures form part of the final phase of the West Street Enhancement Scheme which was initiated in 2013.

A brand new Peppa Pig themed physical activity programme for pre-schoolers entitled Move with Peppa will be coming to Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre from April 2015.

Developed by tumuv and Peppa Pig brand owners Entertainment One (eOne), Move with Peppa is an in-novative blend of storytelling, im-agination and physical activity that transports kids into the world of their favourite cartoon character where families can experience the fun and joy of learning to move.

The programme debuted in six UK leisure centres in January 2015. Due to popular demand, Move with Peppa is

now expanding into 24 new Places for People Leisure centres.

Move with Peppa is a 6-week pro-gramme made up of 45-minute sessions that are designed to build motivation, physical confi dence, co-ordination, balance and agility using stories from the award-winning epi-sodes. Aimed at 2-4 year olds, chil-dren in Horsham will be the fi rst to try the specially created Peppa Steppa dance routine, jump in custom made muddy puddles and play piggy in the middle with Peppa and George.

The course will run for 6 weeks at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre from Friday 17th April 2015. To book a place call 01403 211311.

Peppa pig inspires children to get active at Broadbridge Heath

Founder of tumuv, Holly Woodford said: “We are passionate about get-ting people of all ages moving. The physical activity provision for the under-fi ve age group is surprisingly limited, so we wanted to create a pro-gramme that would excite and inspire young children as they experience physical exercise. Children across the country have fallen in love with Peppa Pig, so how better to inspire younger generations to be active than through themed exercises.

“We will train and license Places for People Leisure staff to deliver 45 minute, progressive, activity sessions across a six week period to inspire and engage both parent and child. We are very excited to be working with our exclusive launch partner, Places for People Leisure.”

Glen Staite-Loveridge, Group Junior Activities Manager at Places for People Leisure said: “We have a strong commitment to providing a range of activities for children at our leisure centres to enjoy physical ex-ercise and are delighted to be working with tumuv to pioneer the new pro-gramme. We look forward to launch-ing the programme in April and en-couraging young children to not only enjoy physical activity at a young age but adopt it as a lifelong hobby.”

Horsham Community Responders who are volunteers for the Ambu-lance Service and respond to 999 calls within their local area have reached a milestone by responding to over 5000 emergency 999 calls within the Horsham area since be-ing set up in January 2007.

The 14 strong team who have team members based within Hor-sham, Mannings Heath, Warnham and who are helping set up a team within Rudgwick, are trained volun-teers working with South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb).

The team were presented with certificates of achievement by Mur-ray Clark who is the community partnership lead of SECAmb.

Mr Clark said: “It was a fantastic achievement and the team made a valued contribution to Horsham and the surrounding villages in not only responding to emergency calls, but also educating the local com-munity in life saving skills.”

The team who respond to a vari-ety of calls often arrive before the Ambulance because they live and volunteer within their local com-munity have made this valuable contribution by attending variety of calls ranging from injured falls through to Cardiac Arrests.

Team Leader Marc Harrold said: “I am extremely proud of the team for reaching this milestone and it just shows the dedication of the members as they have put in a lot of

hours on standby, attending train-ing and fundraising as well as re-sponding to calls.”

It takes around 18 months to re-cruit and train each CFR and costs the scheme, which is a registered charity, nearly £2000 per volun-teer to train and equip them with a kit which includes an emergency response kit including a defibrilla-tor.

The team not only respond to 999 calls but also run the very suc-cessful British Heart Foundation

Heartstart Courses which trains local people free of charge how to treat life threatening conditions and how to use a defibrillator.

Horsham Community Respond-ers have been extremely fortunate to have been chosen as the Charity of the year for Sainsbury's (Horsh-am) which has been fundraising for us since last year. In cooperation with Horsham Rotary, they have also organised a Trolley dash raffle and tickets can be purchased at the store.

Specialist Italian wine shop, Hor-sham Enoteca has this week been refurbished to provide its retail wine and food to be eaten within the shop at the bar by way of a 'Cichetti bar'.

Horsham Enoteca are proud to serve fine wines straight from pro-ducers in Italy. They believe prove-nance to be a key aspect of quality and by buying directly from the producers can still be competitively priced.

Owner, Lisa Costello said: “We use smaller producers and we get wines

and foods you won't ordinarily find in other places.”

Horsham Enoteca sells a large va-riety of bottled wines, draught wines, cured meats, cheeses, olive oil, bal-samic vinegars, artisanal pasta, pasta sauces and taralli.

Lisa said: “We’re expanding the counter and we’ll be serving panini, cicchetti, which are little nibbles, cof-fee, and wine by the glass.

The new opening hours will be from 7am until 9pm Monday to Saturday

to serve traditional Italian breakfast through to a glass of wine and aperitif nibbles for people finishing work or pre-diners and theatre-goers”

The store will be open 8am to 4pm on Sunday.

The Horsham Enoteca is also proud to be hosting Horsham’s Piazza Italia wine trail. From March 28, you can collect a wine trail passport from the Enoteca and take a wine tour around town. Your completed passports can be entered into a prize draw.

Horsham Enoteca offers more than wine Horsham to host energy pop-up shop

Horsham is hosting an Energy Pop-up Shop. For six days only, energy experts will be on hand to provide independent practical advice on how to cut costs on en-ergy bills, give advice on switch-ing suppliers and ways to be more energy efficient at home. It’s free and could save you money.

The Energy Pop-up Shop will be open from Monday, March 23, to Saturday, March 28, 10am to 4pm.

Organised by Communities Mat-ter, in partnership with Horsham District Council and the Big Energy Saving Network, it will be held in Swan Walk Shopping Centre.

Councillor Claire Vickers, Cabi-net Member for Living and Working Communities from Horsham Dis-trict Council, said: “Together with our colleagues in Public Health we are investing £4,000 in this event. We remain dedicated to tackling the effects of fuel poverty. Regret-tably, it is often the most vulner-able in our community who suffer

and we are therefore really pleased to be supporting the district’s resi-dents by facilitating this event.”

The campaign to make a sig-nificant impact on reducing fuel poverty has been fully supported by the Big Energy Saving Network (BESN) and funded by DECC since March 2014. There are now sixteen BESN Champions across Kent and Sussex, whose main focus is do-ing outreach work on fuel poverty. And in just one year over £375,000 has been saved on people’s energy bills.

