FADE IN:

OVER BLACK.

EICHMANN (V.O.)Jews. You have nothing to fear. We want the best for you. Very soon, trains will transport you to a nice place, a place where you can work, where your wives can stay at home and where your children can attend school.

EXT. MUNKACS - EARLY MORNING

A large group of JEWISH MEN AND WOMEN, all brandishing a yellow STAR OF DAVID on their clothing, crowd around an elevated wooden podium.

At it’s helm, ADOLF EICHMANN, dressed in full Nazi garb, addresses the restless group.

Standing around him, an assortment of high and low ranking SS SOLDIERS.

EICHMANNYou will have wonderful lives.

In the crowd, ZEEV SAPIR (20), listens intently, oblivious to the horrors he will bear witness to in the coming days.

WOOT WOOT...

EXT. MUNKACS BRICK FACTORY - DAYS LATER

A LARGE TRAIN parked on train tracks, clouds of steam pouring from it’s exhaust.

Thousands of Jewish people crowd around it, confusion and chaos pulsing through them as guards try to herd them like cattle into the small cattle cars.

The reverberating clatter of machine gun fire proceed a few screams of terror.

Two guards beat an elderly man with batons, as he tries to defend himself. They scream profanities at him.

Sapir stands in a line with his family, MOTHER, FATHER, four younger BROTHERS and SISTER, waiting to be stripped naked like those in front of him.

His hand shakes a little.

A host of guards rummage through men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing for valuables, tossing the clothes back to them when finished.

NAZI OVERSEERNext!

Sapir and his family make their way forward.

NAZI GUARD #1Strip.

The family begins to take their clothes off, ashamed.

Sapir places his clothes on a table, and hands a stack of PERSONAL DOCUMENTS to a guard.

The guard burns them in a trash can fire.

WHOOSH...

INT. CATTLE CAR - MINUTES LATER

Light fills the darkened car as the door flies open, a guard gesturing for a group of men, women and children, including Sapir and his family, to climb in.

They do, slowly filling up the car until there is no room left. The long line never seems to end, as more people cram into the small space, leaving them no choice but to stand.

103 people pressed against one another.

Another guard puts TWO BUCKETS, one filled with water, the other empty, in the car with them.

The door slams shut, bringing with it, darkness.

EXT. CATTLE CAR - DAYS LATER

Flashes of light illuminate terrified eyes from inside the tiny window of the cattle car.

INT. CATTLE CAR - CONTINUOUS

Sapir stares out into the night as the flashes of light illuminate his bloodshot eyes and terrified expression.

The lights disappear. Darkness.

2.

WHOOSH...

OVER BLACK.

NAZI GUARD #2 (V.O.)Out! Everybody out, now!

INT. CATTLE CAR - NIGHT

A BLINDING LIGHT fills the void of darkness as the cattle door opens.

The sound of savage dogs barking.

EXT. AUSCHWITZ - CONTINUOUS

The men, women, and children file slowly from the train, shadows of their former selves. The looks of terror stay the same.

Sapir steps out, gaunt and unkept, eyes sunk deep into the recesses of his skull. He looks around.

In this distance, he sees a GIANT CHIMNEY, smoking in the night.

The group is herded towards an SS OFFICER, who is pointing at people as they walk towards him.

Behind him, two lines of people, the left headed towards the camp, the right line leading to the smoking chimney.

SS OFFICER(pointing at different people)

Recht. Recht. Recht. Recht. Links. Recht. Recht...

Sapir approaches with his family.

SS OFFICER (CONT’D)(pointing at Sapir)

Links...(pointing at Sapir’s family)

Recht.

SAPIRNo!

3.

He tries to run to his family as they are being pulled away into the right line, but a guard knocks him down with the butt of his rifle.

SAPIR’S FATHERSapir! Sapir! Let us have our boy, please!

Sapir’s mother and sister begin to sob.

It’s no use. Sapir is dragged away into the left line, watching his family being pulled away into the right line, the giant chimney spouting smoke and ashes into the sky behind them like some great monster.

INT. AUSCHWITZ GAS CHAMBERS - DAYS LATER

A HAND, grabs onto a LIFELESS ARM.

The hand pulls it, struggling to move the body the arm is attached to.

Sapir readjusts, his A3800 TATTOO, flexing on his bony arm.

EXT. AUSCHWITZ COURTYARD - MINUTES LATER

Sapir struggles to drag the corpse of a ELDERLY JEWISH WOMAN through the courtyard.

He stops in front of a DENTIST, who inspects the woman’s mouth, then gestures him to move on.

He stops in front a barber, who quickly cuts all of her hair off.

He drags her to a large pit and pushes the woman’s body into a HUGE PILE of corpses, men, women and children, burning slowly.

NAZI GUARD #3 (V.O.)Wake up! Everybody outside, now!

INT. JARWORZNO BARRACKS - DAWN

Sapir jumps from his bunk with many others as Nazi guards scream for them to hurry into the courtyard.

He is hardly recognizable now, a skeleton weighing no more than a hundred pounds.

4.

EXT. JARWORZNO BARRACKS - CONTINUOUS

A group of 3,000 prisoners stand around confused.

