FOUNDATIONTHE EDMONTON YMCA

Over the past three years, YMCA of Northern Alberta has focused its work to address three urgent needs facing our communities: health and well-being, child and youth development, and opportunity for all.

Today’s YMCA of Northern Alberta serves over 100,000 individuals through our program and service delivery in the areas of child care, health, fitness and aquatics, and community and housing initiatives. Serving the regions of Edmonton, Wood Buffalo and Grande Prairie, together with our employees, members, participants, donors and committed volunteers we are creating communities where reaching one’s potential is every person’s right.

Donors to The Edmonton YMCA Foundation help ensure the continued success of YMCA of Northern Alberta in a special way. By endowing their

gifts through the Foundation, these donors ensure stable funding that will impact lives for generations to come... a legacy that lives on forever.

While the past year has been challenging from an investment perspective, the Board of The Edmonton YMCA Foundation continues to prudently steward the funds entrusted to our care. And we continue to work with donors to realize their vision for strong kids, healthy families and vibrant communities for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all our donors, Foundation Board members and Heritage Club Members. Thanks to your generous support, the YMCA legacy of building healthy communities will endure for generations.

The Power of EndowmentEndowment giving has the ability to inspire and transform, to make an impact for generations to come. The true power of endowment is in its longevity – maintaining the capital while using a portion of the investment income to fund programs. Any remaining income is reinvested in the fund in order to protect against inflation.

In just eight years a fund that started with a gift of $27,870 has now disbursed over $12,000 to support YMCA of Northern Alberta programs and has a current balance of over $38,000. This fund will continue to grow and to support the community for the next eight years, and the next eight after that, and again after that...

Wanda’s Story“I joined the YMCA of Northern Alberta because of their work helping children and youth become community contributors and resilient citizens. The Y responds to community needs and makes tremendous contributions,” says Wanda Wetterberg, member of the YMCA Heritage Club. “The Y’s goal to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay means they need financial support from people like me.”

Wanda has left a portion of her estate to the YMCA through her will. She likes the fact her money will continue to support the programs she believes in after she is no longer able to make annual gifts.

“I’m not a wealthy woman, but it’s not the amount that counts,” she says, “it’s your belief in giving back to a worthy cause.”

The 64-year-old former public servant, who is now semi-retired and works as a consultant in the not-for-profit sector, became interested in the Y while working with the City’s parks and recreation department. She learned more about its programs when she joined the Y’s Board of Directors.

Wanda says she has been very fortunate in her life and has had lots of opportunities. Her family is doing well and doesn’t really need her help so she has chosen to share her estate with a select number of charities.

“I think it’s becoming more common with boomers,” Wanda says. “As you reach my age you sit back and think a little more about what kind of legacy you want to leave. It’s not that I’m giving a lot of dollars, it’s more that it’s the right thing to do.”

Wanda says she’d like her bequest to support Strong Kids programs, but says she’ll leave the final decision to the Y. “The YMCA is a solid organization with which I share values,” she says. “I trust them to make the right decisions now and in the future.”

Wanda’s bequest will be endowed through The Edmonton YMCA Foundation and provide support for children and families in Edmonton and Northern Alberta for generations to come.