Ollie Pendered, Director of Com-munities Matter said: “We con-tinue to train volunteers to give energy bill checking advice. If you want to be more involved in your local community and you know a local group wanting to take part in this initiative, please get in touch and we will come and see you.”

The French defeat at Waterloo, on the evening of Sunday, June 18, 1815, drew to a close 23 years of war that began with the French Revolutionary Wars and continued with the Napoleonic.

The wars redefi ned Europe, and Britain did not escape untouched by the experience. The new exhibition ‘Waterloo: 100 Days,’ that opens on March 19, 2015, at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, explores the background to this most famous battle and the thrilling events that led to the fi nal defeat and exile of Napoleon Bona-parte.

Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo marked the end of the Emperor's fi -nal bid for power, the so-called '100 Days', and was the fi nal chapter in his remarkable career. This exhibi-tion explores the background to the battle, beginning with the French Revolution of 1789, and describes some of the key events and per-sonalities that led up to that day in June 1815. It also features many lo-cal stories, from life in Horsham at the time, when a popular ditty ran:

“Ridgick for riches, Green for poors,

Billingshurst for pretty girls, and Horsham for whores.”

Although the wars themselves

took place overseas, local militias and barracks of soldiers were com-mon sights across southern Eng-land, and for a time in the early 1800s Horsham too was a Barrack town – the soldiers’ encampment was where the Cricket fi eld is to-day. The revolutionary fervour un-leashed across the Channel by turns gripped and horrifi ed the British, and as the 1790s wore on, the gov-ernment became steadily more sus-picious of internal dissent. In the 1800s and 1810s, though, the fi gure of Napoleon was admired by some, and the struggle against tyranny and arbitrary government became a rallying cry to fi gures like the Warnham-born poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Horsham Museum is fortunate to have many original documents from the period including the plan of the barracks drawn in 1815 when the barracks were dismantled and sold. The exhibition will feature documents which illustrate how the town was dramatically aff ected by the soldiers, with accounts of cor-ruption, court marshals, trials for robbery, attempted murder, rape and causing aff ray. Using the Mu-seum’s collections the fl avour of the period will be given, through costume, books, prints, china and glassware.

‘Waterloo: 100 Days’ opens on 19 March and runs until 11 July 2015 at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. For further information please con-tact Jason Semmens, Curator.

Christ’s Hospital celebrates Duke of Edinburgh milestoneChrist’s Hospital’s Head Master, John Franklin, attended a VIP pres-entation at St James’s Palace at the start of term to receive a Certifi cate celebrating 50 years of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at the School.

He was accompanied by the School’s Duke of Edinburgh leader, Mike Overend, who was presented with a Long Service Certifi cate for supporting the Award for an out-standing 32 years.

The Certifi cates were presented by the DofE’s Regional Director for the South East, Christian Scott, in the presence of HRH Prince Edward KG GCVO. Just before the formal presen-tation, which took place on January 13, John Franklin and Mike Overend were formally introduced to the HRH

and given a guided tour of the palace. At the same ceremony, six former Christ’s Hospital pupils were also re-ceiving their Gold awards. This was a high number of recent leavers to get their Gold awards at one ceremony.

Mike Overend said: “Outside the classroom we want our pupils to challenge themselves to try new things, to develop talents they al-ready possess, but also to discover new ones. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provides a great framework for young people to do just that. The DofE is just one of the many co-cur-ricular activities available at Christ’s Hospital which help give pupils the skills and the confi dence that can ultimately make a diff erence to lives and communities.”

They say that fi rst impressions count and that certainly applies in the very best way to Horsham born Sue Tarrant, who has been welcoming visitors to children’s charity Action Medical Research for over 42 years.

On March 6, 2015, Sue was bid farewell by Paddington, the Hor-sham charity’s mascot, having also spent years helping to coordinate when Paddington appears to lend a helping hand at many Action fund-raising events.

Sue has seen a lot of change over the years since she joined the charity and she has had a number of responsibilities including sort-ing the post, typing, co-ordinating the collection boxes, inputting the payroll and writing thank you let-ters to donors. She has seen many people come and go and up until now has been the longest-serving staff member at the or-ganisation.

Sue has also seen the charity fund some amazing medi-cal breakthroughs, which since its in-ception, have in-cluded the in-t r o d u c t i o n of the fi rst polio vac-cines in the UK, helping develop the use of ul-

trasound in pregnancy, testing the early rubella vaccine and discover-ing the importance of taking folic acid before and during pregnancy to prevent spina bifi da. The current focus is on tackling premature birth and treating sick babies as well as helping children aff ected by dis-ability and targeting rare diseases.

Asked why she she’s stayed for so long, Sue said: “It’s interesting and rewarding and you can see what a diff erence the charity is making.”

Sue was presented with a limited edition Paddington Bear print, Na-tional Trust membership and other gifts by Finance Director Martin Richardson and everyone bade her a fond farewell.

John Lewis and Waitrose have re-ceived an overwhelming response to the recruitment drive for the new John Lewis ‘At Home’ Hor-sham shop and the new, bigger Waitrose supermarket, with over 900 applications put forward for just 192 jobs.

The new 45,000 square feet John Lewis will share its location on Al-bion Way with a 27,000 square feet Waitrose supermarket. The exist-ing Waitrose in Horsham will be relocated to the new site and all 120 of the current members of staff will also be transferred. Both shops

are due to open later this year, this being the third co-located site for John Lewis and Waitrose.

Commenting on the recruitment process, Rebekah Hawley, Person-nel Growth Manager at John Lewis, said: “We’ve been extremely im-pressed with the calibre of candi-dates who have applied for posi-tions at our new John Lewis ‘At Home’ and Waitrose, Horsham. Those who are successful will ben-efit from the John Lewis Partner-ship’s unique structure, meaning they will all be co-owners of the business and receive a host of ben-

In February, the Neighbourhood Plan for Storrington, Sullington and Washington was published and made available for public comments.

Providing a recommendation for the retention of 24 green spaces, including the Mill Pond, River Storr and Environs (Riverside Walk), Fry-ern Dell and The Glade, the Plan also stresses the need to preserve green corridors, ponds, and so forth for the benefit of wildlife.

Furthermore, the Storrington Community Partnership has award-ed a second grant to the society,

which is set to be used to produce a promotional leaflet for the Fryern Dell project.

Looking ahead, the society is pre-paring for the formal unveiling of a stone bench beside the Fryern Dell waterfall, on April 19 at 11am. Con-structed by Mike Summers, a local landscaper, and generously funded by the Lions Club, the society hopes that it will make a pleasant seat for years to come.

