SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION
In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear from Matthew 2:1-12 of the magi who have arrived from the East. The magi have been following the star seeking the newborn king of the Jews to pay him homage. King Herod had ques-tioned the chief priest, scribes and magi and asks where the child was to be born. They say to him what a prophet has written: “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel."
The magi are sent on their way to Bethlehem to find the newborn child and to bring word back to Herod so
that he too could go and pay him homage. The magi continue to follow the star and come to the place where they find the newborn child, Jesus. They are overjoyed at the sight of the child with his mother, Mary, present him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and did him homage. Finally, after being warned in a dream they do not return to Herod to tell him where Jesus is, but leave in a different direction.
Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, and the readings also remind us of the joy,
happiness, excitement and peace we should be celebrating for the birth of Jesus. “Rise up in splendor, Jerusa-lem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.” says the First Reading from Isaiah 60:1-6. Christ is born and brought light that overcomes the darkness we are in! What an appropriate reminder at the beginning of a new year and now leaving behind a year that was filled with much darkness. As believers in Christ, we are called to experience the splendor, the joy, the elation and overwhelming love that Christ’s birth brings us. With a new year ahead of us, I believe we should try to live each day with the hope that is today’s message. However, saying this is easy, but “believing in” or “having” hope comes with a great deal of trust and faith.
For whatever journey we are embarking on this year may we place our trust in the light of our God, who will
lead us and guide us along the way. The magi’s journey in following the star in search of Jesus is this example of trust, obedience, perseverance, and hope that we can all use along our own personal journeys this year. Whether it be on our journey of faith, in the search for a job, in a relationship, in trying to find our joy or passion etc.—we must do it with faith. When we trust God to guide us, we are led towards his son, Jesus who above all things brings us his peace, love and joy that we seek in our lives.
Like the magi, may we give honor and glory to Jesus Christ, not just in church, but even in the moments of
journey we receive or discover what we are looking for. May we strive this year to offer the gifts we have to one another this year: by giving the gift of your presence or time to family and friends, the gift of your talent and skill to those who are most in need of it, and finally the gift of your love, compassion, and kindness to those who may experience darkness. May you have a blessed and fruitful new year!
Peace, Marc A. Vega