For a moment it looks like they are about to be executed when...

NAZI GUARD #4(pointing towards exit)

Start walking.

After a moment of hesitation, the group begins to walk.

EXT. HUNGARIAN ROAD - DAY

The exhausted group trudges through deep pockets of snow as Nazi guards escort them from all sides.

They can see their breath. Their purple lips shiver.

Sapir walks near the front, eyes dead.

From behind, an EXHAUSTED PRISONER falls in the snow. A guard rushes over and shoots him in the head, the gunshot echoing through the forest.

A flock of birds take flight from a tree nearby.

EXT. BETHUNE - EVENING

The much small group of men and women sit on the side of the road, their captors hovering over them like vultures.

The SS COMMANDER walks up in front of them.

SS COMMANDERAnybody who cannot walk any further can stay here. A truck will come by later to pick you up. The rest of you, keep moving.

EXT. DINING HALL - LATER

It becomes immediately apparent that only a few of the prisoners decided to march, thirty at most.

The dining hall is half destroyed, brick and mortar lay crumbled everywhere and all of the windows are blown out.

5.

SS COMMANDERI know you are all hungry. We can stop and get you some food here.

INT. DINING HALL - CONTINUOUS

A LARGE COOKING POT is placed on a counter.

The group of prisoners make their way towards it.

One prisoner jumps in front of everyone and tries to grab some food.

A LUGER is placed against the back of his head.

BLAM!

The bowl fills up with brain and skull. The prisoner falls to the floor with a sickening THUD!

The other prisoners are taken aback, frightened.

SS COMMANDERDo not worry! He was being greedy!

The SS Commander gestures to the bowl again.

Another prisoner makes his way forward.

BLAM!

Sapir jumps back in surprise, knowing what is happening.

BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!

Each sound contorts Sapir’s face a little bit more, until there is nothing but pure terror.

The other guards block him and the rest of the group in.

A YOUNG PRISONER is brought up to the bowl.

YOUNG PRISONERThe German people will answer to history for th--

BLAM!

OVER BLACK.

The sound of the gunshot echoes.

6.

SS SUPERIOR (V.O.)That is enough. Take the rest of them to Gleiwitz and wait for further orders.

SCREECH!

INT. TRAIN - NIGHT

Flashes of light illuminate the darkness from outside, illuminate Sapir’s face. He is down to seventy pounds now. His hands shake uncontrollably.

EXT. GLEIWITZ COURTYARD - NIGHT

Eleven prisoners, including Sapir, are marched through the courtyard by the Nazis they have come to know so well.

Frost clings to their hair.

The camp is overcrowded and run down.

One of the guards opens up a cellar door attached to a building.

NAZI GUARD #4Get in.

The prisoners do.

The door slams shut, cracks of moonlight illuminating their prison.

Around them, thousands of FROZEN POTATOES.

They look to each other for a moment.

Sapir’s eyes well up.

They gorge.

EXT. FOREST - MORNING

White snow blankets the earth.

The sun shines through a few clouds.

Thousands of prisoners are marching through the deep snow, a huge line of Nazis in their wake.

All of the Nazis are brandishing MACHINE GUNS.

7.

Sapir walks with them.

CLAK CLAK CLAK CLAK!

Machine gun fire pierces the quiet air as bodies begin to fall by the dozens.

NAZI GUARD #6Run Jews! Run to your freedom!

Sapir begins to run, bullets cracking the air next to his head as he dodges this way and that.

Tiny puffs of snow leap into the air as bullets travel through it. Inches away from his body.

Sapir’s legs give out and his body falls forward, lifeless.

OVER BLACK.

EICHMANN (V.O.)(whisper)

You have nothing to fear... We want the best for you... You will live wonderful lives.

EXT. FOREST - HOURS LATER

Light pierces the darkness.

Sapir’s eyes open slowly, adjusting to the sunlight from above.

Standing over him, TWO FIGURES. He can’t make out their faces. He can make out their weapons.

He places his hand over his face, crying, prepared to meet his fate.

A HAND reaches out to him, grabs his tattooed arm.

OVER BLACK.

WISLICENYYes. He said he was personally responsible for the execution of this order.

BROOKHARTAdolf Eichmann admitted sole responsibility for the execution of The Final Solution of the Jewish People?

The rain continues to come down in droves.

EICHMANNEgypt.

13.

SS OFFICER #4No. Too risky.

EICHMANNWell then what do you suggest?

EICHMANNSo you will help me?

The officers all nod their heads in agreement.

EXT. ALLIED FORCES DETENTION CAMP - NIGHT

Eichmann, dressed in hunter’s clothing, crawls along the perimeter of the fence, avoiding the light and guard posts the best he can.

He comes to a small opening in the fence and begins to crawl through it.

He takes off into the night.

WIESLAre you here to kill me?

A beat, as the two are taken aback by the question.

FRIEDMANNo, no. We’re here because of Adolf Eichmann.

WIESLEichmann? I don’t have any information about him.

FRIEDMANBut you were his chauffeur during the war, yes?

WIESLYes, I was. But after the war, we parted ways. He changed his name and rank and since then, I haven’t heard anything about him.