As ever, Storrington Convserva-tion Society welcome volunteers to join their work parties, with the next event taking place at the Glade

on Saturday, April 4 at at 10am. The work will include clearing paths and laying chippings for easy walking, with coffee and equipment pro-vided.

A walk has also been organised for April 22, starting at the Leisure Centre car park at 10:30am, and will be led by Jessica Jacob along River-side Walk.

For more information about the society or how to get involved, please contact Mick Denness on 01903 745971 or visit the society’s website at www.storringtonconser-vation.org.uk

Southwater library now open after refurbishment

After being completed near the end of last year, the official re-opening was recently held on Friday, March 6.

This Project was jointly funded by Southwater Parish Council and West Sussex County Council and culmi-nates years of lengthy negotiations between all with an interest in Bee-son House.

Southwater’s library will now be based on the ground floor of Beeson House and the existing Youth Club has now moved to the first floor, with five small offices created in the space vacated by the youth club. It is hoped that the creation of these small of-fice units will assist in the economic growth within the community for small businesses, many of whom now currently work from home.

A further small community room has also been provided to assist with the potential need of the community in finding a meeting space for a va-riety of clubs and activities.

It is hoped that the income gener-ated by the office accommodation will assist the Parish Council and its partners in the delivery of future services such as the library, youth project and other community-based projects to the benefit of the whole parish.

The Southwater Youth Project has set the way locally and the concept is now being adopted by other local par-ishes within the Horsham district.

For further details please con-tact The Clerk at Southwater Parish Council on 01403 733208.

Welcome to my new column enti-tled, Out and About in Horsham, or OAAIH.

Last week I was made aware by Rossella Raciti (owner of the Car-mel Deli) of an incident which took place outside Barclays Bank in the carfax, Horsham.

OAAIH: The carfax bollard strikes againIt seems the locally known ‘in-

famous bell shaped bollard outside Barclays bank in the Carfax’ has struck again!

This catchy titled obstruction of mass destruction has again caused vehicular upset to an innocent driv-er with great success and continues to pose a threat to unassuming mo-torists.

So when driving in the vicinity of this multiple off ender please be vigilant, you never know when it'll strike again.

Christ’s Hospital welcome top speakers

On February 25, Dr Michael Black, former Managing Director of the American Stock Exchange and now a Senior Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford visited Christ’s Hospital to give an economics lecture on the fi nancial crisis of 2008.

The School was also delighted to welcome Lord Lawson, ex Chancel-lor of the Exchequer, to the lecture.

James Winsbury, Senior Gre-cian (Head Pupil), reported: “Hav-ing studied theoretical fi nance at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr

Black’s career took off with a man-aging role at McKinsey & Company, later superseded by directing roles at the American Stock Exchange and Lotus Cars Ltd. He now works at the University of Oxford, hav-ing completed his doctorate there in 2008 on the ‘Moral Theology of the Corporation’. It is the fi nan-cial crisis of that year that aff ected so many people across the world, which Dr Black spoke to the Eco-nomics pupils about. Though ad-mitting himself that holding the attention of so many young adults at 8pm on a Wednesday night whilst discussing Subprime Mort-gages and Collateralised Debt Obli-gations was a tough task, Dr Black managed to deliver an accessible yet equally informative talk.”

Horsham Microbiz 2015 – once again best for businessThe Drill Hall in Horsham was the venue once again on Saturday, March 14, for another successful Microbiz event with around 400 local people taking the chance to network and get hot business tips.

Business from all across the Dis-trict came together once again to celebrate the 13th annual Microbiz event, which really does bring out the best of the local small business talent as well as established busi-nesses and those just starting out.

Organised by Horsham District Council, the event this year saw in the region of 40 exhibitors from a range of business sectors, show-ing the event is still going from strength to strength.

Over 400 people took the oppor-tunity to network, do business and learn a tip or two from expert semi-nar speakers and the overriding re-sponse was that Horsham Microbiz had lived up to, and perhaps even, exceeded expectations once again this year.

Horsham District Councillor

and Cabinet Member for the Lo-cal Economy, Cllr Roger Paterson, whose idea it was originally to pro-vide an event for small businesses, said: “From the meeting and greet-ing, the communications, the pres-entation and handling of seminars, to the care and detail in setting up the stands and decorations, the whole fair was very successful and, judging by comments during the day, greatly valued and appreciat-ed by exhibitors and visitors alike. This was a high quality community event with an extremely positive atmosphere.”

Just some of the visitors’ com-ments summing up the 2015 event included:

“Exciting, enriching and satisfy-ing.”

“Excellent variety of exhibitors - great to see the event so busy”.

“Very informative, and a one-stop shop for all business needs.”

“A mix of inspiration and solid, sound business advice!”

“Very useful and stimulating.

Though provoking yet empower-ing!”

“A reinvigoration, just when I need it!”

There were seven free business master classes delivered by experts in their fi eld, ranging from market-ing and PR to dealing with tax and VAT as a business and also seminars off ering advice on customer ser-vice, social media and making the most of a website.

The 2015 winners of the best dressed stands were, Metro hr Ltd for best small stand and Young Start-up Talent, best large stand.

Bestselling author and marketing expert, Dee Blick, who has support-ed the event for many years intro-duced Cllr Paterson who offi cially opened the event.

All in all, Horsham Microbiz once again did the business!

PETs POSTSponsored by

Three simple rules for preventing overweight pets

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA, talks about the dangers of overweight pets.If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email me at [email protected]. I hope you enjoy the read.

With Easter on the horizon, our thoughts are turning to the delights the Easter bunny will be bringing us and the anticipated overindul-gence of chocolate after depriva-tion during lent.

For many pets overindulgence, via well-meaning owners, is a seri-ous concern. Just as in humans, be-ing overweight can lead to a reduc-tion on the length or quality of life of a beloved pet. There are links be-tween being overweight and medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancers. It can also aff ect your pet’s ability to behave normally, like run-ning or jumping.

Avoid your pet becoming over-weight by following three simple rules. 1) If you give your pet treats, make sure you subtract them from your pet’s daily food ration. 2) En-courage your pet to keep active to

avoid piling on the pounds. 3) Moni-tor your pet’s weight and if you have concerns, consult your vet.

