St. Peter by-the-Lake Episcopal Church
Welcomes you
Cordial Welcome:
We welcome all who worship today at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter by-the-Lake.
Visitors are asked to sign the guest register in the Narthex. Everyone is invited to the
Parish Hall for food and fellowship immediately following the service.
Communion:
Visitors accustomed to receiving Holy Communion in their own church are welcome to
do so at St. Peter’s. Also, if one is unable to come to the altar rail, contact an Usher prior
to the service and communion will be brought to you.
Worship:
Worship in our Episcopal Church community should be characterized by a combination
of both tolerance and respect for others. If during worship you need to exit the nave
(sanctuary) or return, please consider the appropriate times to return during the liturgy:
times of congregational singing (hymns) or speaking (the creed); or at the peace. Please
try to refrain from leaving or entering during times of prayer/confession and during the
sermon. Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you.
Children:
Worship in our Episcopal Church Community should be characterized by a combination
of both tolerance and respect for others. Children are always welcome in worship, but if
your child should become 'inconsolable', please consider quietly moving into the Narthex
or Fotinos Hall until your little one 'settles down'. Remember that we have a fully staffed
nursery (infants – 2 yrs.) downstairs for your convenience.
Want to know more?
Please speak to a greeter or a member of the clergy to get more information. You can
also visit us online at our parish website, www.saintpeterbythelake.net, and find us on
Facebook and Twitter.

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and
proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole
world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE FIRST READING: Isaiah 9:1-4 Reader: There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he
brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land
beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness -- on them light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 27:1, 5-9 spoken @ 8:30am 1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom then shall I fear? *
the Lord is the strength of my life;
of whom then shall I be afraid?
5 One thing have I asked of the Lord;
one thing I seek; *
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life;
6 To behold the fair beauty of the Lord *
and to seek him in his temple.
7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; *
he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling
and set me high upon a rock.
8 Even now he lifts up my head *
above my enemies round about me.
9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation
with sounds of great gladness; *
I will sing and make music to the Lord.
5
Psalm 27:1, 5-9 sung @ 10:30am
REFRAIN: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
REFRAIN: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom then shall I fear? *
the Lord is the strength of my life;
of whom then shall I be afraid?
REFRAIN: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
5 One thing have I asked of the Lord;
one thing I seek; *
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life;
6 To behold the fair beauty of the Lord *
and to seek him in his temple.
REFRAIN: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
REFRAIN: The Lord is my light and my salvation.
THE SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18
Reader: Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions
among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same
purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are
quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of
you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to
Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul
crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank
6
God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one
can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the
household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized
anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the
gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might
not be emptied of its power.
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are
perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.
SEQUENCE HYMN I come with Joy to meet my Lord Hymnal 304 (1-3)
Please stand. (Children ages 3 years – 3rd grade dismissed to Children’s Chapel.)
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
THE HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 4:12-23 Gospeller: When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He
left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory
of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet
Isaiah might be fulfilled:
“Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali,
on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”
From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
has come near.”
As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is
called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they
were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish
for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went
from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother
John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called
them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and
proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and
every sickness among the people.
Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor ~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~
THE NICENE CREED 358 We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant: Hear us, Lord;
People: For your mercy is great.
Celebrant: We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life. Silence The People may add their own thanksgivings
Celebrant: We will exalt you, O God our King;