FRIEDMANWhen was the last time you saw him?

WIESLI don’t remember. We were all so tired back then. We were hiding up in the mountains and one morning he was gone.

(a beat)You know he had a mistress though, right?

17.

He makes his way across the room.

Mosenbacher adjusts herself, yawning.

He freezes.

After a moment, she relaxes. She doesn’t move again.

The Priest moves his QUEEN into position.

EICHMANNOne perfect solution...

Eichmann moves his KNIGHT again, directly into the path of the QUEEN.

OVER BLACK.

SUPER: THE DRIVER IS RED. THE DRIVER IS BLACK.

INT. MOSSAD HEADQUARTERS - DAY

SUPER: TEL AVIV, 1957

A man walks down the hallway with an important stride.

A myriad of people run about, busy with tasking.

He is not very tall, balding, but the way he carries himself, you would never notice.

He is ISSER HAREL, Chief of the Mossad.

22.

INT. HAREL’S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Harel sits down at his desk and opens a giant drawer full of folders. He briefly flips through them until he finds the one he is looking for, a dossier labeled EICHMANN, ADOLF.

He opens it up.

The picture Tuviah Friedman stole is at the top of the stack of papers.

He ruffles through a couple of pages, uncertain.

He picks up the phone.

FRITZ BAUER answers.

HARELFritz Bauer?

Harel and Bauer sit at Bauer’s dining room table.

HARELYou have a lovely home. Thank you for having me.

BAUERYou’re welcome. I’m glad you like it. Would you like a cup of tea before we begin?

Harel pulls the EICHMANN DOSSIER from his case.

HARELNo, thank you though. If it’s all the same, I’d rather get started now. I don’t mean to be rude, it’s just this has been a very long goose chase for me.

BAUERDo you doubt my claims, Mr. Harel?

23.

HARELI doubt nothing.

BAUERFelix Shinar gave you the information, yes?

HARELHe did.

BAUERThen you should recognize what that entails. I am a serious man, Mr. Harel. A serious man in all aspects of my life. I don’t spread gossip. I don’t listen to rumors. I hate what happened to this country, and I hate how quickly the world has forgotten what they did.

HARELThen you won’t mind sharing how you came across this information.

BAUERNo, of course not. I just wanted to make sure you understood where I am coming from.

HARELThe Mossad has thousands of false leads on Eichmann’s whereabouts, yet here I am, in your home. I did not mean to imply that I did not believe you, just that I’m ready to hear your story.

BAUEROk, good.

INT. HERMANN FAMILY HOME - MORNING - FLASHBACK

BAUER (V.O.)The information came from a man in Buenos Aires.

LOTHAR HERMANN, an elderly man, reads a NEWSPAPER at a table in the kitchen.

His daughter SYLVIA also sits at the table, eating breakfast.

24.

LOTHARAre you going to see that boy tonight?

SYLVIAYes, I think so. I was wondering if you’d mind if he came to dinner though?

Lothar looks up from his paper at her.

LOTHARIt should be fine.

BAUER (V.O.)Lothar Hermann is his name.

INT. HERMANN FAMILY HOME - LATER - FLASHBACK

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!

Sylvia answers the door.

Standing there is NICK EICHMANN, early twenties.

BAUER (V.O.)Hermann emigrated from Germany to Argentina before the war broke out with his wife. So of course, he was surprised to learn his daughter was dating a young man named Eichmann.

INT. FRITZ BAUER’S HOME - SAME TIME

HARELYou’re saying Eichmann’s family is still carrying his name?

BAUERYes. During their dinner, the boy even bragged about his father’s role in the war. Told poor Lothar --

INT. HERMANN FAMILY HOME - EVENING - FLASHBACK

NICKThe world would be a better place if the Germans had finished the job.

25.

INT. HERMANN FAMILY HOME - LATER THAT NIGHT - FLASHBACK

Lothar sits at the dinner table by himself, contemplating the night’s revelations.

BAUER (V.O.)What Nick failed to realized is that Hermann is part Jewish.

INT. FRITZ BAUER’S HOME - SAME TIME

HARELThat’s not enough proof.

Bauer takes a sip of tea.

BAUEROf course it’s not. Even he didn’t think anything of it at the time.

INT. HERMANN FAMILY HOME - DAY - FLASHBACK

Lothar idly flips through a NEWSPAPER at the kitchen table.

He stops on an ARTICLE -- TRIAL IN FRANKFURT.

BAUER (V.O.)It wasn’t until he stumbled on a newspaper article about the trials in Frankfurt that he made the connection.

Searching through the article, he finds the words -- ADOLF EICHMANN -- STILL AT LARGE.

INT. HERMANN FAMILY HOME - LATER - FLASHBACK

Lothar sits with Sylvia at the table, the paper open to the article.

LOTHARHave you ever been to Nick’s house before?

SYLVIANo, never. I don’t even know where he lives.

26.

LOTHARHas he ever discussed his family with you?

SYLVIANo, not really. He told me his mother remarried after the war, but that was it.

INT. FRITZ BAUER’S HOME - SAME TIME

BAUERSo he wrote me a letter.

Bauer places an ENVELOPE on the table.