Remember dogs need walking at least once a day, cats need activi-ties to stimulate chasing behaviour and rabbits need a hutch perma-nently attached to a run with a clear 3 metres to give them the space they need to stay healthy.

You can download a free Pet Size-O-Meter from the Pet Food Manu-facturers website www.pfma.org.uk for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and guinea pigs to help you learn the correct shape for your pet. For dogs and cats, you should be able to see and feel the outline of your pet’s ribs

without excess fat covering them. Your pet’s waist should be clearly visible when viewed from above and the tummy should be tucked up when viewed from the side.

If you think your pet is over-weight, speak to your vet to rule out any underlying medical conditions and so they can recommend a weight reduction programme. You can fi nd out more about dog obesity at dogs.channel4.com/fat-dogs

Remember, you have a duty of care to keep your animal at a healthy weight. Animals should be given food specifi cally made for that spe-cies of animal and the manufac-turer’s instructions followed, unless advise otherwise by your vet. You can now purchase RSPCA pet food, specifi cally designed to meet the nutritional needs of your pet, and purchases will support your local RSPCA Sussex North branch; shop.rspca.org.uk/sussexn.

Many human food can be poison-ous to animals such as onions, choc-olate and grapes/raisins, so make sure your pet keep away from the chocolate Easter bunnies this year.

Lola is a 7 year old Alaskan Mal-amute who has a sweet tooth and helped her self to a whole

box of chocolates; she ate the whole contents including the wrappers.

This could have been a death sentence as chocolate

contains a stimulant called theobromine that is poi-sonous to dogs.

Luckily Lola was rushed to Arun Veterinary

fl uids.The amount of theobromine

diff ers between chocolate - white chocolate containing the least and dark the most.

Theobromine mainly aff ects the heart, kidneys and central nerv-ous system and symptoms occur between 4-24hrs post ingestion, symptoms include - vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, hyper-activity, rapid breathing, muscle tension and seizures.

In extreme cases these can be followed by coma and death.

Lola made a full recovery at Arun Vets, but if your dog does fancy a cream egg this Easter it might get more than it bargained for.

If you are thinking of taking your dog or cat abroad on holiday with-in the EU you need to be aware of the rules surrounding the move-ment of pets and to plan for your trip in good time.

The Pet Travel Scheme applies only to dogs, cats (and ferrets). Traveling within the EU is rela-tively straightforward, under the EU pet travel scheme; you can travel freely within the EU with your cat, dog or ferret if it has a Eu-ropean Pet Passport although you can only travel with a maximum of fi ve pets. For your pet to qualify for entry into an EU country without the need for quarantine, they must have a pet passport which shows that they have been:

micro-chipped before rabies vaccination

vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before traveling

treated by a vet against tape-worm with 24-120 hours prior to entry to the UK (this applies to dogs only)

A pet passport must be issued by an Offi cial Veterinarian (OV). If your vet does not have an OV at their practice, they can advise you how to contact the nearest one. There is normally a charge for a pet passport and the cost may vary between practices. Make sure that your pet receives the rabies vacci-nation at least 21 days before you plan to travel and that the vaccina-tion is received after your pet has been micro-chipped – otherwise the vaccination will not count for the passport purposes!

Some changes were introduced

Taking your pets abroad on holiday - plan aheadto the Pet Travel Scheme in 2014. A new style pet passport was intro-duced although the old ones will remain valid for the life of the pet. If your pet fails to meet any of the entry requirements when it arrives in the UK, the pet may be placed in quarantine at your expense un-til disease-control requirements have been met. It is also possible to take your pet to some Non EU countries and the details can be checked on the Pet Travel Scheme website.

Your pet’s microchip number is registered on a database; make sure the details are up to date be-fore you travel, including your mobile telephone number, as this could help reunite you with your pet should it go missing while on

holiday. If you are going to any of the

Mediterranean countries there are diseases such as Leishmaniasis that we do not see in the UK and extra precautions may be needed to protect your pet. Your vet will be able to advise you about this. If traveling by car you will need to take extra water and a bowl for your pet may need to make additional com-fort stops! Remember that you m i g h t not be

able to get your pet's favour-ite food in Europe so may need to take supplies of that as well. Fi-nally some dogs and most cats fi nd travel quite stressful and it may be easier to book them into kennels or a cattery near to home.

For the most up to date informa-tion you can check on line at https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad.

Is there a right time to say goodbye to a beloved pet?Susan GregersenVets2Home Veterinary Service

Having been a veterinary sur-geon for 15 years, the ques-tion of when is the right time to say good-bye to a pet is one of the most d i f f i c u l t questions to answer.

But one thing is cer-tain – a good life de-serves a respectful and gentle departure at the end which paves the way for everlasting happy memories.

After treating pets at home since 2005, we have become experts in this fi eld as my practice, Vets2Home, now special-ises in helping families

have time for a peace-ful ending with their much-loved pet – in the comfort of their own home.

Many animal lov-ers, and vet col-leagues, have very diff erent defi ni-tions of what makes a “happy pet” and what a good pet life should include when their health decline and when should you give your pet a peaceful and digni-fi ed goodbye, free of stress and pain? Al-though we often hear pet owners express the secret wish that their pet will go quietly in his or her sleep this almost never happens, or usually not with-out some degree of

suff ering fi rst - something we al-low to happen to humans but which we can spare our animals.

Having visited and helped thou-sands of pets at home, I strongly believe the right time is when your pet and you lose the joy in your life together, whether this is due to old age or unmanageable illnesses. The reasons can be many - from not eating, or eating excessively but with severe weight loss, poor mo-bility, hidden or subtle pain, vocal-ising, hiding, not interacting, soil-ing inappropriately, grumpiness or even aggression to sleeping a lot - or not at all. Some of which could be indications of severe illness or of what I call “petzheimers” which makes your elderly pet a completely diff erent “person”.

When deciding when and how to

intervene – with investigations or at-home animal hospice care as we off er - it is vital to remember why we have these loyal loving creatures in our lives. They give us such joy, loyalty, companionship and much more, and in return we give them our love, food and shelter – and of-ten even our bed!

That is why I strongly believe the one last gesture of love we can show our pets is a calm, respectful end - without stress, pain or suff ering, when it is most needed and not before. And that goodbye should ideally be at home, surrounded by loved ones, familiar smells and sounds, pain-free and in that fa-vourite spot.

At Vets2Home we are devoted to fi nding out what joy and quality of life really means to your pet - and

to you - by giving you advice by phone, by email or on a home as-sessment becoming one of our VIPs with 24/7 vet help.