Celebrant: Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them;
People: Who put their trust in you.
The Celebrant concludes with an absolution or a suitable Collect.
9
CONFESSION OF SIN 393
Celebrant: We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.
Silence may be kept.
Minister and People:
Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
in your compassion forgive us our sins,
known and unknown,
things done and left undone;
and so uphold us by your Spirit
that we may live and serve you in newness of life,
to the honor and glory of your Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
ABSOLUTION 360
Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our
Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of
the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen
THE PEACE All stand
Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People: And also with you.
THE HOLY COMMUNION
THE OFFERTORY
HYMN Doxology Old 100th
Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below,
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer C) 369
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
10
Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds
Celebrant: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of
glory and praise.
People: Glory to you for ever and ever.
Celebrant: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of
interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses,
and this fragile earth, our island home.
People: By your will they were created and have their being.
Celebrant: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race,
and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us
the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed
your trust; and we turned against one another.
People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.
Celebrant: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets
and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the
fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to
fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.
People: By his blood, he reconciled us.
By his wounds, we are healed.
Celebrant: And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly
chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all
those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to
proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:
SANCTUS S-129
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The people stand or kneel.
Celebrant: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and
made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before
you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the
Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it,
or lay a hand upon it, and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or
place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be
consecrated.
11
On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the
blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and
said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do
this for the remembrance of me."
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and
said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this
sacrifice of thanksgiving,
Celebrant
And People: We celebrate his death and resurrection,
as we await the day of his coming.
Celebrant: Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob, Sarah, Rachel, and Rebekah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us.
Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace
only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for
renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one
body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the
world in his name.
People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.
Celebrant: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus
Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the
Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,
from generation to generation.
People: AMEN. (Danish 3-fold)
Celebrant: And now, as our Savior As our Savior Christ
Christ has taught us, has taught us,
we are bold to say, we now pray,
THE LORD’S PRAYER 364 Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
12
Lift up our eyes and see His face,
And His grace forever.
May the Lord, Mighty Lord
Bless and keep us forever
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant: [Alleluia.] Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People: Therefore let us keep the feast. [Alleluia.]

A Word From the Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor
Light In The Darkness Light coming to those in darkness is a recurring theme during the Epiphany season. In the Old Testament passage, the Prophet Isaiah uses the imagery of light to describe the hope and joy of Israel after their liberation from oppression. In their suffering and despair, the people “see only distress and darkness.” But this darkness is not the final word – they will be redeemed, as darkness is turned into light in the coming new age of peace and justice. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light: those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined.” (Synthesis, January 22nd, 2017) Faithfully, Father Ron

for your spiritual and potential financial commitment to a building expansion. Please
remember, we’re not asking you to give at this time; that will come in a Capital
Campaign if the feasibility study indicates your support. Your responses will be
gathered by The Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) to ensure your privacy and
confidentiality.
So, we’ll be asking you some questions. You can also ask us questions if you wish. Our
leadership has been available personally and by phone. We’ve added an email,
[email protected], so if you prefer to send us an electronic question or comment, you
can. Our Widen the Walls leadership will respond to your questions.
Yes, it’s starting off as an exciting new year. We look forward to a fruitful, thoughtful
dialogue as we continue to explore expanding to serve our congregation and commuity.

2016 continued to be a wonderful year of outreach for Saint Peter by-the-Lake and
our involvement with The Corner Table Soup Kitchen Ministry in Newton, NC. Throughout the
year, many parishioners from St. Peter have volunteered to host meals, head up cook teams to
prepare meals and serve the many people coming into The Corner Table. This year, in fact, we
have gone from hosting four meals to now, six.
History:
The Corner Table, Inc. is a soup kitchen ministry which is a non-profit organization which opened
its doors in January of 2002. Led by Rev. Beth Lilly and Rev. Brant Hoots, and other clergy in the
Newton and Conover areas, as well as by several other interested citizens of Eastern Catawba
County, The Corner Table was founded with the spirit of an open door and open hearts with the
desire to feed any hungry men, women and children who are in need in the surrounding areas. It
is assumed that not only does a person have hunger of body, they have hunger of soul: both are
nourished at The Corner Table. Those who serve as volunteers find nourishment in their service
to their brothers and sisters in need. An atmosphere of hope and joy is what fills the air each day,
along with the aroma of whatever delicious meal one of the volunteer cook teams has prepared.
On any given day during the week, The Corner Table is a very busy place. Executive Director
Summer Lee Jenkins and Food / Volunteer Manager Tina Campbell have the guests’ best interests
in mind as they operate this busy soup kitchen. Donations of food and funds arrive each day. New
faces appear among the guests every week.
As we begin 2017, Jim Racz has agreed to represent SPBTL on the Board of Directors of The Corner
Table. Jim, along with his wife, Pat, have long been very active at The Corner Table.
Our next SPBTL host meal will be January 23, 2017. Our Corner Table bulletin board and sign up
list is in the hallway between Fotinos and Furr hall. Sign up today to help in 2017!
To continue this important ministry to feed the hungry in our community, we need your support.
Whether it’s a financial donation, or your gift to volunteer time, it’s vital to the success of The
Corner Table.