Harel takes it and opens it.

BAUER (CONT’D)One of many, that we have sent back and forth to each other for months. At the time, they did not have an address. I sent him some information we had on Eichmann and he agreed to try and find an address.

EXT. CHACABUCO STREET - DAY - FLASHBACK

A CITY BUS pulls away from a bus stop.

Lothar and Sylvia take a seat on a bench.

LOTHARI’ll be right here waiting. See if you can find out where he lives.

SYLVIAAnd if I do?

LOTHARTry and get into the house.

He pulls out the picture of Eichmann.

LOTHAR (CONT’D)Remember, this is what he looks like.

SYLVIAOk. Got it.

27.

She gets up and begins walks down the street.

BAUER (V.O.)Nick had never told Sylvia where he lived. Lothar told me the only way they kept in touch was through mutual friends.

She eyes somebody she recognizes, BRUNO.

She casually walks over to him.

SLYVIAHey, Bruno!

Bruno looks over at her, smiles.

BRUNOHey!

SYLVIAHey, have you seen Nick around? I need to talk to him about Friday.

BRUNOYeah, I think he has the day off today. He lives a block down that way.

(points towards the house)It’s a white house. I forget the address, but I know it starts with 42.

SYLVIAThanks! Am I gonna’ see you at Ernesto’s?

BRUNOI’ll see if I can swing by.

She continues her walk down the street until she sees a SMALL WHITE HOUSE in front of her, fenced in. A real shanty.

It’s the only white house on the street. The ADDRESS - 4261 CHACABUCO STREET.

She makes her way past the gate and up to the front door, and knocks on it.

After a moment, a manly face appears from behind the curtains of a window, and disappears just as fast.

28.

INT. CHACABUCO HOUSE - CONTINUOUS - FLASHBACK

From behind the curtains, Sylvia stands outside, a little nervous.

EXT. CHACABUCO STREET - CONTINUOUS - FLASHBACK

The front door opens. VERA EICHMANN, with a young boy on her hip, opens the door.

VERAYes?

SYLVIADoes Nick Eichmann live here?

VERAYes. Who are you?

SYLVIASylvia Hermann. I’m Nick’s girlfriend.

VERAOh, nice to meet you! Please come inside!

She steps in.

INT. CHACABUCO HOUSE - CONTINUOUS - FLASHBACK

Sylvia looks around the house.

It truly is a shanty.

In the corner of one of the rooms she spots young DIETER EICHMANN, sitting on an old couch.

Vera leads her into the kitchen.

VERANick left about an hour ago. Should be back soon, so until then, would you like some coffee?

SYLVIAYes please.

From behind, a man walks into the kitchen and stops in front of her.

29.

It is Adolf Eichmann.

Sylvia keeps her cool, despite the realization.

EICHMANNHello, young lady.

SYLVIAHello. Are you Mr. Eichmann?

He doesn’t answer.

SYLVIA (CONT’D)Are you Nick’s father?

EICHMANNNo, I am his uncle.

SYLVIAOh.

Eichmann sits down at the table.

EICHMANNVera, be a dear and make some lunch for us please.

He looks at Sylvia, unblinking.

EICHMANN (CONT’D)So how did you and my nephew meet?

SYLVIAThrough mutual friends.

EICHMANNDo you go to school around here?

SYLVIAI just graduated.

EICHMANNFrom a university?

SYLVIANo. High school. I’m starting classes in the fall.

EICHMANNIn what?

SYLVIALanguages I think. Maybe French or Russian.

30.

His mouth twitches a little.

SYLVIA (CONT’D)Do you speak any other languages?

With defiance, he says--

EICHMANNGerman.

She smiles nervously.

Just in time, Nick walks in through the front door.

He sees his girlfriend sitting across from his father.

The look on his face is all she needs to confirm who it is sitting in front of her.

NICKSylvia... How did, how did you find my house?

SYLVIAI ran into Bruno. I needed to talk to you about, Friday. Did I do something wrong?

NICKNo. It’s fine. Let’s grab a bite to eat.

EICHMANNI just told your mother to make us some lunch, boy. It’s fine if she stays.

NICKNo, no. Thank you though, father.

EICHMANNSo be it.

Eichmann gets up and walks them to the door.

EICHMANN (CONT’D)It was nice meeting you, Sylvia.

SYLVIAYou too, Mr. Klement.

31.

EXT. CHACABUCO STREET - MOMENTS LATER - FLASHBACK

Sylvia and Nick walk side by side, a feeling of tension between them.

SYVLIAI’m sorry if I surprised your family like that. I didn’t mean to.

NICKNo, it’s fine. Really. My family just likes their privacy is all. They are nervous about meeting new strangers.

SYVLIAWell, I’m not a stranger, am I?

NICKNo, I just needed to warm them up to the idea of bringing you over. If they had known you were coming beforehand, it would have been better.

SYLVIAOk. But Nick?

NICKYeah?

SYLVIAWhy did you call him father?

NICKOut of respect. He took of us in after my father disappeared.

SYLVIAOh. Ok. I think I’m good from here.

Nick stops and tries to give her a kiss. She does, gingerly and walks off towards the bus stop.

