‘Seventy Years of Flying’

My first flight was in 1935 in an Avro 504 with a sec-ond in a Leopard Moth from Speke (now John Len-non International Airport) to Hooton Park in 1937.I joined the RAF in 1943 and did my first flying withthem from the King’s private airfield in WindsorGreat Park on Tiger Moths. I was then posted over-seas to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for therest of my flying training – getting my ‘wings’ therebefore being posted up to Cairo and then on toJersusalem for a spell before going down near thecoast to RAF Lydda (now Ben Gurion InternationalAirport).By now the European war was finishing but wefound ourselves involved in the Arab/Israeli conflict.Our two main jobs there were firstly to fly militaryand civil VIPs around the Middle East includingPalestine, Egypt, Damascus, Beirut, Cyprus andTranJordan.Our second responsibility was to shadow Jewishrefugee ships trying to reach Haifa and patrollingroads and railways to look for terrorist activity – itwas a time when we were ‘pig in the middle’ andboth sides wanted us out. We were equipped withAvro Anson 12, 19 and 21’s, Percival Proctors,Fairchild Argus 2 and 3’s and Auster 3 and 5’s.After completing my three years overseas posting Icame home to be posted to RAF Finningley givingATC cadets flying experience in Ansons.By now the wars were over and after a spell asLeading Observer in the Royal Observer Corps I re-turned to flying at 19 RFS, Woodvale flying DHChipmunks. I followed this becoming a radar Fightercontroller with 3611 FCU here and in Germany,where we were tasked with keeping SupermarineSpitfires and Gloster Meteors from getting too nearthe Russian border!Just for interest, I have flown in seventeen types ofaeroplane as pilot and in fifty two types assupernumary crew or passenger.So there we are – flying gets in your bones once youare bitten.

The date, according to my log book, was June 15th,1946.Every night came news reports of attacks by the IZLor the Stern gang on various installations of theArmy and Air Force throughout Palestine. On thatday Field Marshall Sir Bernard Montgomery wasarriving in Palestine at Lydda and was to be flown upby AHQ Levant Communications Flight to the smallair strip at Kolundia some seven miles north ofJerusalem. Our VIP Pilot F/O Dixon would bepicking up the Field Marshall in Anson XII PH605 at1300 hours to arrive at Kolundia at 1320. I was de-tailed to fly our Auster V 627 up to Kolundia, there tocollect two officers of the Royal Air Force Regimentand fly along the road between Kolundia andJerusalem to ensure that no terrorists were hiding oneither side of the road or in the surrounding hills toattack the Field Marshalls car. Although at this timethe Army had its own Austers, they had not yet beenposted out to Palestine and it was therefore our jobto provide such light aircraft and pilots as necessaryfor such work. The Auster should have been idealfor spotting work in this very hilly country to the eastof the Plain of Sharon, but we had alreadyexperienced some difficulty with them due apparent-ly to the fact that high grade octane petrol did notsuit the tiny four cylinder Lycoming engines.

The type of trouble we were having was illustratedvery vividly to me on this flight of June 15th. I took offfrom Lydda and bounced my way in to the hot aircurrents up to Kolundia. Here I collected my twoR.A.F. Regiment Officers and we were soon air-borne again to follow the road through to Jerusalemat a height of some 50 feet. Within a few minutes mytwo Regiment Officers had opened their voluminousmaps and in the confined space of our cabin therewas very little room for me to see out at all!However, my two friends seemed to know exactlywhat they were doing and I put myself entirely attheir disposal to fly them where they wanted andgive them the fullest co-operation in ensuring thatthe mission was successfully carried out.We flew the length of the road to within a mile or soof the boundaries of Jerusalem, but there we had toturn back as no aircraft were allowed to fly over theHoly City. Having ensured that the roads and thefields on either side were clear to the best of ourknowledge, we headed eastwards into the hills inorder to take in the wider aspect of the operation.After some ten minutes flying, all the time atsomething between 25 and 50 feet above theground, I found myself in a long valley with hillstowering above me. Only three weeks before, on September 27th,the 445th had suffered the highest group loss in8th Air Force history. Out of 37 B-24sdispatched on a mission to industrial targets atKassel, no less than 30 were lost and only fourmade it all the way back to Tibenham. Througha navigational error, the 445th becameseparated from the bomber stream and friendlyfighter cover and were singled out by waves ofFw.190s and Bf.109s. A total of 236 men werereported missing and 112 of them were laterconfirmed as killed in action. The effect onmorale must have been devastating but thefollowing day the 445th contributed 10 aircraft toanother raid on Kassel, this time without loss.With this background perhaps a lesser disasterwas not investigated as thoroughly as it shouldhave been?