As a hospice vet, I want to leave the owners with only happy memo-ries of their special furry friend and I feel honoured to be able to give our patients a dignifi ed, pain-free end. I am grateful and humbled to receive so many kind words from our clients after wards.

Please meet us on Facebook and hear what our many lovely clients say about us or read more mobile vet stories on my blog: http://mo-bile-vet.blogspot.co.uk.

Horsham choir perform at National Choral Competition

Christ’s Hospital Schola Canto-rum have recently raised the roof at London’s Royal Festival Hall to take part in Barnardo’s prestigious Na-tional Choral Competition.

Throughout the evening, 26 choirs sang their hearts out to win the junior or senior choir crowns, raising £35,000 in the name of Bar-

nardo’s to help support their work with vulnerable children across the UK.

The Horsham choir competed against seven other under 18’s choirs from across the country, singing Noel Coward’s ‘The Party’s Over’ led by conductor Andrew Cleary and accompanist Will Todd.

Godolphin Vocal Ensemble from Salisbury ended up being crowned as winners and now have their very own song written by British conductor and composer Douglas Coombes MBE.

Jen Privett, UK Events Manager at Barnardo’s, said: “I would like to thank all the choirs who have per-

formed this evening, for the hours of extra work they have put in and for their enthusiasm. The money you have helped raise will go on to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children.”

For more information on the work of Barnardo’s, please visit www.barnardos.org.uk.

Top Jackson tribute heads to Horsham

Michael Jackson is not only re-membered as one of the most in-fl uential artists of all time, but many of today’s artists have been inspired by his iconic style.

His career spanned nearly fi ve decades of music, and he was con-tinually at the forefront of popular music.

Jackson Live in Concert sees long-time fan and hugely talented Ben recreate the Michael Jackson experience with his stunning rendi-tion of all his favourite songs.

Ben’s portrayal of Jackson has to be the most accurate and exciting tribute to the King of Pop to have ever toured UK theatres.

Ben is joined on the stage by his Incredible Band and Dancers who work their way through all the hits. He’s got the look, the moonwalk

and the voice! His renditions of Thriller, Beat it and Billie Jean are truly sensational.

Jackson Live in Concert features all-live vocals, superb musicians and dancers, fabulous costumes, and of course all the signature dance moves associated so fondly with the undisputed King of Pop. Pure MJ!

This is it! This is as real as it gets. Jackson Live in Concert is so much more than just a tribute show - this will be a performance and an event that audiences who witness it will remember forever.

The show takes place on Tuesday, April 28, at 7.30pm at The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets cost £19.50 and are available from the box offi ce on 01403 750220. For more informa-tion visit www.jacksonliveincon-cert.co.uk

Lee Nelson’s brand new show, Suited & Booted comes To The Hawth on Wednesday, April 15.

Experience this cheeky chappy as you have never seen him before…swapping his shorts and baseball cap clobber for a more mature look, and an outlook to match. Now suited and booted, a more thoughtful Lee has begun to engage with life outside his estate and is grappling with bigger issues, off ering his unique spin on religion, politics and immi-gration.

You may have seen character comedian Simon Brodkin making countless national headlines, pushing the boundaries and blurring the lines between his fi ctional characters and the real world.

Most recently, he gate-crashed The X-Factor (ITV1) stage dressed as the ninth member of boyband Stereo Kicks. As Premier League footballer Jason Bent he has warmed up with the Manchester City squad at Goodison Park and ad-dressed waiting reporters outside court still in char-acter following his appear-ance in front of a judge; he joined the England World Cup squad at Luton Airport as they fl ew out to Brazil; and duped reporters into thinking he was signing for QPR in Sky Sports’ transfer deadline day coverage.

Acclaimed charac-ter comedian Simon

Brodkin is the writer and star of BBC Three’s ratings success Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show and Lee Nelson's Well Funny People. Lee has hosted and twice appeared as a guest on Live at the Apollo (BBC One) and re-leased a live DVD. In autumn 2013, Lee toured the country with his third stand-up show and a second appear-ance on Let’s Dance for…Comic Re-

lief (BBC One), where he made the fi nal. Last year Premier League footballer Jason Bent hosted his own World Cup show, Jason Bent's Greatest Ever

World Cup Goals, Ever! (BBC Three) and more recently he starred in The Football’s On (BT Sport).

Simon’s additional television and radio credits include ap-

pearances on Channel 4’s Comedy Gala; Abso-lutely Fabulous (BBC One) and Children In Need (BBC One). Simon also wrote a weekly column

in the News of The World as Lee Nelson. He has had three previous sell-out tours and has taken fi ve hit solo shows to the Ed-inburgh Festival Fringe, where he won the Writer’s Guild Award for Best New-comer.

Lee Nelson takes on a more mature look at life

The sun will come out “Tomorrow” is the iconic song from “Annie” – but the sun came out today for the audiences who warmed to Farling-ton Prep School’s bright, colourful and heartening rendition of this much-loved musical.

Using Farlington’s New Courtyard Hall with its enhanced facilities for drama, producer Lucy Cooper made skilful and imaginative use of the space and some 50 girls acted, danced and sang with assurance, talent and oodles of charm. Every ounce of pa-thos – and humour – was wrung out of the absorbing storyline, not least from the two girls who portrayed An-nie with such winsome panache.

The Year 6 girls fi lled the range of character parts – including a dog! - with thoughtful attention to detail whilst the younger members of the cast showed their versatility switch-ing between orphans, servants and sundry New Yorkers.

The songs have great variety and, under the expert musical direction of Brian Dallimore, this young cast delivered them with just the right mix of gusto and subtlety. Defi nitely a triumph for the Farlington Prep School and their ability to spread a little sunshine.

A Triumph for Farlington’s “Annie”!

An archway leads from the kitchen to the dining room which comfortably fi ts a large dining ta-ble and chairs, however the open plan feel of the two rooms gives the illusion of one large space. The aspect of both rooms is on to the rear garden which in itself, off ers a great deal of seclusion. The garden is accessed through doors from the kitchen and French doors from the dining area. Just beyond the din-ing room there is a small storage area that off ers space for an ad-ditional upright fridge and waist high freezer. The door beyond here leads to a superb cinema room which really must be seen to be ap-preciated. (Please note fi xtures and fi ttings in the cinema room are not included or, are available through

Abie Sweatman Director at Lines & James was ready to hand over the

ibly popular with a number of other tenants moving in over the coming weeks and only two apartments re-maining.