INT. FRITZ BAUER’S HOME - SAME TIME - FLASHBACK

BAUERThe girl swears that the man living there is Adolf Eichmann.

Harel contemplates.

32.

HARELI’ll be in touch.

EXT. JERUSALEM - DAY

SUPER: DECEMBER, 1959

A BLACK SEDAN, with black tinted windows, drives through the crowded market streets.

INT. BLACK SEDAN - CONTINUOUS

In the back seat, Harel sits across from a middle-aged man, patiently waiting for the man to finish flipping through a stack of papers.

The man is ZVI AHARONI (38), tall, shaved, and well groomed. His eyes reveal little; he is naturally good at hiding his emotions.

The contents of the papers he is scanning through, OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION on Adolf Eichmann in Argentina.

AHARONIThere isn’t any proof here.

HARELI know. Regardless, Haim Cohen has requested to see both of us.

Aharoni looks up.

AHARONIThe attorney general?

HARELYes.

AHARONIWhat for?

HARELLikely wants us to go and capture whoever the hell is living in that house.

AHARONIBut there isn’t any proof. It says here the old man who confirmed his identity is blind.

33.

HARELIt was his daughter who saw him, but yes, you get the point.

AHARONIHmm.

EXT. MINISTRY OF JUSTICE’S OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER

The black sedan pulls up to the curb of the Ministry of Justice’s office.

The two men step out from the back seat.

INT. MINISTRY OF JUSTICE’S OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER

The two men walk side by side down the hallway.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

HAIM COHEN, Israel’s Attorney General, sits in a chair, next to Fritz Bauer.

Across the table, Harel and Aharoni.

Cohen reads through the Eichmann files.

COHENWhat are the chances that this Ricardo Klement is in fact, Adolf Eichmann?

HARELFifty-fifty.

BAUERIt’s more than that, Harel.

HARELThe information you’ve received from a blind man and his daughter is not enough for us to launch an operation, nor is it factual evidence. That’s why Mr. Cohen has requested Zvi’s presence.

AHARONIMr. Bauer.

34.

BAUERI’ve heard nothing but good things about you, Mr. Aharoni. What are your thoughts?

Aharoni thinks for a moment.

AHARONIThe risks associated with capturing the wrong man are too great. We need a positive identification from an agent, preferably with photographs.

COHENThen that’s that. I want you to go to Buenos Aires and find out once and for all if this man is who he says he is.

AHARONIMe? I don’t have much experience in the field, sir. I’m sure you can find somebody more suited for the job.

COHENNonsense. You’re Shin Bet, are you not?

AHARONII am.

COHENThen that makes you qualified.

INT. DAVID BEN-GURION’S OFFICE - DAY

Harel is seated opposite DAVID BEN-GURION, Israel’s Prime Minister.

BEN-GURIONWhat is it you plan to do if it is Eichmann?

HARELWe have two options. One would be to kidnap Eichmann and find a way to smuggle him out of Buenos Aires. This would be very difficult, considering we don’t schedule commercial flights to Buenos Aires.

35.

BEN-GURIONAnd the second option?

HARELAssassination.

BEN-GURIONNo, no. That won’t do. I want Eichmann taken alive if possible and I want him brought here to stand trial.

HARELIs that legal?

BEN-GURIONTechnically, Germany has more of a right to try Eichmann than we do. I don’t care about that though. If it is possible to get him out of Argentina, it will be possible to try him in Israel.

INT. EZEIZA AIRPORT - DAY

SUPER: Buenos Aires

Aharoni makes his way to the CUSTOMS DESK, FALSE PASSPORT and a SEALED ENVELOPE in hand.

CUSTOMS OFFICIALPassport.

He hands the CUSTOMS OFFICIAL his passport.

The Customs Official looks at it, scrutinizes, looks down at the sealed envelope.

CUSTOMS OFFICIAL (CONT’D)What is your purpose for visiting Argentina, Mr. Rodan?

AHARONIThere have been reports of anti-Semitism in certain parts of the city. I was sent to investigate and file a preliminary report.

The Customs Official looks for any sign of dishonesty in Aharoni’s face, but it’s stone cold.

A STAMP marks the date of his arrival -- MARCH 1, 1960.

EXT. EZEIZA AIRPORT - MOMENTS LATER

A driver, YOSSEF, is waiting for him in front of an EMBASSY CAR. He opens the door for him.

EXT. HOTEL - LATER

The embassy car stops in front of the hotel.

AHARONII’ll be in touch.

The driver nods, and gets back into the car.

INT. AHARONI’S HOTEL ROOM - LATER THAT NIGHT

Aharoni looks over the Eichmann documents, spread out on the bed.

His face is hardened with concentration.

EXT. HOTEL - THE NEXT MORNING

Aharoni walks out of the hotel and towards Yossef, who is waiting idly for him by a different car, a white FIAT.

Yossef opens the back for him, but he refuses.

AHARONIPassenger seat. Less conspicuous.

Yossef nods, understanding.

EXT. CHACABUCO STREET - DAY

The street sign -- CHACABUCO ST.

Yossef drives down the street.

Aharoni looks at a map of the surrounding area.