There had also been, just eight weeks earli-er. Another Liberator crash 30 miles away atFreckleton, when 57 people had been killed, 35of the British casualties, were children. Had thisbeen in the minds of the investigators and, thus,the reason why, with all-American casualties,the incident was apparently, so perfunctorilyinvestigated? Were they just relieved not to belooking at another ‘Freckleton’?

Present dayDoug Darroch never forgot the accident and wasdetermined he would put up a memorial to the dead.Doug and his family organised a tribute. It is locatedon a small triangle of land donated by David Williams,a local monumental mason on the North CheshireTrading Estate, at Junction 3 off the M53 Motorwaynot far from the crash site. On this Estate, at the sideof Brook Way is a two-ton granite stone, given free ofcharge by a North Wales quarry, with David Williamscarving the inscriptions. In October 1996, HowardMortimer organised the unveiling of the memorial byMayor Myrra Lea and its dedication by Rev. CanonAlan Poulter Rural Dean of Birkenhead. It was wit-nessed by a small gathering, which included Lieuten-ant Colonel Patrick D. Mullan Assistant Air Attaché atthe American Embassy and eyewitnesses of thecrash. The inscription on the plaque reads: ‘In mem-ory of the 24 American Servicemen of the U.S. ArmyAir Force who died when their aircraft exploded inmid-air over these fields on 18 October1944’

During 2001 Doug arranged for an additionalplaque containing all their names from a listsupplied by the American Embassy. This listhowever contained the names of all theAmerican airman killed on the Wirral in October1944, and included that of 2nd Lt Jay F.Simpson, killed in a P-47 Thunderbolt thatcrashed on a test flight from Burtonwood on 9th

October 1944 a few miles away at SaughallMassie. Simpson’s name was added in error,but it seemed appropriate to leave it in situ.Surprisingly the M53 Motorway misses all thefields into which the wreckage fell, To day thereis still a large depression, where the majorportion of the fuselage fell and smallwaterlogged pit, presumably where the wingsection was dug out and which seems to havebeen diligently avoided by the farmer eversince. The cornfield has a large area of distinctcolouring where the engines fell and burned.

Final thought

Captain Driscoll’s crew were comparativelysenior and probably operational veterans;however, the passenger crews consisted mainlyof junior ranks recently arrived replacementcrews, detailed for this duty to gain experienceof flying in UK conditions. The debacle sufferedby 445th Bomb Group would imply thatsquadrons of that group would have receivedmany replacement crews in early October. Thisborn out by the history of one of the passengers2nd Lt Blake’s aged 21, the son of Mr and MrsHenry G Blake, from Prattville, Alabama. Hewas among the graduating class at theBlytheville Army Air Field, Arkansas in April1944 he was commissioned as a secondlieutenant and awarded the silver wings of amilitary pilot.

He had travelled to the UK on the 15th

September 1944 to be killed on this fatefulflight.The true facts will never be known, but it isworth bearing in mind that the plane was flyingsoutheast over Oxton when the first ‘explosion’occurred, possibly a lightning strike, causingminor damage and throwing out small bits ofwreckage. The pilot realising that he was introuble and, being over a built-up area, couldhave turned sharply right (south west) towardsStoreton and Landican and their open fields.Then, almost immediately the second massiveexplosion, probably a gas explosion, blew theplane apart with the result as graphicallydescribed. Had it crashed on a densely built-uparea, with its large fuel load, the result couldhave been carnage. Thus, it could be thatCaptain William Driscoll may have saved manyinnocent residents of Bebington or Port Sunlightfrom a dreadful fate, just as schools were lettingout.