First move in at Tower CourtProperty specialist Leaders has launched a new competition, Love Liv-ing in, which shines a spotlight on what it is that makes the place people call home special.

Leaders’ marketing manager, Alison Guyton, says: “Every town, city, vil-lage and suburb is different; made up of a unique assortment of people, streets, buildings, landscapes, amenities, tradi-tions and things to see and do. We know that each area is loved for many different reasons by the people who live there, and we want to see and hear about them all!

“Love Living in is open to everyone across the UK. We are asking people to create a short film, no more than 3 min-utes long, that demonstrates what you love about where you live. Entrants have the chance to win a selection of prizes of up to £1,000 plus £1,000 for a local cause or community group* of their choice.

“You don’t need to be an expert at making films or have any special film equipment; you can use a smart phone, tablet or standard video camera. Films can be by individuals, groups or organi-sations and the competition is open to people of all ages and from all areas across the UK.”

Honest, reliable and professional

>

We decided to put our house on the market and had

valuations from various local leading estate agents.

We were overwhelmed by the professionalism and

expertise we received from IN House. They successfully

sold our house within the first couple of weeks at a

fantastic price!

IN House is a professional operator that has secured

us good tenants in very short times and has always

been there on any issue.

Horsham sail through at EastbournehockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham sail through at Eastbourne

Saturday March 14 - South League Premier Division 2 Eastbourne 1 - 3 Horsham Men’s 1st XI After going a goal down Horsham drew level then eased to a comfort-able win despite not starting at full strength and suff ering sidelining injuries during the game.

With the interval approaching Collyer’s Peter Neave calmly equal-ised and after the break former captain John Burroughs gave Hor-sham the lead before teenager Joe Humphreys nonchalantly took the aerial route to defeat Eastbourne’s

outstanding goalkeeper, putting the result beyond all doubt.

Team Manager Al Campbell told us: “This was a good day at the of-fi ce for Horsham, especially as Cir-dec Atkinson pulled his quad after fi ve minutes and Dom Male turned his ankle and had to come off early in the second half. But our young bloods accepted the challenge, un-derlining our strength in depth and confi rming their readiness to play in the senior side. 16 year old Noah Chinn - unlucky to have a goal dis-allowed – is already showing real prowess and Andy McIlwraith and Rob Turnbull have both slotted in really well from the seconds. Next week when most players should be available there’ll be a selection headache – a nice problem to have!”

Henley seemed to have had the league wrapped up but now all per-vasive Banbury are snapping at their

heels. With only the champions and runners up promoted and no play-off s for the chasing pack each have two games to play - Henley are on 53 points and Banbury 51. Horsham, playing well with fi ve straight wins and seven victories out of their last eight encounters, are third on 45 points and would reach 54 if they win their three remaining games. Their toughest task will be their penulti-mate game - against extraordinarily high scoring Banbury, but Horsham have conceded the fewest number of goals in the league. Yet, if promo-tion goes down to the wire Banbury have the exceptional goal diff erence of +70, which could yet be crucial.

Horsham return home tomorrow (Saturday March 21), taking on Mar-low at noon. Placed eighth, Marlow were thrashed 7-0 by Banbury last week and hover just above the dan-ger zone.

Horsham Hawks winning run stretches to eight

Horsham Hawks U12 87 - 45 Craw-ley Cagers U12

Youth BasketballDave Smith - Sports Editor

The Horsham Hawks beat local rivals the Crawley Cagers for the second time in as many weeks with a solid off ensive performance cou-pled with strong rebounding.

Horsham got off to a positive start taking an early 13-4 lead with eleven well executed fi rst quarter points from Josh Lea-Clayton before a strong Crawley side battled back to outscore the Hawks 10-8 narrowing the hosts advantage to 21-14 as the period ended.

The Hawks off ence exploded in the second quarter with twenty unan-swered points triggered by intense defence and confi dent rebounding from Joshua Tavolieri, Harry Rose and Amy Willcox that set up wave after wave of fast break opportuni-ties that were skilfully converted by Miguel Venturini and Charlotte Willcox. A late four points from Crawley made the half time score 50-19 to Horsham.

A re-energised Crawley team

came out fi ghting after the inter-val scoring 8 straight points to start the third quarter before Horsham responded with an 11-0 run of their own with baskets from Fin Bennett and Anaya Wakefi eld. With less than ten seconds remaining at the end of the quarter Lea-Clayton hit a fi fteen foot jump shot before im-mediately stealing the ball back and setting up Miguel Venturini for an-other long jump shot as the buzzer sounded extending the Hawks lead further to 75-33.

Antonio Lozzi and Tavolieri added to the Hawks scoring to begin the fourth quarter before a resilient Crawley team again fought back to the end the game outscoring Horsh-am 10-4 over the fi nal fi ve minutes.

The 87-45 victory sustains Hor-sham’s perfect start to 2015 and sets up an exciting fi xture next week as current Sussex league leaders, Wor-thing visit Horsham to play the sec-ond place Hawks.

Horsham hosts annual mini rugby festivalJunior RugbyDave Smith - Sports Editor

Horsham Rugby Club will be again be hosting the Horsham Mini Rug-by Festival on Sunday, March 29 at their ground in Hammerpond Road.

I n one of the premier events of its kind in the South seven hun-dred children aged between six and twelve from clubs across Sussex and Surrey will be competing to be Horsham Mini Rugby Champions.

In addition the outstanding player from the U12 fi nal will be awarded the Henry Adams Cup.

The Horsham Mini Rugby Festival has a history of attracting some of the best young talent around with full England internationals Billy Twelvetrees and Joe Launchbury previously playing in the compe-tition, and with the quality of the clubs taking part it is highly likely that some stars of the future will be playing this year.

Horsham Rugby Club would like to see as many local people as pos-sible at the festival to witness a day of fun, skill and passion from the future of local rugby

The event will include the highly popular BBQ, refreshments and raf-fl e with the bar opening at 11.00am. The car park opens at 9.00am with matches commencing at 10.30am and the fi nals being played at 2.30pm. For further information visit www.horshamrufc.com.

interval but two second half goals, one after ten minutes and the other a quarter of an hour before the end, undid Horsham.