He looks up, glancing at the white shanty as they drive past it.

He sees the address, 4261 CHACABUCO STREET. The curtains are drawn shut.

They continue to drive.

INT. FIAT - MOMENTS LATER

Aharoni fishes a POSTCARD and PEN out of his pocket and begins writing.

4263 CHACABUCO STREET

TO HENRY DAGOSTO.

38.

HAVE JUST RETURNED, WITH REGARDS, GEORGE.

He hands it to Yossef.

AHARONISee if you can find out anything about who lives in that white house back there.

YOSSEFOkay. You want me to see if I can look in the windows too?

AHARONIYes, but don’t draw any attention to yourself.

YOSSEFGot it.

Yossef steps out of the car and begins to walk back up Chacabuco street.

Seeing the white house, he crosses the street to where an OLD MAN is gardening.

YOSSEF (CONT’D)Excuse me, sir?

The old man looks up at him, stands and walks over, wiping his brow on a rag.

OLD MANYes?

YOSSEFI can’t seem to find the address on this post card. Any chance you know where it’s at?

The old man looks at the post card.

OLD MANIt’s wrong. There’s no 4263.

YOSSEFOh.

He turns around nonchalantly, looking at the house for a moment. His face hardens --

THE CURTAINS HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND PAINTERS ARE PAINTING THE WALLS.

39.

YOSSEF (CONT’D)Does anybody live there?

OLD MANNo. No they moved out some time ago.

YOSSEFAnd you don’t know anybody named Dagosto?

OLD MANNo, sorry.

Yossef walks back the car and gets in. He looks over at Aharoni.

YOSSEFNobody lives there anymore.

AHARONIDamn!

He hesitates for a moment, then drives off.

EXT. 14 GARIBALDI STREET - DAY

SUPER: TWO YEARS EARLIER.

A shovel digs through the mud as rain pours down, pooling in the dirt hole.

Eichmann, with Nick, and other son DIETER, looking miserable.

EICHMANNYou do shit work, you know that?

NICKIf we could wait until it stops raining...

EICHMANNAnd what? Start digging again in six months when the weather gets better? Don’t be an idiot.

NICKI was just offering...

EICHMANNShut up. I don’t want your advice, boy. All you do is complain.

40.

DIETERDad.

EICHMANNWhat?!

DIETERAll this work isn’t getting us anywhere. We should wait until the rain lets up.

EICHMANNIn the war, did we wait until the rain stopped?!

DIETERNo, dad...

EICHMANNYou’re damn right we didn’t! Rain, sleet, or snow we did our duty.

NICKIs that why you lost?

Eichmann slaps Nick, although the force is weak.

EICHMANNYou know nothing about me, or what I’ve done.

He continues to dig as his boys watch, their isolation from him resonating.

EXT. 14 GARIBALDI STREET - MONTHS LATER

Eichmann stands in front of his newly built house, the infamous BRICK SHANTY illustrated in many historical photographs, which is surrounded by an aluminum fence.

The sun beams off of his thick glasses.

INT. BIERGARTEN - EVENING

Eichmann sits among a group of old men, a large mug of beer resting in front of him, a cigarette in his hand. They are in the middle of a conversation.

There are small groups of patrons in the background, and the bar itself is heavy with smoke.

41.

OLD GERMAN MANLooking back, it’s such a silly thing that happened. We focused more on purification than we did trying to win the war. Hitler went mad.

Eichmann cannot hide his discontent with the way the conversation is going, as a sour look is painted across his aged face.

OLD GERMAN MAN #2It is what it is. I for one, feel lucky to have escaped.

OLD GERMAN MAN #3 Same here. We are the lucky ones.

EICHMANNHow can you say such things?!

The old men are caught off guard by this question.

EICHMANN (CONT’D)We are not lucky. It was men like you that cost us the war and you know this. You hide behind your false identities and trade war stories while defiling the past which brought you here. The Reich gave us opportunities, and we were judged not by who we were, but by what we could accomplish.

OLD GERMAN MANWe are not cowards, Adolf. We did not run until ordered to do so. Just the same, here you sit with us, drinking good beer, while our comrades are being executed one by one in Europe.

Eichmann’s face sours more.

EICHMANNI was, am, and always will be a good, proud German.

OLD GERMAN MAN #2If that’s the case, write a book about it and shut the hell up.

42.

INT. 14 GARIBALDI STREET - EVENING - FLASHBACK

He shouts at her.

EICHMANN (V.O.)So in the eyes of someone like me, somebody who bleeds Germany, we did nothing wrong.

43.

EXT. DIRT ROAD - DAY - FLASHBACK

Eichmann rides a horse, wearing a poncho and sombrero. He waves at an elderly couple on the opposite of the road.

EICHMANN (V.O.) If the statistics were correct, and there were indeed ten million Jews in Europe, I would only have been satisfied if we had killed all ten million Jews, because then I could say we had destroyed an enemy.

INT. 14 GARIBALDI STREET - DAY - FLASHBACK

Eichmann stands in front of a mirror, dressed in his old SS UNIFORM.

He admires himself, as if he were lost in a moment in time.

EICHMANN (V.O.)Only then could I have said I had fulfilled my duty for blood, for our people, and for the liberty of all people.

