Principal’s Message I hope that everyone enjoyed the school holiday period and that you had an opportunity to relax and enjoy your time together as a family. We have an action packed Term ahead of us. Please continue to check the website calendar, read the newsletter and stay updated by downloading the Skoolbag App. (see page 4) so that you don’t miss out on any important events.

Vale It was with great sadness that we learned last week of the passing of Mr Kamlesh Chaudhary, husband of Mrs Archana Chaudhary, our Hindi teacher. Kamlesh and Archana were holidaying in Fiji when he had a cardiac arrest while swimming. Mrs Chaudhary and her husband have been part of our school community for the better part of twenty years. Mr Chaudhary was active in the wider community, assisting in Saturday school, teaching yoga and participating in numerous other activities that have benefited so many children and adults alike. Our thoughts are with Mrs Chaudhary and her sons at this sad time.

Welcome A warm welcome to all our new students who started school last week. We hope that you have had a good start at your new school. Education Week Education Week is from August 1 – August 5. During this week the school will hold Open Classrooms and Mini Olympics on Wednesday 3rd August. Please save this date in your calendar and schedule your work commitments if possible so that you can visit your child in their classroom. They would love to show you some of their work and also share their learning experiences with you. A separate note has been sent home outlining the day’s organisation and a sausage sizzle.

Congratulations Over the holidays Hwan and Won who competed in the Australian National Junior table tennis championships in Alice Springs. Won played very well but unfortunately did not win his category. Hwan won a silver medal at the Interstate Group competition and a bronze medal at Under 13 individual (Hwan is 11 years old). See photo in latter part of newsletter. We congratulate both the boys for their outstanding effort and dedication to their sport.

Lost Property Last term we had a huge second hand uniform sale made up from clothing in the lost property that had no name and was not claimed. One week into Term 3, and we already have 5 jackets, a water bottle with a name and two hats in the lost property. If your child has lost an item of clothing please ask them to check the lost property rather than you do it for them. Could you also check the name on your child’s clothing at home to make sure that it belongs to them and not another child at the school?

Friendly Reminders 2017 Kindergarten Enrolments The school office is now open to take Kindergarten enrolments for 2017.

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING PAYMENTS TO OFFICE** NO EFTPOS facilities available at office due to new finance system.

Parents can only use the POP system (see informaton below), cash or cheque to make payments to the school. If you do not have access to the internet you may use the school’s iPad located at the office to make payments. New Payment Method now available (POP – Parent on-line payment) It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by selecting $ Make a payment

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance). There is also a category called Other. This is to cover items not covered in the previous headings. Other can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice.

When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

• the student’s name, and • class and reference number OR • the student’s name, and • date of birth.

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system.

This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.

You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed.

Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

For any enquiries regarding the Online Payment process please contact the School Administration Office.

Coding For all those students who missed out on Coding Club this year, there is still a way for you to learn code. http://www.code.org is a great website for those who are new to coding but want to give it a try. It's free to sign up, and a little addictive once you get going!

Parking and Safety To ensure the safety of all students do not park on the school crossing. Please use the crossing with your child when crossing the road in Bennett and Endeavour Streets. PLEASE DO NOT DO ‘U’ TURNS OVER OR ON THE CROSSING. As our school numbers have grown it will become increasingly difficult to park in and around the school. Please do not park across residents’ driveways as this makes it difficult for these homeowners to enter or exit their driveway in the morning and afternoon. Please do not park in the designated parking areas of the surrounding units. Please help us to have a good reationship with our neighbours by respecting them and the parking rules around the school.

Speech Therapist We again have the services of the Gladesville Speech Pathologist on site every week. If you think that your child needs speech therapy please come to the office and ask for a referral form . The Speech Pathologist will contact you directly to arrange a time that suits you. Please note that there is a cost involved and that this is not a free service.

School Visits and Safety Induction When you come onto school grounds you will need to come to the front office and sign in to receive a visitor’s badge. You will now also be required to a have a safety induction. The gates on Mons and Bennett Streets will be locked during the school day - please enter via Endeavour Street.

P & C News Welcome back everyone from the mid-year break. Unfortunately for some of us term 3 started with the news of Mrs Chaudhary’s sudden loss. On behalf of all of the parents at West Ryde Public School the P&C have offered our sincerest condolences, and we hope that she takes all the time that she needs to spend with her family and recover from this difficult time. Election Day Stalls A huge thank you to all of the amazing parents who volunteered their efforts and time to organise and run the successful election day stalls at the end of last term. There were many familiar faces on the roster, but also some new or less regular supporters. Thanks to … Sally Cole, Russell Hall, Bec and Dave Fernandez, Jo Chang, Amy Bested, Fiona Lamborn, Shakeela Ahmed, Mona Sinha, Qian Tan, Milena Brentam, Kymana Saxton, Anura Balasooriya, Ranu Sinha, Akshay Munot, Fiona Tchan, Julie Irving, Wentao Zheng, Esther Wong, Luke Lam, Neesha Sagrani, Elie Yee, Kirsty Hyde, Jennie Hyde, Rochelle Tian, Sumudu Dias Jayasekara and Mel Emeleus. Kiss and Ride People are slowly starting to discover the Kiss and Ride and more and more people are using it each day. Remember

- There is no need to register for morning drop off. Just drive up and use it! - Registration forms for afternoon pick up will be available for collection at the Kiss and Ride on Tuesday or

Thursday mornings, or can be collected by you or your child from the red table by the school office. They can be returned to your child’s teacher if you’re unable to return them to the office.

Thanks to all of those parents who’ve put their names down to be a Kiss and Ride monitor. If you’re available to help on the occasional Tuesday or Thursday morning, or willing to go onto an on-call emergency roster for other mornings or afternoons, please get in touch - [email protected] Pedestrian Light Crossing at Victoria Rd & Endeavour St The NSW government are currently undertaking a review of speed camera in the state, and have asked for public input. Due to the number of regular near misses, the P&C has written to Transport NSW to formally request a red light camera or some other appropriate device at the pedestrian traffic lights at Victoria Rd and Endeavour St. This crossing is used by many families each day and cars are often reported running the red light, nearly hitting children or their parents. If you support this request, you can lend your voice by going to www.saferroadsnsw.com.au/haveyoursayspeedcameras.aspx and adding your vote. New P&C Executive Needed in 2017 Remember that the current P&C executive will be retiring at the November AGM. We need new and interested parents or carers to think about how they would like to get involved. Would you like to see the P&C operate differently? Is there anything you’d like to contribute? Working with the P&C is a great way to contribute to the school, to have a say in how it’s run, and to develop some great relationships with other parents and teachers. If you want to know more about the P&C or the roles to be filled, please get in touch. P&C Volunteers Email List The P&C maintains a volunteers email list which we use to ask for help with small, one off jobs or when searching for people with specific skills. If you’re interested in being included, please let us know.

The NEXT WRPS P&C MEETING DATE Wednesday 17th Aug, 7:00 pm

In the school library. Free child minding available. We hope we’ll see you there.