Tomorrow (Saturday March 21) in the fi nal scheduled week of the league programme Horsham, are at home – 2pm - to seventh placed Chelmsford to whom they lost in Essex in November. With the bottom club automatically relegated Horsham’s only pos-sibility of survival in the England Hockey League is to win while pe-nultimate club Bedford lose their last game – against Maidenhead (sixth). Chelmsford have scored fewer goals than any other team in the league and Bedford have lost their last fi ve games, so although Horsham are in a precarious posi-tion they are not without a glim-mer of hope of getting through to the playoff s. But, they would then need to fi nish top of the playoff s to stay up.

Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “We now have Great Britain player Dan Shingles coaching us – he’s excellent and we have played well in the last two games, so we feel confi dent that we can pull this off .”

Two county rugby finals for WealdWednesday March 4 marked an important day in the history of Weald School rugby, as for only the second time in 35 years, two of the schools’ rugby teams qual-ified for the County finals.

The Weald only enter their teams of U14 and above in to the competitions each year and the most recent victory means that the school has now won 4 county titles in the past 3 seasons at dif-ferent age groups.

The two teams that qualified for finals day, held at Brighton rugby club, were the Under 15s and the Under 16s. The older of the two sides, made up of year 11 students, were reigning County champions after winning the title last year and this year had opponents in the shape of Hurstpierpoint College in the final, a school with an ex-cellent rugby tradition. The game was incredibly close and despite tries from full-back Page and prop Payne, Hurst eventually ran out 17-13 winners.

That left The Wealds’ Under 15 side as the sole hope for a title for The Billingshurst – based School. They also came up against strong opponents in The Forest School from Horsham. This scoreline was slightly less close than the U16 fi-nal, as tries from Powell, Heasman and two from Aurhammer, gave The Weald a 27-7 win. This partic-ular Weald side will go on though and look to make it three trophies out of three next season, after winning the Sussex State School Cup last year.

The Weald teams:U16: Page, Warzee, Higgins,

John Mickel back on track and raring to go

Motorsport Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Faygate racing driver John Mick-el is heading for Oulton Park, Cheshire for the opening Legends meeting of the season on Satur-day March 28, telling the District Post: “Amazingly this will be my 34th season and I can’t wait to get started!”

John has won almost more cham-pionships than he can remember: “About 20 or 30 – I’ve won in South Africa, Europe and all over the place and having raced in the States I’d dearly love to do a full season there because NASCAR (the National As-sociation for Stock Car Auto Racing) racing is so popular, pulling in huge crowds of up to 200,000 people.”

Meanwhile John has been gearing up with fitness routines including

half marathons, five a side football and some serious cycling and has clinched a sponsorship deal with Lewes based company Kalimex, manufacturers of K-Seal perma-nent repair for leaks in engine blocks, cylinder heads, gaskets, ra-diators and other components. Mike Schlup, MD of Kalimex says: “As a lifelong motorsport enthusiast the opportunity to sponsor John was just too good to miss. We have been involved with him for many years in minor ways but as full sponsor we can now promote our million selling brand to fellow motor enthusiasts.”

Legends cars replicate 1930s Bon-nie and Clyde type Ford coupes and sedans, but built on a racing chassis and powered by a Yamaha 1250 bike engine. The 2015 Mickel Motor-sports livery is a striking bright or-ange. John started young and by his

late teens was already a world and European champion in Superstox. That and his many subsequent suc-cesses earn him great respect round the circuit and John’s enthusiasm is still infectious: “2015 is going to be an exciting season up against about 30 other cars. I’m thrilled to be driving the K-Seal Legends car – it will be bright, brisk and brilliant for sure!”

Nine meetings are planned in 2015 at prestigious circuits includ-ing Brands Hatch, Donnington and Silverstone; Following Oulton Park John’s next venue will be Brands Hatch the weekend after Easter.

Several of these meetings will be supporting the British Truck Racing Championship which gives an add-ed thrill to proceedings given truck racing is the second most popular motorsport series in the UK.

Late Brown strike salvages a point for YMSaturday March 14 - Sussex County League Div 1

Lancing 1 - 1 Horsham YMCA

FootballTom Norris - Football Reporter

A stoppage time equaliser from Dave Brown salvaged Horsham YMCA a point away at Lancing in Division 1 action last Saturday.

The midfielder’s 93rd minute strike cancelled out Mike William-son’s opener for the Lancers early in the first period, and left the re-silient hosts feeling harshly done by.

Peter Buckland’s side were poor throughout, but an improved final quarter of the game, albeit with-out creating a great deal in front of goal, made the late equaliser somewhat deserved.

The YM boss commented: “We only made one change from last Saturday and so you would have thought that we would just have had the continuity from that. But it just wasn’t the case. Lancing basi-cally had ten men behind the ball and defended really well, but then they were going for us on the break, which they also did well. I think in the last twenty-five minutes we were the better team and definitely deserved something from the game for our second half performance.”

The hosts started the fixture well and opened the scoring on sixteen minutes when youngster, William-son, glided into the box before fir-ing into the far corner.

Buckland added: “The worst thing that could have happened did happen, which was them getting a goal, because they were happy to sit deep and that’s very hard to

break down sometimes.”YM’s lack of quality continued af-

ter the restart, but as the half wore on the visitors did turn posses-sion into pressure. With the game reaching its climax, the Lancers looked as if they would hold on to win, but three minutes into added time YM found an equaliser.

After a low Nick Sullivan shot across goal was parried by Lanc-ing ‘keeper, Fidler, Brown slid in to stab home from close range.

Buckland concluded: “Incredibly we could have come away with a 2-1 victory at the end, which would have been harsh on Lancing be-cause they worked their socks off.”

Roffey Robins Athletic U15 3 – 2 Southwater U15Athletic achieved their second suc-cessive league win in this feisty af-fair against local rivals Southwater.