INT. 14 GARIBALDI STREET - DAY

Eichmann reflects what he has typed.

He exterminates the cigarette in an ashtray.

Yossef and Aharoni sit in the car.

Aharoni is wrapping a small cardboard box with wrapping paper.

AHARONIThe son. Nick.

YOSSEFHow’s that?

AHARONITry and find the son. Eichmann may have assumed a dozen false identities by now, but I’m pretty sure his family didn’t. At least not their first names.

He hands Yossef the present.

AHARONI (CONT’D)There is a lighter in here. See if you can find somebody who knows where he moved, or if he has a job.

Yossef nods, understanding, then steps out of the car.

INT. HAREL’S OFFICE - DAY

Harel is sitting at his desk, reading a letter.

He focuses on the words -- THE BIRD AND THE BEE ARE NO LONGER -- THE DRIVER IS RED -- WILL UPDATE -- MR. RODAN.

Harel smiles.

INT. RENTAL CAR - DAY

Aharoni watches as Yossef walks back up to the car.

AHARONIWhat did you find?

YOSSEFI talked to one of the painters. He didn’t know anybody by the name of Nick, but he said there was a boy named Dito who used to live here that he knew. He gave me an address to where he worked.

45.

Aharoni smiles.

AHARONIGood work.

EXT. AUTOBODY SHOP - LATER

A run down part of the city. A few mechanics dabble about on an assortment of cars.

An OLD MECHANIC smokes a cigarette out front.

INT. RENTAL CAR - CONTINUOUS

EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS

Yossef continues to walk towards the autobody shop, the present in his hand.

EXT. AUTOBODY SHOP - CONTINUOUS

The old mechanic catches eyes with him, exhales smoke.

OLD MECHANICCan I help you with something?

YOSSEFIs Dito here?

OLD MECHANICYeah, he’s somewhere. What do you need?

YOSSEFI’m trying to find his brother. I’ve got this present for him.

46.

OLD MECHANICWhat is it?

YOSSEFA birthday present.

The old mechanic looks at it suspiciously.

OLD MECHANICBe right back.

He walks into the garage, leaving Yossef out front.

Yossef tries to look inside without looking suspicious. He spots the old mechanic in a corner talking to a teenager.

It’s Dieter Eichmann.

The young man walks towards Yossef, an irritated look on his face.

DIETERDo I know you?

YOSSEFNo, I’m sorry. I’m looking for Nick Klement. I was told you lived on Chacabuco Street but there was nobody there.

DIETEROur family has moved.

YOSSEFOne of your neighbors referred me here.

DIETERWhat is that?

YOSSEFIt’s a lighter.

DIETERWhere did you get it from?

Yossef looks down at the present for an instant, getting his story together.

YOSSEFI’m delivering it for a friend of mine. I work at a hotel as a bellboy and he said he needed it delivered for some woman they know.

47.

DIETERWhat was her name?

YOSSEFI don’t know. My friend just gave me his name and address.

DIETERI can deliver it if you’d like.

He extends his hand, leaving Yossef with no option but to give it to him.

YOSSEFThanks.

DIETERNo. Thank you.

He extends his hand again.

Yossef shakes it. He turns around and walks back towards the car, not looking back as Dieter watches him in the background.

He gets in.

Dieter looks at the car with suspicion.

THERE IS NOBODY IN THE PASSENGER’S SEAT.

Yossef drives away.

INT./EXT. AUTOBODY SHOP - EVENING

Dieter walks out through the garage as the rest of the mechanics close up shop.

He walks over to a MOPED and climbs on, puts on a helmet and starts the engine.

INT. RENTAL CAR - CONTINUOUS

Hidden in a different spot, Aharoni and Yossef watch Dieter on the moped.

AHARONIKeep your distance.

YOSSEFGot it, boss.

48.

EXT. AUTOBODY SHOP - CONTINUOUS

Dieter drives off, oblivious to the darkened car in an alleyway he passes by.

A moment later, the car comes to life and follows.

EXT. HIGHWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Dieter drives along idly, weaving in and out of traffic.

Behind him, following at a distance, the rental car, blending in perfectly.

EXT. DIRT ROAD - LATER

Dieter rides through puddles and mud on the dirt road, bouncing up and down on the uneven terrain.

A storm brews on the horizon, lightning flashes.

INT. RENTAL CAR - CONTINUOUS

Aharoni doesn’t blink, staring at the small red light of the moped in the distance.

AHARONITurn off your lights.

YOSSEFBut I won’t be able...

AHARONITurn them off. Now.

He pulls up, turns off the engine and gets off, placing his helmet on the moped.

INT. RENTAL CAR - CONTINUOUS

AHARONIThere it is.

YOSSEFWhat do you want me to do?

AHARONIDrive me back to the embassy.

YOSSEFYou don’t want a closer look?

AHARONIIt’s too dark right now. Tomorrow.

INT. RENTAL CAR - DAY

Aharoni and Yossef sit in a new rental car, looking at the house in the distance.

A WOMAN walks out into the front yard and begins to hang laundry on a clothesline.

AHARONITime to move.