Robins took an early lead when Ben Gibbs headed home from George Chantrill’s free kick. A fumble by the Southwater keeper allowed Harry Lord to slot home from short range and double robins’ lead. However, with a goal either side of the break from Josh Brine and Marcus Laker, the visitors were soon back on level terms. Late in the second half the visitors looked to have taken the lead but the goal was disallowed for a foul on keeper Sam Chantrill.m Just as the match looked set to finish in stalemate, Alex Barker snatched a last minute winner to seal the points for Robins. Chesworth Rovers U11 8 - 2 Rudg-wick U11

Chesworth took home advantage to the limit in this U11 Heron Way Cup. Finlay was first to score run-ning onto a Lewis pass and chipping the advancing keeper. Lewis himself then joined the score sheet from his own half. Before man of the match Toby shoulder volleyed the first of his 4 goals home. Nyle volleyed the Rudgwick goal kick back to goal to score a contender for Rovers goal of the season. Toby was rampant in the second half knocking a hat-trick past the keeper to add to his first half goal. Finlay doubled his tally, but not before some slack defending allowed Rudgwick 2 goals to see them out of

the cup but trying to the end. The second match saw Toby and Lewis score again joined by Regan, Leo and a cracker from Elliott, making it 5 - 0 Chesworth.Horsham SparrowsHolbrook Club Tournament

The team played Greenway and al-though they lost their first game 3-0, they rallied and went on to win the second game 6-1. Goals from Cam-eron (2), Stanley (1) and Harry (3) helped the team to their first win. Horsham Sparrows Under 12

The team ran out 4-1 home win-ners against Southwater. Goals from Charlie and Tim with a brace form man of the match Andi helped secure the points.Horsham Sparrows Under 13

Another tough game for the Un-der 13’s as they came up against high flying Cranleigh Youth in an A Divi-sion League match. Cranleigh ran out 5 - 0 winners but the game was a lot closer than the score reflected with good performances throughout the team. The man of the Match was Ja-cob M who worked hard throughout and used the ball intelligently.Horsham Sparrows Under 14

Another defeat for sinking HornetsfootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Another defeat for sinking Hornets

Saturday March 14 - Ryman League Division One South

Horsham 0 - 2 Whitstable Town

Visitors Whitstable kept their hopes of a play off place alive with this comfortable win at Goring’s Mead while Horsham all but turned the lights out on their Ryman League future with another lacklustre per-formance.

Horsham have now only picked up one point from their last nine games and failed to score in the last three while conceding eleven goals in those three games. With eight games to play the Hornets are eff ectively eight points adrift of safety, given their vastly inferior goal diff erence. Unless a complete turnaround in fortunes take place in the last few games what has been a miserable season off the pitch, with Horsham Council’s rejec-tion of their new ground, will be mir-rored on the pitch by relegation.

The fi rst half was a very poor aff air, and the second half was not much better, with both sides creating very little decent football and even less goal scoring threat.

Tom Gilbert and Jack Hope came in for the unavailable Tom Hughes and Bailo Camara and George Branford started in place of Luis Felipe Luis de Andrade, who was on the bench.

The Hornets nearly went behind within a few minutes when the nor-mally solid Gareth Williams dropped an easy catch but managed to gath-er it at the second attempt. Wil-liams however pulled off a superb

stop minutes later diving to save Joe Kane's header after a mistake by Hope.

Trevor McCreadie did force de-fender Jake Mackenzie into a brave block but his shot was from an acute angle and the better option for the Horsham striker would have been to pass.

Joe Obersteller did well to clear a dangerous cross but he was absent when Town’s Ian Pulman was left in the clear only to lob over the Horsh-am crossbar. A few other half eff orts from Whitstable were all the remain-der of the half held in store and the sides went in goalless at the break.

Horsham did have the ball in the net seven minutes after the restart

but Tony Nwachukwu was well off -side and the eff ort was ruled out by referee Anthony Foster. The better of the chances and the play was com-ing from Whitstable however with Loynes, Doherty and Pulman all hav-ing chances to put their side ahead.

They did eventually take the lead on sixty fi ve minutes when Jack Hope in the Horsham defence allowed the ball to run to Williams who made a to-tal air shot of his clearance which left Tom Loynes a simple tap in. Whitsta-ble found the net again two minutes later but the linesman’s fl ag came to the rescue of the Hornets and the goal was ruled out. For some reason Tom Vickers, who had been possibly Horsham’s best player, was surpris-

ingly replaced by de Andrade and within minutes of the substitution Whitstable had a second, and again it was an awful piece of Horsham play that gifted the goal. A long punt up fi eld from visiting keeper Luke Wat-kins somehow left Hamilton on his own with two forwards, Rowland and Pulman, and it was easy for Rowland to set up Pulman to blast past Wil-liams and wrap up the match.

The damage to the Hornets was slightly limited as most of the teams with them in the bottom fi ve also

lost. However it was another game gone without any points being add-ed to Horsham’s miserly thirty they have for the season and with a visit to fi fth bottom Hastings tomorrow (Saturday March 21) another loss would virtually end any hope of Hor-sham escaping the drop.

Horsham Team: Williams, Ober-steller, Hamilton, Hope, Byrne, Gil-bert, Welch, Vickers (de Andrade 70) McCreadie, Nwachukwu, Branford. Unused Subs: Izokun, Storey, Berry, Peake.

Goal scoring opportunities were few and far between in an evenly contested game with Heath hav-ing the better of the play but the Lions of Pagham being more clinical in front of goal.

The fi rst opening was created by Heath’s Tiago Andrade a free kick from the left was whipped in towards the far post and headed narrowly wide. Then on eighteen minutes Andrade set up a chance for Rob Godfrey but his left foot shot from the edge of the penalty area was again just wide of the up-right.

The visitors however took the

lead on the half-hour. After a Pa-gham break into the Heath penalty area resulted in a scuff ed shot that was going well wide of Heath’s right hand post but was somehow turned in by Ruben French past a stranded Michael Chester in the Heath goal.

The second period followed a similar pattern as the fi rst with neither side creating many goal scoring opportunities until the fi nal minutes of the match; Ol-lie Moore won possession on the halfway line wide on the right and played a superb left foot pass into the path of Andrade who shrugged off a defender carried the ball into the Pagham penalty area but tried to take the ball around the ad-vancing Pagham keeper James Binfi eld who just managed to get a touch on the ball allowing a defender to get back and clear. Heath threw caution to the wind

in search of the equaliser but were caught out when Howard Neigh-bour broke away in the 4th minute of added time to score Pagham’s second. The win maintained Pa-gham’s promotion hopes as well as taking revenge over Heath for a 0-2 home defeat earlier in the season.

After the match Heath Manager Steve Painter was still very posi-tive and said “We have just played a top three side and there was nothing between the teams, I’ve just told our players they need to have a bit more belief in them-selves, be a little more clinical in front of goal, then next season we can really push on for a top six fi nish”.

Heath Team: M. Chester, Alfi eri (Mobsby 75), Robinson, Attwater, Flack, Waddingham, Moore, God-frey, Holmes (Legrange 80), An-drade, Sultan.