He pulls a BRIEFCASE from underneath the front seat, and opens it.

Inside, an elaborate contraption, A CAMERA SYSTEM.

50.

He presses a small button on the HANDLE.

CLICK, CLICK, CLICK...

The camera snaps a few photos.

AHARONI (CONT’D)Let’s go.

EXT. GARIBALDI STREET - DAY

The rental car drives slowly, turning down the dirt road, towards the house.

They pass it and stop in front of a shack up the road a ways.

Aharoni steps out with the briefcase, angling it in certain directions and taking pictures.

Yossef steps out behind him.

AHARONIStart taking measurements of that field over there.

Yossef looks to where Aharoni is pointing and begins walking.

An ELDERLY WOMAN comes out of the shack, curious as to what these men are doing.

ELDERLY WOMAN(in Spanish)

Can I help you, sir?

AHARONI(in rough Spanish)

Do you speak English?

ELDERLY WOMANNo, not much.

AHARONIYossef!

Yossef stops what he is doing and walks over to them.

AHARONI (CONT’D)(in English)

What is she saying?

51.

YOSSEF(in Spanish)

My boss wants to know what you said.

ELDERLY WOMANI asked if I could help him with something.

YOSSEF(in English)

She asked if you needed help.

AHARONITell her we work for a car company and we’re looking for a place to build a factory.

YOSSEF(in Spanish)

We work for a car company and we’re looking to build a factory here.

The elderly woman’s face lights up with excitement.

ELDERLY WOMANYes! Yes! Would you like to buy my land?! I can sell you my land for very cheap!

Yossef gets nervous.

The elderly woman begins laughing and speaking very fast.

AHARONIWhat’s wrong?

In the background, a woman walks out from Eichmann’s house and begins to walk towards them, infuriated.

YOSSEF(in English)

Nothing, boss. She just wants to sell her land to us.

AHARONIOh. Well tell her we’re just looking right now and if we like it, we’ll come back.

The woman comes up behind them.

52.

WOMAN(in Spanish)

Excuse me! What are you doing out here?!

Yossef and Aharoni turn around, startled.

The briefcase begins snapping pictures of the woman’s face.

AHARONIWhat is she saying?

WOMAN(in perfect English)

I asked, what are you doing out here?! Who are you?!

Aharoni doesn’t know what to do.

YOSSEFWe work for a car company --

WOMANWhat car company?!

AHARONIAn American one.

WOMANYou don’t sound American! What are you doing out here?!

AHARONIWe’re looking for land to build a factory. We were told this area is inexpensive.

WOMANWhy would you want to build a factory where there isn’t any power?

AHARONII... I guess we’ve gotten confused about the area.

Aharoni looks behind her and sees a woman standing on the porch of Eichmann’s house.

He turns and gets back into the rental car quickly, Yossef right behind him.

They start off and drive back towards the house.

53.

The woman on the porch stares at them as they pass.

EXT. CAFE - EVENING

Aharoni and Yossef sit at a coffee table outside.

YOSSEFWhat are we going to do, boss?

Aharoni takes a sip of coffee.

AHARONIIt’s too risky to go back to the house now. We’re running out of options.

He takes another sip of coffee, looks up, lost in thought.

Yossef notices.

YOSSEFWhat is it?

AHARONISomething that lady said earlier.

YOSSEFAbout what?

AHARONIShe said there was no power or water.

YOSSEFSo?

AHARONINo power or water. No utilities.

He jumps up from the table and runs to the car, Yossef right behind him.

YOSSEFBoss, we didn’t pay our bill!

Aharoni stops, and turns around, laughing.

AHARONISorry, sorry! I just had an idea.

54.

INT. GEOFINK BUILDING - DAY

Aharino and Yossef stroll through the front door of the building and make their way to a customer service counter.

A YOUNG CLERK awaits them.

YOUNG CLERKCan I help you?

AHARONIYes, I’m trying to find the owners of a certain piece of property your company leased.

YOUNG CLERKSure. What is the address?

AHARONIThe number 14 plot on Garibaldi Street, in San Fernando.

The young clerk leaves and returns a moment later with some paperwork.

She flips through the pages, stopping on one in particular.

YOUNG CLERKYes, number 14. It says here the plot belongs to a Veronika Fichmann.

Yossef’s eyes go wide.

AHARONIWould you mind if I get a copy of that?

YOUNG CLERKSure.

EXT. KIOSK - EVENING

Aharoni and Yossef sit in a black DE SOTO, parked under a tree.

Aharoni looks through some binoculars at the house.

YOSSEFSee anything yet, boss?

55.

AHARONINothing.

Just as he puts down his binoculars, A FIGURE walks out into the front yard, grabbing clothes off of the clothesline.

Aharoni looks through his binoculars again, excited.

THROUGH THE BINOCULARS we see Eichmann, clear as day, putting the laundry in an old weaved basket.

AHARONI (CONT’D)It’s him.

Eichmann continues to collect the clothes, dropping a shirt on the ground clumsily.

AHARONI (CONT’D)It’s him, Yossef.

He smiles.

AHARONI (CONT’D)Let’s go get some steak, my friend. We have a long day tomorrow.

56.
